Please Come Back To Stay (Revised w/ Loob, LHolden & Jiguma)

Description
This is my second posted collaboration on MJ. The concept is fantastic, and in practice it is even better.

I posted the first version of this song just before Christmas last year (http://www.macjams.com/song/65189) and it was well received. There were several suggestions to improve the song though, foremost from Loob (Freddy) who was keen to put a real drum track to the song to replace the GB loops in the last verse.

Freddy produced a wonderful drum track that I quickly accepted and we were off.

It was also suggested that a bridge might break up the four straight verse structure of the first version and I worked with Freddy to add a bridge and re-write the lyrics back into three verses. I also added in a short acoustic solo in the middle.

We also felt that the song could do with some harmony vocals (the original had none) and Freddy suggested Laura Holden would be a good person to ask. Laura came on board willingly and laid down some fantastic harmony tracks that added some real class to the song IMHO.

With drums throughout, we now needed a bass track and I asked fellow Aussie, Jiguma (Neil Porter) if he had a chance to add his skills to the song. He also accepted and, again, without delay, laid down a rock solid, sympathetic bass track that added depth to the rhythm section underpinning the song.

Freddy persevered though numerous tweaks to the song and mixed and mastered the final product with his usual skill. And here it is. We hope you like it.

Regards, Peter.

Lyrics
Please come back to stay (revised) – Peter Bowen (2011)

Birds sit on my awning, they sing and dance and play
But they’re waiting for a warning, alert to fly away
And me, I’m down here grounded; I know I can’t take flight
I’m feeling kind of empty
But I know…. one call from you…. would make it right

My heart it takes a quick turn
Each time the phone bell rings
I pray that it’s you calling
Hold my breath, a reflex thing
I’ve rehearsed our conversation
Each word, just what to say
I’m begging, please be home by Christmas
Please… come back to stay

Bridge
With yuletide bells ringing
Carol choirs singing
Christmas lights upon the bay

I don’t mind admitting
I’ve done my share of crying
Please….. come back to stay

Instrumental (over 2nd bridge)

The kids are doing OK
But they miss their mother’s touch
Thing’s aren’t the same without you
We want you back so much
I hope that all your wandering
Has eased your worried mind
I’m begging, please be home by Christmas
We’re what you set out to find

I hope that all your wandering
Has eased your worried mind
Darling, please be home by Christmas
We’re what you set out to find

I think it was worth it all Pete!
I've had people comparing your work here to Mr. BoJangles, and Everybody's Talking At me (Bread?). I do think you have James Taylor influenced in there too. All good comparrisons! Tastey stuff!

Came up well!
Great job on the mix Freddy, and the drums of course. Peter, this sounds really good with all the additions and adjustments. Laurie's harmonies really add to the flavour - love the "please come back to stay" harmony Laurie.

Wholehearted agreement
Thanks Neil. I agree wholeheartedly about Laurie's harmonies and Freddy's drum track. Your bass added the missing ingredient. It was really great to collab with a fellow Aussie. More to come, hopefully. Take care, Peter.

Really liked this Peter
The topic can go hand in hand with a couple of my own tunes, like the "rest of the story." Love the melody and very fine guitar work. Loob is full of good ideas, and I've benefited a lot from his music experience. This is a good, well-written song, and I love the lyrics. Terry

Collaborations work!
Certainly can hear the difference in the song from the previous version. All the additions are improvements. There's something about real drums that loops can't touch (unless I suppose you're a genius with the loops?), the harmony adds further poignancy and the bass adds solidity. Congratulations to all involved!

Interesting
This one reminds me a little of Chris Rea's 'Driving Home for Christmas' in terms of the beat and effortless flow.

The dynamic, easy accompaniment and bright, flowing movement of the song add something to the lyrics, which paint a rather more 'grounded', static, blue picture, and i found myself imagining how that easy movement could signify the loved one returning along an open freeway (romantic, that i am!). The music allows room for that, i think, even if the lyrics do not.

The beautiful harmonies contributed by Laura bring another layer of meaning to my ear, as if the female half of the equation is also participating in the song, and expressing a similar yearning, adding to the sense of impending reunion!

The lyrics by themselves are truly heartbreaking, but possibilities arise for me in the soundbed, and i am glad they do!

i am always really impressed by the way these collaborations sound so together, and this one is right up there.

Really enjoyed this one.

Thanks and kudos to all.

Marc
