Description
I was talking with our friend, Anne Cozean, and we both thought it might be nice to try a duet together. I looked through some of my songs, and found three or four that might work pretty well, but looked at this one, which I had already started on, and saw that with just a few adjustments, it would be a good one to do. The fact that I was eager to get started had a lot to do with the selection too. Anne sent me a track, and nailed it the first time. (These pros make it look so easy.)
Neil Porter’s bass has graced several of my songs, but listening to his music, I just had to ask for some of his six-string work too, and was not disappointed. He had a natural feel for this song, and gave it the sound it should have had all along. He said he would like to have a go at the mixing also, so I was happy to relinquish that chore as well. My equipment has bells and whistles, but they just make noise.
There are some excellent drummers that I’ve had the pleasure to work with here at MacJams, but this is the first time I’ve played with Fred E. Jam (no "s" and no relation to Mac). Loob has put out some great music and has collaborated with many of the best musicians here. This beat he has graciously provided made a world of difference to Overflow, and I find comfort in knowing that the puny little drum track I had in the beginning will never be heard.
I had another title for this song, but Anne suggested Overflow, which is more descriptive than what I had. It’s a song about a problem that’s been around since the dawn of time, and there is a solution, but no song can give that to you. As with all my songs, they’re not to tell you what to think, but simply, to think.
This fine crew and myself hope you enjoy our song. T

These Macjammers are:

Anne Cozean (Sisters) on vocals
Terry Pearson (Davisamerica2) on vocals, acoustic guitars, keyboard, and harmonica
Neil Porter (Jiguma) on lead guitar, bass guitar, and mixing
Fred E. Jam (Loob) on drums

Lyrics
Overflow

I must admit I’m scared of leaving, but I feel like I’ve been growing strong
There ain’t no arguing that road is lonely, and I pray not long
Throw one more log onto the fire, then I’ll be gone

I emptied out that old brown suitcase of all the memories down through the years
You’ll want some pictures of smiling babies. They’ll bring you tears
And I found that one you wrote on the back of, and you called me “Dear”

We started out well enough
That was so long ago
So much water ‘neath the bridge
It was bound to overflow
There’s no gathering up those angry words
That struck like thunderbolts
No calling back like hunting dogs
Those awful words we spoke

The only rule was ‘stay together’. They say that all’s fair in love and war
We could not foresee the consequences of those slamming doors
And parting words now would just be pointless. We said them all before

We’ve got to find our independence. I breathe in, you breathe out
We shared one life, but that just can’t be what love’s about
It’s a waste of time to love when the heart’s been hollowed out

We started out well enough
That was so long ago
So much water ‘neath the bridge
It was bound to overflow
There’s no gathering up those angry words
That struck like thunderbolts
No calling back like hunting dogs
Those awful words we spoke

MacJams is an excellent resource for female voices. Anne and you have made my songs shine, and are definitely among my favorites. The different styles these artists bring with them can give your song an amazing makeover. I brought it to them half-baked, then they started cookin'. Thanks for the kind words. Terry

Good storytelling - I think the duet is a great way to tell a breakup story because it can give perspective from both sides. Strong vocals & performances from this all-star band. Nice mix.

Terry! Outstanding in every possible way! A great pop country song with a classic 80s country vibe. Of course Neil, Fred, and Anne bring excellent performances. But what is really knocking me out is your vocal. This places you in the perfect register and your phrasing is wonderful! Wow! Oh, and I love that lonesome harmonica.

Thanks for stopping by, Andrew.
This one has always felt pretty comfortable to sing. You're probably right about it being my register. I wrote it quite a while back using mainly keys. Doing different variations with guitar is probably where it picked up the country feel. I'm grateful to Neil for keeping both 6 and 12 strings in his mix. I use both initially just for fullness till the "real" musicians show up. He cleaned my tracks up, and made room for his own guitars, that "classic 80s vibe." I love it! We appreciate the comments. T

This was a joy to "work" on. Terry is such a great writer (and singer, and guitar player and harmonica-ist and keys-guy). He is also able to pull the right people together to make a great track. Everyone knows Anne could sing the white pages and make them sound great, and Fred has a great feel on the drums. I had a ball doing my bits on this.
Thanks everyone - and cheers from Oz!

