We Don't Need Much

Description
This song was based in experimentation with Logic's Delay Designer and with an autotune freebie I found. It's kind of a tribute to a band I used to be in: we would drag all kinds of instruments we really couldn't play, synths, toy instruments, drum machines, casios and samplers up on stage with us. it was a warped take on pop and most of the ambience was improvised.

Most of this was done with EXS instruments I have made (actually no synths on here), a couple of different mellotron instruments and some drums/percussion. The ending was originally in the middle of the song, but I hated it there, so I moved stuff around and stuck it on the end. Funny thing is I played it for APOD and Bryn sent me an email suggesting the very thing while I was in the middle of doing it.

Lyrics are about my family (pretty obvious). Picture is something I took down the street when picking up some milk.

Lyrics
the days are growing long
the summertime is here
there's music in our home
the summertime is here
so much left it's just begun
our lives are so entwined
we got married we had children
our lives are so entwined

we don't need much
we've got everything we need
we try so hard
we've done everything we should
and every night
i sleep like a baby
i know it's right
i know we're a family

let's remember to embrace
before the day is gone
we try to feel the way we did
when we were young

theres so much left it's just begun
our lives are so entwined
we got married we had children
our lives are so entwined

we don't need much
we've got everything we need
we try so hard
we've done everything we should
and every night
i sleep like a baby
i know it's right
i know we're a family

and when we're tired
and need some space
we'll say some things
that should never have been said
i'm sorry when
I act that way
i'm sorry when
I act that way
i'm sorry when
I act that way

Your vocals got me from the start... love the tune ... it's trips along nicely and has a catchy melody ... great harmonies. Real fun sounds you added to the mix. Real enjoyable piece ... almost 60's psychedelic.

Truer words I have to hear. You have a great eye for art (pic), as well as ears. Looked up EXS as they sound very cool. Nicely done.

Interesting you mentioned Of Montreal
Stella left for college and I got her a new laptop - transferring all of her music over from the old one I grabbed a lot of OM and feel heavy. What a great band. I really like the changes you made from last night. Excellent song and it's nice to hear about family life.

let's remember to embrace
before the day is gone
we try to feel the way we did
when we were young

- great lyric.

Nice recording
Great ending, nice harmonies and it sounds like a sister track to Strawberry Fields at that point.
I'm with Bud on the lyrics - in particular the lines he pulled out - really nice.

I like your picture too; I've got a little boy just the right size for that bike. The shadow will remain when this time has passed - hopefully he will have grown up and gone on to start his own family but who knows what the future holds.
Selfishly it brings tears to my eyes just to think about these times ending (he is in a hurry to grow up).
Thanks Michael.

selfish? maybe, but I have a fantasy where the wife and I are immortal and eternally 30 years old. the kids stay at 7 and 4 forever and life is perfect.

it's cool to watch them grow, and breaks your heart at the same time. kids are the best.

Sweet
You even managed to get a "THAT's a good one" from the wife, who is not always so happy about all the (great) music I'm playing from MJ ;-)

I was also in the mood after having listened to Bowie classics yesterday. Sweet song, great lyrics. Thanks for sharing, it's got to be a keeper...

Take care,
Henke

classic
i love the sleep like a baby line. and the electronic claps. and the bubbly little melody in the chorus. man this is just classically great pop. upbeat, playful, and dead serious.

i'm just sitting here thinking about the lyrics, they appeal to me so much, because i feel that way too. and yet it's total nonsense, because humans are so needy, and we all need so much all the time. but that doesn't make the sentiment any less true. it's a koan: i don't need much - everything will suffice. or that scene at the end of 'the jerk' - all i need is this ashtray...and this lamp...and this dog...ha

so true...
All we need is family!

Fun instruments being used. I love the bubbly sounds with bells, makes it light and happy. The drum pattern is classic to let it run the whole length of the song. We had casios back in the day-always great for bell sounding tones.

Thanks for the sweet tune.

Flowerbed
of sound. It's so pretty and earnest. So many nice flourishes. And I love the sentiment. It's a very sweet theme that I think most of us can identify with. And in addition to the great melody/progression in the outro, I love how real it gets. Kind of keeps it from getting too sugary. Love all the percussion elements. Wish I had done this.
