Description
Galadriel:
She was a royal Elf of both the Noldor and the Teleri, being a grandchild of both King Finwë and King Olwë, and was also close kin of King Ingwë of the Vanyar through her grandmother Indis. Towards the end of her stay in Middle-earth she was co-ruler of Lothlórien along with her husband, Lord Celeborn, and was referred to variously as The Lady of Lórien, The Lady of the Galadhrim, Lady of Light or The Lady of the Wood. She had a daughter Celebrían, making her Elrond's mother-in-law and Arwen's grandmother.

Lyrics
I had to take a break from my next piece Photosynthesis.

This piece was inspired of course by Tolkiens character Lady Gladriel, the fair and most powerful matriarch of the Lothlorien. To behold such beauty would still the forest from all sounds. I love her character, because of her wisdom, beauty, power and most of all, she resisted the temptation in taking the Ring of Power.

Howard Shore is one of my favorite soundtrack composers and a big influence of this piece. Haha no original points on this one :) I created a drone patch with a high value of LFO’s that creates an electric vibrato with high resonant buzzing (I hope its not too much) and a choral voice that reminded me of Lord of the Rings, so I had to give tribute and composed this piece. I didn’t have any recordings of birds or water, so I used the standard LE FX loops. I hope you will enjoy this one or at least bring back the fondness for such a wonderful story of hope.

Beautiful
sound for a beautiful lady.

Bit of a Tolkien nut myself and really enjoyed this. i like the way the power that was in her comes through after the minute, along with the sylvan grace and elegance.

It is an interesting moment for me when she is tempted by the proximity of the One Ring in the Lord of the Rings. She paints a future for a moment when a Dark Queen might replace the Dark King, when all would 'love her and despair'.
The whole book, indeed the whole of Tolkien's work suddenly lurches, uncertain on its spiritual axis, as if poised to turn for a moment upside down. A evil that is beautiful, a female darkness that seduces....the whole opus would crumble before her....at least from the male readership point of view!!

i loved listening to your piece.

Hi Marc,
Thanks for stopping by and listening-appreciate it always.

The whole sequence you write about is one of my favorite parts, because we see so much information of what has come to pass and what has yet to come to pass. Images of slavery and destruction that could be very well true, if we don't stay vigilant and make a change soon. Tolkein has a brilliant way of encapsulating fact (tribulations of war) and fiction which always keeps my mind wondering about the world we live in.

Thanks again for your comment. Take care.

Beautiful and Haunting
Patty,
This is quite an epic in itself, telling a mythical story with the magic of fairies and those subterranean beings that so inspire us. The opening flute counterpoint/choir is just lovely, but that middle section!!! Such a rich and lush bed of sound that you create. It is really quite mesmerizing, the choir singing with a haunting suspension above all the mist. You have taken such exquisite care in building this number and the results are just a beautifully-crafted piece of cinematic musical art. Oh, my...that fade is magic. This is easily one of the very best pieces in this genre that I have heard here or anywhere else. I hope you get a ton of hits. This number is stellar.

I always appreciate your wonderful comments! You are really too kind.

At first I wasn't too sure if I was going to pursue this. Stepping back from this one for a little bit was what I needed to continue working on it. Hopefully as I learn more I will implement more instruments to make it more orchestral like. Until then I will continue to use Drones as fillers :)

Hi Patty.....
My oh my....I agree with everything that everyone else has said. I add to this my own thoughts of 'what could be' that you invoke by your stirring but yet mesmerising piece of cinematic magic and cinematic majesty.

This is an excellent piece of film music, fitting for such a lady as The Lady of Light.

Take care.

Hi Paul
Thanks for the lovely comment-always appreciate them!

I'm really glad you enjoyed this piece. The "what could be" statement is very interesting in my opinion. I would like to know more in your own opinion? Mine: is that, and I may be going off on a tangent, is that music can change consciousness, therefor changing the course of destiny. I may be naive but that's how I feel... I welcome your thoughts :)

Thanks again,

I admit I wasn't too sure about this one ...
I read the comments first, thought about what I think about the character of Galadriel, and how you might choose to express it. Then, I pressed "Play," and was swept away.

There is an interplay of organic, musical -texture- throughout the piece, with surprises like the cymbal crash at 2:30, the underlying pulse at 3:20 ... a slow, inexorable build-up to a climax that then pulls gently back from that ... and throughout it all, a very elegant use of the entire sound-space. This piece reminds me very much of the early works of Vangelis.

