Tell me I Am

Description
While working on some other projects I came across this song - written a long time ago. The instruments consist of an acoustic guitar played a few times with different voicings and an electric bass. I have recently found the iPod app Pro Keys and couldn't resist adding some B3 organ sounds - despite my extremely limited keyboard skills.

Hope you like it!

Lyrics
Tell Me I Am

Your hair tumbles down when you turn your head
It flows around your shoulders when you smile
You teach me so much, about how to live
By sitting still and listening for a while.

Smile for me now I will sing for you
A hand reaching out through a song
Dreams of how it will be, hopes from what it is
Smile the night on us, where it belongs

And it can be
When I am with you
Tell me I am

Velvet in the evening glow, a glass of wine
Your eyes say so softly “Look to me”
We’ll search all the seasons, open up the spring
When all the life that’s opening we will see.

And it can be
When I am with you
Tell me I am
Tell me I am

Again I favor one of your tunes -
serene lyrics + untarnished delivery singing method ~ a beauty as in 'white bird' . . . the organ seems to supplement just fine.

I have to admit your music is like a breath of air. I pretty open minded musically and enjoy many genres but am drawn to this acoustic style. Lovely harmonies and again I will comment on your very warm voice. It records well. Nice picking and chord progressions. The subtle organ is just enough to add a tasty nuance to the end.

Thanks
Very kind words, Stan - thank you! I'm pleased you liked the organ sounds - it's an area where I need to work on my skills! My voice is improved by the power of modern microphones - I can sing softly and keep the tone and still have it record. Thanks for listening and taking the time to comment.

Warm guitars
Thanks, Andrew. I bought that guitar in 1968 and have always loved playing it. It's one of those "That's my guitar" guitars, if you know what I mean... Thanks for listening and I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Much appreciated, Karen. Glad you like the guitars! I wrote the song a long time ago, but I still remember why I wrote it and who I wrote it for, which helps the singing of it.

Nice picking!
You got a delightful, organic warmth out of the guitars... sort of a John Denver feel to the compositional structure. Very pleasing listen! You exercised restraint with the keyboard, which works out well, the subtlety is an advantage, it adds heft without being intrusive.

Thanks
I appreciate the comments about the guitars. I understand what you mean about the John Denver-like structure - probably both in that folkie style of the 70s?

I have to exercise restraint with the keyboards - I can't play them well enough to get creative! Thanks for listening and for the detailed comments.

Nice guitar
The blending of the different voicings really worked well. I believe the organ was a good thing also. A nice lyrical, flowing folk tune. Timeless and beautiful.

hi phillip.....i always love your vocal delivery....i've said it before. effortless and sincere. this is a beautiful song. the various layered guitar tracks just about hit the right spot. any more and it would be too busy. didn't go for the second vocal track so much....took away some of the intimacy of your delivery. lovely song. thanks. when are you and peter forming a band?

Thanks
Much appreciated that you've taken the time to listen and comment, Julian. You could be right about the second vocal. I guess I just do it because I just do it - but in these quiet pieces it may detract...

Currently Peter is in hospital recovering from a major operation, so it will be a little time before we get a band going! When he's better I'm sure something will appear which has us together - we have done a bit and Neil Porter (Jiguma) has added some magic, too. On hold at the moment...

Very refreshing
This is a really good song and I'm glad I stumbled on it. Super clean guitar work and the duo part is very tight and good harmony work as well. The mix is very well done and it should get a lot of positive comments.

Warm and soft
This was a lovely song to snuggle down into. The measured phrases were well fed to the listener. The guitar backing bubbled below the surface. The subtle organ worked too :)

rhythm unsteady but nice voice and chords, reminiscent of Gordon Lightfoot.

Yes, sometimes the hands don't quite do as they're told when playing, and the two guitars don't always see eye-to-eye! Thanks for the Gordon Lightfoot comparison - he's a favourite of mine.

Phil's gold...
Hi Philip. I finally get a chance to listen to this one. Very much in the Gordon Lightfoot mould (a definite bonus in my opinion). The layered guitars work well. Easy delivery is the key. Enjoyed. Regards, Peter.

I think I nearly went overboard on the layered guitars. I was trying to do two different things and in the process had three - could n't decide what to leave out so put them all in. On the edge of too busy - just makes it, I think. Thanks for the Gordon Lightfoot comparison - I probably should go back to him and listen carefully for some lessons on production of such music! Keep well.
