A Lucky Man

Description
This song takes me back to my milieu, 70s folk, singer/songwriter music. It is also my first real “protest” song.

I started off writing about how lucky I am to live in, what is often referred to as, the Lucky Country, Australia. Many, many people are well off and live in comfort, although sections of the population, especially the indigenous population, would successfully argue against such a statement.

But then my introspectivity took over and I reflected on the current situation in Australia where both sides of politics seem to be trying to outdo each other in their endeavour to appear to be the “stronger” on border protection by dehumanising, and incarcerating for long periods, the small number of “boat people” who “illegally” sail to our shores in very dangerous circumstances to try and establish a new life for their families. They are fleeing oppression and conflict in countries such as Afghanistan and Iran but end up in isolated detention centres for upwards of two years, children included.

The incidences of self-harm and suicide amongst these detainees is very high as they struggle to cope with the length of their detention and their indeterminate status.

It is a national disgrace.

I tried to keep it folk club in style and deliberately kept it fairly simple.

Hope you can find something to like in it.

All comments welcome.

Regards,

Peter

Lyrics
A Lucky Man (Peter Bowen – 2011)

The hands of fate have been gentle of late
As they carry my heart through this life
Somehow the weeks have resolved into years
And allowed me to glide through the strife
A fortunate man, with a vague, half-formed plan
I kept my eyes to the sky
Oh, what a lucky man, am I

I’ve comforts a plenty, a wonderful family
And more than enough of what’s good
I live in a country that’s stable and wealthy
How come I have more than I should?
There’s many less well off, who struggle for freedom
And can’t find the means to survive
Still, I’m a lucky man, I cried

My family and friends and some sense of what’s fair
Have kept me from going awry
Oh, what a lucky man
I live in a lucky land
Too right, I’m a lucky man, am I

Lead over verse

I’ve been privileged to access a fine education
And honored to go on and teach
Working with kids as they rush to adulthood
Reminding them, all’s in their reach
In the land from down under
With all of its wonder
I hope they inspire and assure
And give thanks, cause they’re lucky, that’s for sure

Meanwhile in countries, not too far distant
Some don’t have the right to a vote
Lands of oppression, where guns are the law
They’re compelled to take flight in old boats
Seeking to better the lot of their families
They sail dangerous miles, ‘cross the sea
To live, in a lucky land, like me

But our politicians, continue to pander
To those who just see black and white
To them, it’s their lucky land
They’ve sole right to the lucky land
And they won’t share the lucky land, not tonight

Still there’re many who’d welcome these seekers of freedom
Their own fortune quick to recall
Cause we live in a lucky land
And it’s time that we take a stand
There’s plenty in the lucky land, for all

Maaaan......what a........
Great song well written done in a top shelf 70's style, but a song of
truth, honour and understanding, something we have very little of today...
We want them to do our work for us but yet they are invisible to most
their problems are not our problems.....
We've learned nothing from history, everyone was a boat person at one
point in time, and your country was nothing more then a gail house.....
They forget how they got there and why they got there.....

Very good song, very well done......Very well Played

Lucky Man
Strong lyrics - very well constructed song. The way the last line of each verse links the verses is powerful. The guitars work really well. The harmonies are close - bit of time spent there? NIce tone to the new guitar, an excellent sustain on it. The voice seems to be back in form after the op. had a bit of an effect on it? Impressive work, my friend!

A bit different...
Hi Philip. Thanks for the kind words. There are quite a few things about this song that are a bit different to what I usually produce. It is in 6/8 and a major key. I more often than not drift to a 4/4 minor key as the default. I also deliberately set out to have some repeated lines to link the story together. It is aslo fun to sing them. The vocals had some EQ tweaking but no real effects other than some slight reverb and echo. Glad you found it OK. Talk soon, Peter.

yes it is a sad thing you sing about Pete.
But I suppose it is a fact of all civilized (or uncivilized). Nicely done and story well told! Thanks for sharing my friend!

