Description
The photo is of a temple in Bangalore visited briefly during a film shoot in February. The field recording that opens this piece was made there by Ben Posnack - our sound man. It was the last thing added to this piece which originally started as a loop exercise one evening. All that is left are the drum tracks and the flute and organ which were both played on a keyboard. I've been experimenting with modifying and playing an electric bass with a violin bow and the bass tones you hear are one track clean and then effected with fuzztone and chorus - recorded with just the drums. After adding a digital Tanpura drone and playing the Boldt Sitar voice I turned on the organ and flute tracks and left them as they were - somewhat out of place and foreign to the piece (to my ear). I then remembered Ben's recording from the temple and dropped it in with a little reverb.

Thanks Ben - and Corra Films.

Here's a link to the forum thread on the evolution of the bass mod still in progress:

What a cool piece. The field recording really sets the mood. Interesting bass tone with the fuzz and chorus ... and you played it with a bow ... wow!! I would say a very successful experiment .

Pretty grimy
That baseline across the jam is really powerful. At first listen I don't even recognize the Indian influence, but as the jam progresses I can hear it in the rhythm and then in some of the instruments.

tried it - but it's too much. The Tanpura is my favorite instrument. Left alone I'd use it all the time.

Mystery
This piece is deeply evocative of the Mystery with a capital "M" . . . wow. That effected bass is spot on!! The piece maintains a dark tension that is so evocative of places exotic and unseen. Beautiful.

Really nice track. Dark and moody feel in this, and that bass fits perfectly. The bass sounds really great actually, hope you'll use it in other tunes. Did you lower the volume of the chants in this version? Dunno. I kind of almost lose them mid through the song and perhaps they could be a tiny wee bit higher/more clear in the mix? There's also a very cool sound panned to the right, almost melodica-sounding (an artifact?).

bud said 2151 days ago (September 6th, 2011)
I intentionally lowered the chant
preferring to have it float off and return - similar to what that flute I think you are referring to does. I was in a rehearsal studio last night and played the song through the 4x12 bass cabinet. That was interesting. BTW - the single bass string I play was tuned to drop D. Thanks for the detailed comment.

Great piece of music.
Slowly pulls you in with the fade in and then my foot is tapping away madly with the groove.
That bass drum is REALLY kicking through my headphones.
Good use of sounds and instruments.

Nice seeing you again
time for a visit. I was afraid I pushed the kick a little too far. I fuzzed it a little with overdrive so it didn't hurt as much. Maybe it's still too strong.

No, it sounded great to me.
My AKG headphones are pretty loud...and very bass heavy anyway.
I think when it starts clipping and over riding the music that you have to worry but that isn't happening on this track

Hi Kevin....
The description was very interesting. I listened whilst reeading so I followed your words and it almost seemed like a narrative being read in my mind. What's that about I wonder?? Music bacame backdrop to the written word. Mystical.

Anyway.....It's a really enjoyable piece of ethnic music. I know I'll be listening to this a lot more. There's something about it that is peaceful and I like that.

Take care.

Ben actually used a Zoom H1 recorder
because we weren't supposed to bring in our heavier gear. The bass did a neat thing reacting to a fuzz effect - made it start moving around.

very evocative ....
not neccesarily of the sub-continent....I am with Spitlogic on that one......but it is atmosheric and definitely ethnic and very ,very good..

Ah yes ...to clarify the "lack of indian" what it is missing, for me anyway, is the high notes so beloved of Indian music...they do have a lot of upper range ...especially in ladies singing voices. But that is an obbo, not a nit or crit it is very relaxing as it is and stands up as it is.

Behind the veils
I can imagine this as belly dancing music. My ears wanted more subtle variations, to create a sense of morph or evolution or longer motion build and recapitulation, but I dug it all the same.

OHM......
I practiced a little in high school, trying to find that inner spot of focus in my head - it was like a sunburst, really. relax, focus, release all from your thought. Even God could be there, but best to just focus on nothing but inside. Ohm drone was a good way to get there.

TMI? :D

This is what this tune reminds me of

Damn this is cool! I looked in on that bass thread and thought you might be losing it. But I think you're on to something! Had I not read the description I would have thought the bowed instrument I was hearing was a sample of an authentic ethnic bowed instrument. Stretch the limits!

Hypnotic
The bow makes this deep, growling vibration that is very hypnotic. Creative stuff. The steady groove of the kit behind the droning bass and the little accents and melodies that come in here and there are tasteful.

Nice job. This is really cool.

Sounds superb on my speakers....

that bowed bass is very very cool. throwing Ben's soundbite on top of all this was inspired. i think it totally brings the pieces together into a very awesome cohesive "bigger picture". i'm definitely going to have to give this a listen with headphones, to catch all of the overtones. you are so creative. this is brilliant.
