Description
Playing a simple chord progression and the first line jumped into my head. The rest just flowed from there.

Hope you enjoy!

Lyrics
Can You Remember? - Peter Bowen (2011)

[D] Can you remember [A] what it was like to be [G] young?
[D] Can you remember [A] what it was like to be [G] free?
But the [G] passage of [A] time has [Bm] clouded my [D] mind,
Per [G] haps I have [A] blocked it, not [Bm] that much [D] inclined
[G] Am I too [A] frightened? Or [Bm] have I [D] resigned?
I’m [G] unsure if I’d pay to [A] watch a repeat on [D] TV

Can you remember the very first time you were kissed?
A moment to cherish; a treasure not to be missed
But first loves are fragile; they blossom in the spring
Unlikely to linger; they oft have a sting
Do I still have it in me to have one last fling?
Perhaps it’s as well; my memory has learned to desist.

[G] I wonder who, if [F#m] given the chance, would [Em] choose to go back in [D] time?
The [A/C#] life you’ve lived on instant pause /re [A] wind.
The [G] ‘good old days’ of a [F#m] world gone by, when [Em] things didn’t travel so [D] fast
[Em7] Do you think you would really be back in your [A7] prime?

Can you remember long summer days with your friends?
Building a fort and taking it turns to defend?
But where are those friends? Are they still round today?
Or like sands of time, have they drifted away?
The reasons are apt to be harder to weigh
Perhaps that’s why they say, you get what you need, in the end.

Can you remember running your toes through the sand?
Sorting through shells, astride with your dad, hand-in-hand?
But those childlike moments have like run their course
The passage of time’s probably worked to enforce
That all signs of fondness are now often outsourced
Wouldn’t it be great if affection were back in demand?

I wonder who, if given the chance, would choose to go back in time?
The life you’ve lived on instant pause / rewind.
The ‘good old days’ of a world gone by when things didn’t travel so fast
Do you think you would really be back in your prime?

Can you remember what it was like to be young?
Can you remember what it was like to be free?
Or has the passage of time clouded your mind,
Perhaps you have blocked it, not that much inclined
Are you too frightened? Or have you resigned?
Reliving past memories I’m sure comes with no guarantee.

Thoughtful song!
Nice touch on this one Peter. I like the way you bring things in to build the arrangement (even that echo on "rewind"). As usual the lyrics have got something to say. Nice clean production and neat guitar playing - the solo is sharp! Strong finish. Good one!

Echo effect :-)
Hi Philip. Thanks for that. I did spend a while trying to get the arrangement varied enough to keep the song interesting. Jude doesn't like the echo effect :-) I appreciate your comments. Now for our collaboration! Talk soon, Peter.

Very nice work Peter. You know I'm into these acoustic singer/songwriter tracks. I really like your vocal here. There's a lot of character and resonance in your voice. I like your reflective lyrics. The guitars sound great. Nice soloing. And the percussion adds some nice variation to the arrangement.

Just enough variation?
Hi Andrew. Thanks for the kind words re the vocals and the arrangement. I did work pretty hard to keep it flowing whilst having enough variation to keep people's interest. Take care, Peter.

Can You Remember?
First the vocals right at the start grabbed me. Wonderful delicate harmonies and a clear acoustic mix ... nice playing by the way. Just enough percussion to sit comfortably in the bed and it allows your voice to reflect. I can relate to your lyrics as I am being very reflective these days. Great job on this!!

Thank you for the kind and detailed comments, Stan. Glad you like the acoustic mix. Reflective lyrics seem to fit where I am at in my life at the moment. Warm regards, Peter.

Harmonies :-)
Hi Cees. Thanks for the kudos re the harmonies but I have to give up the secret. There are just doubled 7th harmonies using the GB vocal transformer and EQing each differently from the lead vocal. Doesn't work seamlessly on all songs but worked here. Glad you liked this one. Regards, Peter.

