Guitars on a Sunny Day

Description
Another few hours spent playing guitar! This time the chord structure is a bit more involved than "Guitars on a Rainy Day". Except for the bass, all tracks played on the Maton FG 100 (the FG stands for "Folk Guitar" - I bought it new in 1968!). The backings tracks (two fingerstyle, one strummed) are completely acoustic, using a mike to record them. One of the fingerstyle tracks is played in standard C chords, the other is played in G with a capo on the 5th fret. For the lead line, I plugged the guitar in using the Fishman pickup.

Hope you like it!

THe photo is of the Gippsland hills in the south east of Australia.

Lovely...
I enjoyed this refreshing and inventively played piece from you Peter--your mix sounds really good (and I understand mixing for guitar is quite a headache if I'm not mistaken). You make that instrument sing--thanks for sharing this (and hope you are doing better these days) Michael

Thanks
Much appreciated, Michael. Re my health, I think you may be thinking of my good friend PeterB7858 who is now (mostly) out of hospital and improving. We did do a collab together (http://www.macjams.com/song/68946) a little while ago. Glad you liked the music and especially glad you liked the mix - it's an area I'm still working on!

Guitars on a Sunny Day
I knew going in this was instrumental. But the whole time this gently piece is inviting your instantly recognizable vocal to join in.

Glad you liked it - I must admit I'm very fond of the sound of that guitar, even if sometimes it doesn't play the notes that are in my head :-)

Great playing and really
wonderful melody carrying this along. The overlapping voice of the same guitar sounds so sweet. Nice post - glad I stopped by.

I appreciate the comments on the melody, which sort of emerged from the chords somehow... Glad you liked the multiple guitars, too.

Yea!!
This sounds like something that (admittedly I may show my ... naivete here) sould land on Kenny Loggins/Dollie Parton's desk ... It's already killer but with the right lyric ... can you say 'Award Worthy'? :D ... Instant download and if you're interested in an orchestration holla back! :)

Well I hope they're paying attention, Scott - that would be exciting! Feel free to play with it in any way you like - killer lyrics, orchestrations - all good!

Franchise development...
Hi Philip. I can see a franchise developing here... Guitars on a misty day; Guitars on a partly cloudy day; Guitars on a day that starts out sunny but then clouds over.... I'll take 15% of the action as your manager and naming rights sponsor :-) But seriously, there is some very tasty work going on here. The harmonic opening is nice and the lead work is very much in sympathy with the backing tracks. Evocative listening and the Maton is sounding very nice indeed. The Fishman seems to work quite well with it. Like the bass, too. Good post! Talk soon, Peter.

My new one
Yes, I think I'll start work on "Guitars on a cloudy day with showers developing". At least it makes thinking of titles easy - I just check the weather report! I do like that Maton - was down at Cargill Guitars yesterday and James Cargill has talked to me about getting a pickup put in it - the new ones don't destroy the guitar the way they used to. I think I'll do it...

Guitars on a Sunny Day
From the start I liked the harmonic pings you started with. What sweet guitar playing .... wonderfully melodic. It works beautifully as an instrumental but I can hear your smooth voice on this.... Thanks for the acoustic treat ... and well done mix.

Glad you liked it, Stan. I appreciate the comments about a vocal being added to it, too. Can't think of anything at the moment, but I'm hoping inspiration will strike at some stage! Glad you liked the mix, too - I think I'm starting to understand a bit more about that aspect of the music.

sculpting & shaping
finely sculpted and impressive -
the plucks put forth & gliding notes are given such persona -
each of them exuded - seem to come out just right.

Guitars
Hi Phillip - wow, your guitar(s) sound wonderful - you are really a master! although i understand why andrew would say he wants to hear your voice over this, it is also an exquisite stand alone piece. i guess, being an instrumentalist myself, i have a bias for letting the guitar be the voice here. great job!

I'm delighted you like it, Karen! Maybe I will add some words sometime (or maybe someone else will?) but there are times when I like the freedom to develop something instrumentally - and I can make the guitar hit notes that my voice can't get anywhere near!

Sometimes its nice just to play and you play this very nicely
Philip18 said 2138 days ago (August 18th, 2011)

Yes, Neil - sometimes I do like to just put a backing track down then solo over it for as long as it takes to get something (or not). Thanks for listening!

Glad you liked the mix, Dave. Although I often think there can never be enough guitars in a track, I know it's not really true and I do try to stop when saturation point has been reached! Thanks for listening and taking the time to comment.

Hey! This is great!! It has one of the most forgotten things many instrumentals have here, a melody! A beautiful melody too. Just all around great song and recording! A full 10!

Glad you liked it, Neal. I didn't try to get complicated on this, and although I was making it up as I played, once I found something that sounded smooth and melodic (took lots of takes) I went with it. Thanks for listening and taking the time to comment.

Not only is the fingerstyle playing first rate, so is your attention to sound quality. Most enjoyable Philip.

Cheers,
Doug

I suspect that the guitar is responsible for most of the sound quality - I've still got a lot to learn about what you can do to get the best sound in a recording. I appreciate you taking the time to listen and comment, Doug.
