Description
This is a pretty personal song that I wrote the day I got out of hospital (the first time) following my transplant operation. I had endured a couple of days earlier that week that I found very trying, both physically and emotionally. Luckily, a few days later things turned around and I was able to go home to regroup.

Looking back, the thing that kept me going was the support I received from my family and friends, including many of you at MJ. So this song is a tribute to all of you who supported me in any way.

My voice is still not back to what it was pre-operation but I had to get this one posted, so I hope it doesn’t distract from the message too much.

Warmest regards,

Peter ☺

Lyrics
Family and Friends – Peter Bowen (2011)

An eerie light besets the night through the window by my bed
It mirrors confused thoughts that have been swirling through my head
My state of mind is one that has me quivering with dread
I haven’t been deep in this space before
Finding it hard to get back off the floor

The last few days have dragged me down to levels I’ve not known
I’m used to being in control and fending for my own
Now I must rely on the good sense of those around
I’ll have to take small comforts where they’re found
And trust that other’s judgment is quite sound

A moment of quiet, I stare at the ceiling, trying to gain equilibrium
Feelings well, I hold back the tears, hoping that better things will come

Lead

A few days hence, things look much brighter; what a turnaround
The human spirit, ever resilient, a force hard to keep down
Hopefully, I’ll be out by morning, and heading homeward bound
My memory blurs the dark days from my mind
My thoughts turn forward, the past seems hard to find.

A moment of quiet, I stare at the ceiling, calmer equilibrium
Feelings well, I hold back the tears, knowing that better things will come

With family and friends, I made it through, their collective will a strength
I give thanks they stood beside me, and didn’t stay arm’s length
My heart goes out, to one and all, who wished me well and found
Kinds thoughts to help my inner-self rebound
Your impact on my recovery was most profound

You've done a great job with this, Peter. There is an urgency to the tune that suits the message. Obviously a personal statement - part diary, part song, part letter. The guitar playing is hot! Vocals work - the voice has an edge to it that I like (although I understand why you'd want it to go back to what it was). Again, music is part of the healing process... See you soon!

Apprehensive...
Thanks Philip. I was a bit apprehensive about posting such a personal statement but hopefully it stands up musically. I enjoyed doing the lead work, both single takes that I just went with. The vocals were another matter :-) It does has an "urgent" feel, you are right. Talk soon, Peter.

It's the drugs man.....
Hi Sam. Well I suppose I can claim I was affected by all the drugs that I had to take re the lyrics. And it would actually be true. Quite a few of the transplant drugs tend to make you more emotional as a side effect. But perhaps that not so much of a bad thing... Glad you liked the message. Thanks for your support, man. Take care, Peter.

Family and Friends
Family is so important, unfortunately for me I have no friends at least none that I would call friends so when I had my heart attack it was my wife, her sisters, my kids, and brothers in law that gave me hope and healing vibrations, my immediate family are all gone, you song points out in detail many of the same things I felt... Feeling I will never be able to put into music...Bravo for a great moving song...I hope your recovery is fast and painless...

Health problems :-(
Hi S09. Yeah, having a major health problem is a dramatic event in anyone's life. Makes you really appreciate the times when you have good health. Glad that you had some family around to support you when things weren't going that well fro you. It is really important. Putting these thoughts into words and turning them into a song came quite quickly. Getting up the nerve to put them out publicly took a bit longer. Glad you enjoyed it. Regards, Peter.

Excellent song Peter,
and a really top performance vocally as well as instrumentally. The guitar sounds beautiful and I think you're going to be in better voice than you ever were, when as you say , you are fully recovered, if this song is anything to go by. Good thoughts on their way to you Peter...... lovely work here, regards M

Multi takes :-)
Thanks for the kind words, Maurice. The guitar work basically came out in single takes. but the singing... I did have to have quite a few goes at sections to get it sounding anywhere near like I wanted it to sound. But my voice seems to be slowly coming back, so that is good. I appreciate you support. Take care, Peter.

I like your minor chord progression which seems to suit your words and feeling. Your vocals are nice and the harmonies are well done.I like the effect at 1:14 on your vocals ( I don't like to say " oh it sounds like... but it did remind me of America)love the guitar at 3:46 to the fade out... sweet acoustic lead tone and nice playing. Strong tune Peter!

Simple minor progression...
Hi Stan. Thanks for the kind words. Glad you enjoyed it. It is a simple minor progression but it is fun to jam over and, as you say, it did suit the sentiment of the song. You are putting out some great work from your back catalogue at the moment. Keep them coming. Take care, Peter.

70s singer songwriter nirvana! The guitars are rich, full, and expertly played. The vocal is excellent. I love the double tracking and harmonies. Nice guitar solo. I like your phrasing, tone, and the way the notes on the unwound strings pop! Deeply personal lyrics! Thanks for sharing! Downloaded!

I hope things are getting better for you!!!! Aren't good friends and family the best? I love the 'America' feel of the 'A moment of quiet, I stare at the ceiling, calmer equilibrium, Feelings well, I hold back the tears, knowing that better things will come' passages. GREAT solos. Major7ths...
Thanks for dropping by for a listen '89. Yeah, the America vibe is probably due to the major 7th chords in the bridge in addition to the double tracked vocal. They used them a lot. Glad you liked the song and thanks for the support re my health. Happy to have a look at a collaboration any time. Just email me and we will see how it pans out. Take care, Peter

Peter,
I doubt anyone is ever satisfied with a performance. You have to be proud that you wrote, played and sang a song from your heart and put everything you had into it. Yes, it is emotional and appropriately so. I really responded to your phrasing and honesty. Continue to heal and regain strength. Thanks.

My '82 Maton :-)
Hi Yves. Thank you for the vocal kudos. Things are slowly getting back to normal. The guitar tracks were all done with my '82 Maton acoustic (http://www.maton.com.au/acoustics/cw80-series.html). The left track was just chord strumming. The middle track was finger picking. And the right track was hybrid strum/picking with a capo on the 7th fret. The lead breaks were just run up the middle as well. The Maton has such a sweet sound, especially when doing lead work. Glad you enjoyed this one. Thanks for your support. Take care, Peter.

Equilibrium
Nice job at capturing emotional insecurities that can suddenly strike one down.

Without knowing the backstory, from the lyrics we can only guess at the cause of the crisis. Was it love? Did a job get lost? Was there a physical or mental breakdown? But I guess that really doesn't matter, because there is a universality to the lyrics that can relate to a wide variety of misfortune or misery.

The third verse caught me by surprise - I really didn't expect a recovery. But happy endings are always a welcome thing! Still - a pall hangs over the room. If it happened once, couldn't it happen again? Maintaining equilibrium is never an easy thing.

Get well soon
Hi Peter, I always love multiple acoustics and I think I hear at least 3 on this - all fitting well together and providing a lush bed for the vocal. The harmony on th evocal is another highlight for me. I'm just sorrow you had to go through illness to produce such a great song.
All the best

It sort of wavers a bit at times, but still sounds good and, as I think people have already remarked, it seems fitting. The layering and placement of guitars in the stereo spectrum is something I really like as well. Great playing too. Nice work. I hope things continue to get better for you.