A
lovely song Peter, I like your vocal and harmonies.
Nice lyrics too, did they all come quick after the first line? Good to know they just flowed out for you to write this lovely song. I also like the chord progression and acoustic guitar, great recording and a nice mix, very much enjoyed.

The last line...
Hi Bob. Most of the lyrics did flow pretty easily but I spent a lot of time on the last line. When I decided to change the focus of the repeated verse from me to the listener I had real trouble writing a line that worked. 5 or 6 versions met the dust before I was happy (kind of) with what I came up with. Glad you enjoyed the guitar work and mix. Regards, Peter.

Bongos
Hi J. Glad you liked this. The bongos were several different loops I created using the GB pencil. The tambourine was recorded. The percussion adds interest without being overwhelming (I hope). Regards, Peter.

Echo (echo) (echo).....
Hi Freddy. Thanks for finding time to have a listen. The echo effect is linked to the going back in time meaning of the line. I am not entirely happy with it and will probably keep fiddling with it til it is just how I want it but I hope it doesn't detract from the song too much. Take care, Peter.

Stripped down arrangements works well allowing the melody & strong vocals a chance to shine. Harmonies work well. A well structured song. The bridge is a nice contrast both lyrically & musically.

Questions
Really nice summer sound folk tune, with late autumn lyrics.
The funny thing is, I feel much younger than the image in my mirror suggests, or my joints try to remind. It's harder for me to remember my age than to recall what it feels like (still) to be young. Very nice song.

Those hazy days of summer....
Late autumn is right. Very late in my case. I agree that the bloke staring back at me in the mirror is some strange dude who lives in there but, unfortunately, I do have only very hazy recollections of my childhood. Come to think of it, last year is a blur too :-) Ah, what the heck, a red wine will sort everything out. Thanks for listening and I am glad you enjoyed it. Regards, Peter.

More farcical than whimsical....
Hi Julian. Funnily enough I did consider a verse starting, "Do you remember the very first time you made love?" (albeit using slightly cruder vernacular) but It didn't quite have the whimsical element I was looking for. :-) In my case it was probably more farcical than whimsical as well LOL. Glad you liked the tune. JT has nothing to fear. Take care, Peter.

Great performance Peter
and good lyrics which describes perfectly what happens with age. I can remember all those things, tho' wouldn't want to go back to those times, but I wish I was as fit and slim as I was then (my mind is still the same as it was LOL). This song and the performance are excellent, cheers M

I liked that step-down at the end of the first line... crisp mix, nice singing and sweet song-smithing. I'd possibly not use the bongo pattern you had there, the high-note seemed odd in some places. But otherwise this is great, enjoyed humming along.

As always Peter you deliver a song so well, your voice and playing is really nice and relexing to listen too. Lacked an intro for me but thats only a minor thing, well done
PeterB7858 said 2352 days ago (June 13th, 2011)
Needs no introduction :-)
Hi Neil. Thanks for finding time to have a listen. Yeah, I toyed with the idea of an intro. Even had one for a while, but then decided that the key first line needed to get out there quickly and it's a bit different so it stayed as is. Take care, Peter.

Echo
I love this song, except for the echo ... I like the idea, but the execution is not working for me. That aside it's a terrific song with great lyrics. Love that chord progression, I've used it on a number of songs and it never let's me down! I like your voice here, folky but poppy and with great feeling. Bravo.

Nice tune Peter
It's a little strange, but my memories of when I was young - from my late teens on - are still quite strong. There are of course lots of moments of regret for mistakes made and opportunities missed, but generally the memories are of good times with friends and my wife, Jan.

Hope you're feeling OK and that you make a quick recovery.
Cheers from the Far North ;)

Recovering slowly. Transplant is taking it's time kicking in (which was expected). Just got to keep doing the tests, scans, infusions, plasma exchanges and dialysis (still) and wait for things to take their course. Take care, Peter.
