Scenes From The Road

Description
The song started with the chord progression - a fairly standard blues/jazz format. The words are my attempt at a "What's going on?" type song - my favourite example being "Hard Rain's Gonna Fall" by Dylan (not that this one is much like that one). It's the sort of song that once you get started you could write a million verses! I hope you enjoy it.

Lyrics
SCENES FROM THE ROAD

VERSE 1
Thought it was time I got out and about
To see what went on in the world
Looked in the cities, looked in the towns
Everything went in a whirl

CHORUS
I’m tired from the journey and I have to get back
I cannot continue to roam
All of this travelling is wearing me down
And I really can’t wait to get home

VERSES 2 & 3

I saw a lawyer, he was telling some lies
To a man selling cars from his yard
And they both agreed that where money’s concerned
A man has to stay on his guard

I saw a teacher telling all that he knows
To a child with her eyes open wide
But poverty struck her and dulled what she knew
And what she would be if she tried

CHORUS

VERSES 4 & 5
I heard a dog barking and a cat on the prowl
A man staggered into the night
A girl and a boy hurried home past his door
Him telling her it’s alright

Someone from the government was making a speech
About business and money and oil
Stumbled across an old man and his wife
Who got by with nothing at all

CHORUS

VERSES 6 & 7

I saw a fire that ripped though the trees
Taking people and houses away
It roared and it jumped as it burnt in the sky
Turned the darkest of nights into day

Saw a huge wave that washed over the land
It broke a tall building apart
I didn’t matter that when it was built
They said it was state-of-the-art

CHORUS

Great chorus. I really like the "teacher" verse. The line "But poverty struck her and dulled what she knew" stuck out as particularly well said. Alway an effortless and clear vocal! Nice mix!

Thanks
I appreciate the comments, Andrew. I certainly enjoy singing the song. Re the teaching comment, it's unfortunately true that, at least in my country, the income of parents is still the best predictor of a child's educational success.

Nice work!
Good morning Philip. Nice work! Your easy going vocals make this song just glide on by. Like the lyrics as well. The chorus is catchy - I wanted to sing along. Perhaps a tasty lead break over a verse could have snuck in there as well? Another quality offering. Talk soon, Peter.

Thanks
Thanks, Peter. I agree about the lead break. I think I should have left a gap for one somewhere. Something with a bit of grunt that expressed a different mood from the laid back vocal!

You have a dylanesque style going on, but I love the country tones behind this yeeehaaa!!

What a great song. It is sometimes hard to write a song that trips along nicely, sounds easy and just flows. I think the bass line works through that really well. I thought it was well played, well sung and just nice. I've downloaded it to go in my car because it will be a great driving song. Thankyou so much.

Thanks
I appreciate the comments, Grahame. I was trying for a Freddy Green-style flow to the rhythm (have a listen to him here if you're not familiar with him http://www.freddiegreen.org/audio/audio.html )behind the song. Hope you enjoy travelling with the song - I'm chuffed at the thought of that!

Very....
Nicely done..... Strong lyrics, a Jessy Winchester kinda sound, close to
a Dr. John, Vocals in the same range very nicely done as well....
You've said a lot of things here, that only a traveler could see, for me
that's what song writing is about, telling the story as it is, not as what
they might want to hear......Keep it real.....

A tale well told
Most enjoyable story and music. You really dropped in some good messages and the mix is clean and supports the guitar and vocals.

thanks for the download :)
