The Shallow End (with David Hitt)

Description
This is a special tune for me because it's the first time I have worked together musically with my long-time friend David Hitt. David is not a musician, but is a huge music fan and one hell of a writer, which is how we met. Twenty or so years ago, we were in journalism school together. We worked together then and were colleagues in the newspaper business for years. At one point even working in neighboring towns.

Though we both ran screaming from the newspaper business, we've stayed in touch over the years and, last year, we worked on a writing project together. After it was finished, and knowing David's love of music, I asked if he would be interested in working on some songs together. He could supply the lyrics, theme, mood, even give ideas about the style, and I would try my best to realize them musically.

This is our first attempt. David produced some great, touching lyrics, and I did my best to find an appropriate musical setting for them.

BTW, this isn't the first work here at MJ he's been associate with. Back in 2008, I wrote Homesteading Space fanfare in honor of the publication of his first book - Homesteading Space: The Skylab Story.

I hope you folks enjoy it and we already have another tune in the works.

Lyrics
The Shallow End
©2011 Lyric by David Hitt
Music by Joseph Gurner

I know the way you laugh
I know the way you kiss
I know the part of your hair
But there's something you hide away

I want to know you
Better than a friend
You share your heart
But hide the deepest part

I want to know all there is about you
I wanna be Closer than a friend
I wanna dive right in to who you are

But you keep me
In the shallow end

I see the look on your face
I see the way you smile
And I wonder what it is you hide
Behind your distant eyes

You always give me
so much
But there’s part of you
I can't touch

I want to know all there is about you
I wanna be Closer than a friend
I wanna dive right in to who you are

But you keep me
In the shallow end

I want to know
Know all there is about you
I wanna be
Closer than any friend
I wanna dive right in to who you are
I want your deepest heart

But you keep me swimming
In the shallow end

I want to know your deepest heart
to know where you’ve been
I want to know you better
Better than any friend

I want to know
Know all there is about you
I wanna be
Closer than any friend
I wanna dive right in to who you are
I want your deepest heart

But you keep me swimming
In the shallow end

The Shallow End (with David Hitt)
Great songwriting collaboration and a really nice production. The chord changes are really nice with some interesting turns and twists. Excellent arrangement. The lead and backing vocals are very good. One of your best mixes. Clean and well balanced.

The Shallow End
Way to realize Joe. Pretty cool all around. The progression in particular is awesome. Maybe sometimes (small nit) some of the overlapping chords could have been in a higher register, as it would get muddy at times in the mid-low space. An excellent realization none the less. Nice keys btw...

I'm getting
a very Brian Wilson vibe here Joe. I like your vocals and the subtle harmony washes. David's words work really well. An all-round cool post. Congratulations, and cheers from Oz,

Lovely song
I can imagine this being used in the sentimental part of a movie at the tearjerker part. Very well done all round.
