Description
This is another demo cassette I salvaged from the waters of Katrina. As with the others, there may be a little crackle and hiss but hope I cleared most of it up with Garageband and sound soap. I wrote this in the 70's after reading of Senator John Stennis (Mississippi) being mugged walking home from the hollowed hall of Congress. As you will hear the second verse is a little, to say the least, dated, but over-all I think it holds as much relevance now, as it did when I wrote it. I recorded this tape in 1993, Myself on guitar and vocals, the great Dave Easley on steel guitar.

Lyrics
Darkness falling over the city, got to hurry home
Shadows are waiting going to take you and beat you with guns
They'll take your purse, your golden watch and chain
An't it a shame when you can't walk the streets alone, just to go home, John

Edith and Joe it was nice of you to have us over
But it's getting late, we've got to go hide under the covers
Cause you know how this neighborhood is, you never can tell who might look
ninety percent of the time we keep our phones off the hook

Come on Billy let's go down and ply some ball
Sorry little brother got to go meet Jeff down the hall
We'll do the crack, then we can fly away
Playing ball is for kids I'll show you where it's at some day

I said Lord an't it a shame
God, don't you know it's even more strange
How the whole wide world can turn its head around
Aand the whole Damned place seems to be HELLBOUND

Interesting
and different.

The wailing, soulful steel guitar gives this blues lyric a strangely wistful quality, almost Pink Floyd, perhaps, though the vocal is obviously a lot more raw and deep. In the instrumental section there is even a hint of Eastern or Indian ambience to my ear.

Good. Enjoyed it. Glad that the waters didn't get it.

This is so cool. Love the steel--sounds like a fiddle in places, then again like a chinese pipa. Effective finger picking arrangement and soulful vocal. That steel is off the hook! Very cool original track.

Dark Americana. But if we're slowly traipsing along the the road to hell we might as well enjoy the ride. Strong images in the lyric and the vocals have a lot of character. Tight picking, and the steel guitar sounds like a fiddle.

Plaintive
You have something to say and say it powerfully. THe steel guitar has a middle eastern feel to it at times, and certainly adds to the "wail" of the song. Worth re-recording with the modern digital gear! Much enjoyed.
