What were you waiting for?
I would have asked if I knew you had one. This sounds great. Is it a recorder style instrument? What makes it different than your other flutes?

Flute
It's a native American flute. Very hard wood, which gives it a bright tone, and it's also my highest pitched NAF. Usually I'm more into the lower instruments.

Love that
wonderful deep bass synth sound...... this is hauntingly beautiful Vic..... the picture says it all about sitting and just relaxing to this; certainly one of, if not the best of your pieces..... great sound, regards M

Clear sailing in monochrome...
sweet lead-in sets the stage, and the clear high range of this flute does indeed seem to float over the synth landscape like the clouds in the photo. Nice bends (lifts) on some of those notes, and fun tongue-trills at the end. Relaxing, and great recording and performance, despite the lack of coda, and taking the lazy fade out instead :-)

Butch Gone WILD!!
First of all, is the Butch Hall cocobolo flute pitched in C? I seem to recall that native american flutes are often pitched in F#.

Nice photo to accompany the first portion of the album. Then you GO WILD after the 5-minute mark, and the peaceful repose of the subject no longer applies. Lots of fast notes and trills -- cool!

Best regards,
Cameron
Out of The Woods for 2 weeks parked at the Fairgrounds in Pleasanton CA where there is actually a fast internet connection so I can finally catch up on hearing a few MJers' tunes!!

pitch
First of all, NAF are (almost always) in a minor pentatonic scale. Secondly, you can get them in any key. I have, low to high: A-Bb-C-D-E-F#-Ab-A-Bb, and this particular one is a high E, so it is happiest playing e-g-a-c-d-e. The notes in between are somewhat tricky to very tricky (the low F requires opening the bottom hole by a tiny fraction.)

Of course the flute work is brilliant. But I'm really just as knocked out by the beauty of the synth backing.

i am really digging the 2 different styles blending together. (the electronic with a analog flute). the trills near the end is pretty amazing.

first thought is that this is a perfect blend of modern day and the past. Nice sounds and playing. A bit haunting and yet soothing at the same time. Sounds great.

Impressive
the bed made me think of "Top Gun" and 80s, but the NAF over the top makes this soar to new heights. It's not easy to put something so "real" and organic against synths...but I think you pulled this off nicely. Arrangement wise, I might have shortened some of the more improvised? almost birdlike sections after the 5min mark.

Beautiful
You create a great atmosphere with this piece. How did you build the tune? Did you start with something and then improvise? It has a "walk through the forest on a misty morning" feel to it, then a "birds start a chorus" element later in the song. Delightful!

finally...
I have been waiting for the Butch Hall cocobolo flute. And it is well worth the wait. Nice atmospherics... really such control, creativity, and feeling in your playing... Nicely done, Vic.

this is cool
It sounds like it could easily be used as a film soundtrack.
This flute has an interesting tone.
Very enjoyable. The trills that started at about 4:00 and continued to the end are great.

This is an incredibly expressive sound, and doesn't sound that easy to do either.

Uniqueness
Nice improv … from the slower paced beginning … to graduated intensity of the final passages.

While I think in similar terms when it comes to making music, that each time I work on a new composition I try to somehow tweak it to be a little different than anything else I've ever done, a more apt parallel for this approach for me is how I often undertake a new drawing. A new pen offers a unique drawing experience. It might be the size of the tip, the feel of the grip on the barrel, the flow or viscosity of the ink, the color coming out of the tip … but all of these slight perceptions go into affecting the creative process to produce something different. I'm guessing playing a cocobolo hardwood flute has its own peculiar attributes that affect the outcome … and that comes out … as you interact with the instrument.

I don't think
you can any wrong. This sounds majestic. Reminded me of some of the music from Chariots of the Gods. You are brilliant, Vic. We're lucky to have you here. Your flute and your backing music dance and sing. Thanks.
