Description
Written by Andrew Lack (alackbass) about the death of his mother. A version has already been posted by Andrew. I thought it was a great song, done brilliantly by those involved. I wanted to record the song, but a little differently from the original. I kept it to acoustic guitars (with a bit of electric bass) a lead vocal and some harmony here and there. I tried to bring out the deep emotion that the death of a family member engenders.

My thanks to Andrew for giving permission for me to cover the song - I much appreciate his generosity. I have posted the words, but they are all Andrew's.

Lyrics
A Light Went Out
Written by Andrew Lack

Somehow a light went out,
I’m sitting in the dark,
I don’t know how I’ll find my way,
I know if you were here,
You’d take me by the hand,
And let me know that it’s okay,

But you’ve got things you have to do,
And you’ve got somewhere else to be,
I know that if you could,
You’d find a way to see me through,
But that’s not how it’s meant to be

It seems the light I saw,
Extinguished much too soon,
I just can’t seem to understand,
How can a light so bright,
Be here one day then out of sight,
I know it’s not what you had planned,

You just had things you had to do,
And you had somewhere else to be,
I know that if you could,
You’d find a way to see me through,
But that’s not how it’s meant to be,

I guess it’s not so bad,
I’m not here on my own,
And there are those who look to me,
I’ll take them by the hand,
And try to lead the way,
I know it’s what you’d want to see,

For I have things I have to do,
And I have somewhere else to be,
I know that if you could,
You’d find a way to see us through,
But that's not how it's meant to be,

Wow! Thank you Philip! I love what you did with this song. I really like your vocals and the nylon string fills and solo! I'm very touched knowing you thought something I wrote was worthy of your time and talent!

Quietly does it
Thanks for the comment - that was part of what I was trying to achieve. I wanted it to sound a bit solitary and reflective.

Sensitive
Hi Philip. Kudos for your very sensitive treatment of Andrew's wonderful, emotional song. The understated vocals work really well contrasted with the soft nylon string fills and the sparse arrangement. Well done, Regards, Peter.

Great song
Yes, a good performance is a lot easier when the song is doing most of the work! I certainly tried not to muddy it up too much. I nearly sold that nylon strung guitar some years ago - glad now I didn't!

Beautiful
You have taken an already beautiful and touching song and imbued it with even more feeling. As an "orphan" from the age of 22 on, this stirred quite a few emotions, just as when I heard Andrew perform it the first time. Thanks again and take care now, Michael

Emotional songs
Thanks for the comment. I had hoped that the performance would bring up individual images for each listener. Unfortunately, it's a topic that will face all of us at some stage. Of course, the final verse is about renewal and life continuing, too which adds something uplifting to the poignancy. Andrew has written a great song.
