Description
This is the final draft track from The Muller's Wheel I'll be sharing on MJ. (I think every track from the project has been posted here in some form or another.) Woody's given name is Forrest, so I used it on this track to balance things out, as I used the German version of my last name for Müller's Wheel, the other pure funk piece on the CD.

Forrest's Fire is almost post-funk or progressive funk in spots. The groove I created utilizes not just funky syncopation, but an unusual combination of meters. The time signature employs classic 4/4 sections, yet the downbeat is shifted and the rhythm section emphasizes off beats, and is sometimes felt in 12/8, combined with intermittent 7/8 transition measures. But the true progressive funk feel comes from the way the solo lines are presented, in short bursts of all different lengths. If you tap your foot, you'll realize it is actually mostly a straight 4 beat groove. It seems to shift more than it does. It was designed this way from the start. That's why I arranged the rhythm section the way I did, and asked Woody to enter in the ways he does. Woody crafted his solo lines to lead in and out of those unusual little groovy bursts. I love the result. It completes the project's pilgrimage from swing to bop to fusion to funk... and beyond.

My organ solo is caught in the fade and kind of drifts off into space. Hopefully, it'll make listeners want more?

Speaking of the CD, The Muller's Wheel was released July 4th as a digital download on CDBaby. It has 14 tracks, a few more than what is on the list below, but that's because I added some tracks from Rain Bather that highlight Woody's playing, since this is really a showcase for his sax artistry. Please check it out. I think I'll post something in forums, as well. I'm really happy with the way it turned out. I think it's my happiest music.

Here are all the draft tracks from The Muller's Wheel on MJ:

Seafood Gumbo Bop
Oasis On The Rocks
Saddle Shoe Sally
Lost In The West Village
The Müller's Wheel
Windowshade
Fusion of Minds

Perfect
Thanks. This is helped by being the last song mixed. All the failures of the earlier tunes were considered and addressed. I'm glad you listened in. Thanks for all your help on the mixes to the other tracks. Go MJ!

Funked Up
Thanks. I just listened to Funked Up. We must be in the same altered dimension lately. When you add vocals, like on your track, you have to keep things a little straighter; most of the vocalists I know would strangle me if they had to sing to Forrest's Fire. I dig the hip looseness of your stuff, the funky harmonica, the joy. It's so cool to trade stuff back and forth here, isn't it? Long live funk!

Red hot
Thanks. I always used to say "Let's give 'em hell" before stepping on stage. "Damn straight" was usually the response. Woody brought hell's hippest fire into this track, for sure. I guess we're all damned, sooner or later. Might as well enjoy the heat while he can still throw it around! I'm glad you dug the track.

diversity everywhere
the colors, the textures, the meter, seem to leak out of the headphones and splash against the walls as I watch, changing a beige room into a shimmering cartoon of paisley plumerias. What a tight delight, and incredible writing and performing talents shown here. However, it is you, so I should not be surprised :-) Thoroughly enjoyed, but not sure how to get all the color splashes off my walls now.

splashing against the walls
Thanks. Loved your comments! There I times I stuff too much into a track, nearly burying cool details. I'm glad you could hear all the colors. And thanks for listening in headphones.

You should see the mess on my studio walls! I've stopped trying to clean...

1972 ? felt the groove and the mood ..Its just too clean tone to be that early but the quality of the playing and the arrangement ..good one !

Funk in the mainstream
I think 1972 is where I'd put my earlier straight funk track, Müller's Wheel, but this one is a bit later, stretching the bounds of the R&B roots a bit more. Maybe 1978. George Clinton flirting with psychedelic moments. The era of funk being a true driving force in music was a great one. I could never understand why funk was pushed to the sidelines. Groups that have adopted aspects of funk have always been more interesting to me. Thanks for putting this squarely in that groovy time.

This is a colorful piece! Great instrumentation & shifting rhythms. I like the drifting out at the end, kind of like just slowly walking away after making your day happier. It's happy friendly music.

Funkin' into the sunset
Thanks. Love that visual on the fade. A much better image than if the band was just getting up and abandoning me as I get into my solo! Glad you liked the shifting rhythms. Most of this project has been about happy music. This is the most joyful one, in my ears. I'm glad you thought it friendly as well. Good to hear.

Funk reborn
Thanks. I love to create organic change, a sense of evolution and life in an arrangement. Using hitches and bursts like this can sometimes mess things up, make it seem like the arranger is imposing himself instead of players just flowing and freeing each other. I'm glad the interplay of players and concepts never got in the way of the fun. My hope is it raises the level of funk into something that makes funk live anew. I'm glad you thought the unpredictability made it interesting and drew attention to each moment. I really appreciate that comment.

I guess I see what you mean about the horns
Being in your face. I guess maybe this is a matter of taste, because it feels too loud in the mix to me Tobin. I'm diggin this though. Excellent progression and mix. Very cool funky jazz. I'm diggin it!
egobandit said 2180 days ago (July 8th, 2011)
This just digs into your soul
Those horns re slammin love the very low end horn in the back section, The spacing of the instruments in the mix really makes everything stand out, man all you need is the singer from fishbone to put some slammin lyrics on this, but this is top notch as is! same very cool keys BTW!

High class work Tobin. Totally professional and involving.

I like the space you leave for each of soloists and the fact you keep the solos short and tight.

Aw. I like this kind of feel very much....
Bit of that Meters/Tower Of Power/AWB vibe to it all.... Nicely tight, but a very 'alive' feel to it... Great horn playing, and great keyboards, but it's all sitting on top of some neat bass and drums.... Terrific, Tobin....