Like I said before, you gave it the sound it should have had all along. After hearing your guitar, I knew I wasn't in Kansas anymore (or Oklahoma.) And thanks for the superb mixing. You got the band into the same room, and even Anne and I on the same mic. Pretty fancy footwork! And I love that "ride off into the sunset." Some sweet guitar there! Thanks again, friend. Terry

A truly excellent piece of music, love the way it makes transitions almost between styles. A kind of folky track that then moves into country and even touches the pop! Love the way you made the duet work so well and the band were all awesome, bravo to all!

That's the beauty of these collabs.
Even though the talents blend together overall, each style surfaces to center stage at some point making some interesting changes. Nobody's individual creativity is hidden here. You can listen over and over, focusing on something different each time, and it kind of like hearing a new song each time. I see this in a lot of these MacJams collabs. Thanks for the comments, Neil. Thank you once again for inviting me to play with you, Terry. It was a Good Experience being in this with you vocally. Neil's bass soooo hit the right mood, and Fred knows how to tear a song apart technically and put it back together again sounding even better. Kudos to Neil for the final mix. Love doesn't work out....
Third song I've listened to this evening about how love starts out fine and then somehow loses its way. Hope it's not a trend...That notwithstanding, this is such a solid arrangement, just simple and uncomplicated: a perfect "folksy-style" number that lets your two vocals take the spotlight — and they do so beautifully. (Of course, you need some soft strings behind this!!! Hint. Hint.)...Harmonica is just the right touch for the bridge. Beautifully done and so pleasant the listen to.

Hi, Paul. Glad you stopped by for a listen.
Love fizzling out? We know that true love never does. In so many of my songs I tend to take on characters in order to put foolishness on display. Vigilance is good, but doom looms for high maintenance relationships. I'm glad you liked the harp. And you're right about the soft strings. You spoiled me. More and more of my songs I'm finding could use a little Paul Page in. Hope you stay open. There's more to come. Terry

getting goosebumps during the break - and in awe of the lyrics and vocal performances. Musically - everything is in the right place and mixes so well. Great guitars - bass - drums and all the little extras from the keys to the harmonica. Nice rattle/ride effect on the drums in the chorus.

That's a good way of saying it. I made mention of that to Neil. It's a totally different ride sound than I used (I let Neil pick the drumkit), and it's kinda grown on me. It's kinda cool to let someone else pick that. I played V-drums and then sent Neil the MIDI. Worked out well I think. Nice job Neil.

'neath the bridge
I love these MJ-wide collaborations. This is a great song and there are many excellent performances in it.

I have a nit to pick with the overall sounds. That persistent I-IV-I alternation in every measure starts feeling like a straightjacket pretty quickly. Everyone feels force to go along with it, and it becomes a little repetitive to me. Mind, every individual part is beyond reproach, given the chord structure, but adding them all together they all emphasize the same element of the arrangement. For the guitars that's kinda inevitable, but bass and drums could have played something a little rhyhtmically independent of the rhythm that the chord progression implies.

Other than that, great stuff.

Thanks for dropping by, Vic, and for your comments and tips. I can see what you're talking about, and a lot of your points are areas that have kind of bothered me about this song. Almost all my songs were written pre-MacJams and presented as is, luckily I have talented friends here that make it work. But, knowing now what I've picked up I can see why I have problems playing some of these songs solo. "Straightjacket" is an appropriate term. Often when I'm performing Overflow I find myself asking myself, "Ok, what else?" I'll probably leave these old tunes as is, but hopefully utilize a new set of guidelines and tips picked up here from MacJams when constructing new material. I appreciate your listening and honest critique of Overflow, Vic. Hope you keep listening.