"Boat people"
Thanks, Freddy. Yes, most countries developed when "boat people" took over from the indigenous peoples. This is, indeed, a fact of life. Pity we can't be a bit more open to helping others in difficulty. Glad you enjoyed it. Take care, Peter.

Love this style of music. Like your opening lead and the the two acoustics compliment each other nicely throughout the tune. Great vocals and harmonies. Catchy chorus ... you are a lucky man because you can express yourself musically. Well crafted song Peter. Very refreshing!

Very Nice Peter
Lyrically and musically. We don't get to hear many literate protest songs (or singers) any more. Well done.

Unfortunately, we have a similar refugee detention problem here in Canada but apparently there are brokers who charge huge sums of money to get these "refugees" into the country.

Grappling with a refugee issue...
Thanks, Richard. Yes, I think many countries are grappling with a refugee issue. No wonder when the gap between rich and poor countries gets wider by the year. Glad you thought it was vaguely literate. Take care, Peter.

Very clever in
concept and delivery of the 70's style.I mean that was the era of the original protest songs.

It is a difficult subject to get your head round....there are varied and wildly fluctuating levels of opinion ,for example some people, especially those in the smaller european countries look at Australians' stance with a certain approbation and approval. I suppose it all depends on a point of view.... and how much land you still have spare............... 80)

But your point is well made and delightfully sung and performed, and I kind of get a feeling that Oz is still big enough to take some filling ....even if you do mostly live round the edge of it........and correct me if I got that wrong....I got that from Bill Bryson's book about Australia......Goiod song .Enjoyed.

Cheers

The real issue for me is...
Hi Chris. Thanks for the thoughtful comments. Australia does have plenty of space and plenty of country towns that would welcome an influx of people. The thing that concerns me most is the way we treat these people who arrive by boat. Yes, they arrive illegally, as many refugees in many countries do, and yes they need to be checked and vetted, but it is the manner in which they are detained that is the most disturbing thing for me. The isolation, hardship and length of their detention is the real issue for me. We can and should be more humane about it. Glad you enjoyed my protest song :-) Take care, Peter/

oh, what a lucky man...
cannot escape the heart-tugging reference to an earlier (ELP) lucky man... however this does stand on its own as a beautifully written song and melody, and important and strong lyrics and message... and very nicely played and sung... what more could you ask for? Maybe that more people could see the world the way you do. :-)

ELPB?
Hi Drak. That's the second ELP reference I've had in one of my songs. Funnily enough, I haven't ever really listen to their work much at all. Perhaps I am the lost fourth band member... Glad you liked the song and its message. I know many countries are grappling with similar issues but I would like to think they would all respond in as humane a way as possible. Take care, Peter.

What's happening Peter?
I hear your culture very clearly. Ireland comes to mind. Takes me back to Michigan during the time when we were so socially conscious. I would love our young people to get in your groove and realize that life and happiness are dependent on how much joy and appreciation you have for your life and the life of others. Inspirational is what you are.

Very nice tune - I particularly liked the words and the harmony parts, but overall, a really confident performance and production. Your picking is very accurate and works well with the song.
I wonder if we'll ever get some politicians who are willing/brave enough to go for the highest common denominator rather then pander to the lowest - not only regarding immigration of course. We seem to have lost our national conscience.
Great song!

Despairing...
Hi Neil. Thanks for finding the time to have a listen to the song. Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, I am a bit despairing at the moment of the state of both sides of politics. They both seem totally driven by what will get them re-elected... but hopefully the Carbon Tax will have a positive, long-term impact on the environment (and the country). Perhaps there is some hope for us yet. Talk soon, Peter.

You do protest just enough
I think you hit the folkie nail on its head here, as well as recall ELP's song (the real subject of which escapes me). Tight harmonies and lead guitar also bring early Fairport to mind.
The Hound is right. We learn nothing from history. I think it's a choice, based on a false sense of our own specialness. But music can make a difference, so protest songs are important.