Mystical and Serene
with a hint of the power that lies beneath. This is a wonderful treatment Patricia. It evolves slowly (what elf was ever in a rush) and the soundbed is rich and engaging.

Howard Shore is also one of my favourite cinematic composers, and LOTR is a masterpiece of themes woven with a gift few have. This piece is not quite his style, but I think the gift you both have has similar roots.

Best wishes,
Doug

Hi Doug
Thanks for the nice comment. I can only aspire to write anything remotely close to his Howard Shore's style. Mainly, his influence was just the bits and pieces that sound (to me) like it would be related to the soundtrack. Therefore creating the theme of this piece. Thanks for pointing that out, sometimes I have to clarify the statements I make :)

just watched LOTR again the other evening
However, your genealogy above sounds a bit more "Silmarillion"-ish :-) This was excellently written/arranged. The only problem I had was the gritty-sounding synth that appears briefly around 3:18, which didn't seem to fit with the softer pads, it felt too distorted/industrial, compared to the other voices. But wow, this is indeed sweepingly cinematic, and does evoke elven mystique and power.

PatriciaGirl said 2207 days ago (September 6th, 2011)
Hi Eduard
When I did my short research on Gladriel, wiki came to mind. I wondered if the source is from The Silmarillion; which would make more sense.

The part you refer to at 3:18-3:25 is slightly higher in level of resonance, which I couldn't or don't know how to control. My patch creation skill is still inadequate to tame that beast, at least for now. Looking at the original project files in LE, there is a considerable amount of volume reduction in that area-sorry that it wasn't enough :) Live and learn. Thanks for pointing that out :)

Take care, and I hope you will be back soon!

The Lady of Light
Lush sound, fine arrangement and build I enjoyed. I also liked the touches of forest sounds towards the end, as I felt overal this had more sci-fi leanings (Bladerunner sprang to mind) than the green, nature/natural sounds and pipes/flutes I would have expected somewhere in a piece inspired by Galadriel. Thanks for sharing.

Vangelis is a favorite of mine. Love his soundtrack themes :)

The sound textures I will admit have a more of a sharper edge here. It might of suited me better, if I'd softened it up a bit, or added more natural sounding textures. What I’m hoping to achieve was more of an electrifying aura or environment during the time she appears, then revert to more natural sounds when she leaves. Oh well-hehe

Creating patches for pieces like this is not always that easy for me. Patch creation is an art form in itself. I love it though. Like a painter mixing colors for the right theme and setting :)

yes I can hear the similarities
but you've made this all your own. the gong strike after the opening bit was totally unexpected and wonderful in getting my attention. this is full of the awe I imagine such a figure would instill. I really like the buzzing that you bring in and out, and the drone works perfectly to add that level of menace to the sound. Excellently crafted - I could imagine this to be only the first of many pieces in this story. I love the pacing of it especially - not at all hurried. Very nice.

...so much for the lovely comment. Creating a sound bed for the imagination to run wild, is really what I love to do. When I first saw the series of movies, I was especially captivated by Gladriel, or maybe the actress-who knows. Her essence, power and beauty was enough to inspire creating such a piece. Hopefully more inspiration will come for the next challenge.

Thank you
For your very kind words. I'm really glad you enjoyed it. The mixing for surround sound would be fun, but don't have any experience to know where to start. I wonder if is a forum question on that hmmm...

Thanks for stopping by whether late or not. It's always wonderful to hear from artists such as yourself :)

Movielicious
This does indeed sound like a movie soundtrack, and one that I would listen to by itself. You may be interested that Mr Tolkien used to live near my home town in the UK, and I have spent many, many happy hours wandering through Mirkwood, or Cannock Chase as we Staffordians know it. I didn't see many elves, but there were lots of interesting fungi.

Awww...
Wonderful to hear that whether no elves or not. I would love to have such scenery nearby instead fake earth toned shopping centers and mini malls.

Thanks for the comment ;)

Thank you
For listening I really do appreciate it. I didn't think this piece would get that much plays out of it. It's nice to be wrong in this case :)

Hi Karen
Thanks so much for stopping by. Lol I'm always late to the party as well in Real Life XP. Anyways, this whole piece sounds and all were composed using the magic of the Roland X8. Of course some of the lower registered tones are modified by me: details in description.

I really appreciate the encouragement I get from you and from others here. It makes me so happy that I can share my lil piece with everyone. You playing is such a delight to listen to, and to watch the video of your playing is such a treat. Thanks for being a MJ's friend :)
