Starsong Lullaby-Richard13/ic42 (mj space race 2011)

Description
Cradled gently in the vast nursery of space, watching the blue future drift gently into the red past, it is sometimes best to relax, bask in the now, and dream.

ic42 note:
The ic42 lab has been dark and quiet, as the immediate needs of family has left little time for music lately. Luckily, Richard13 came to the rescue, and generously offered me one of his 3 SpaceRace Challenge pieces, allowing me to significantly shorten the time to create an offering, and thus enter the challenge myself. I chose one at random, and what he sent me was a celestial lullaby of beauty. This required great care to add touches to, without destroying its gentle nature. I eventually chose to showcase his flute melody more by lowering the backing synth levels slightly, and then an ic42 star-bell-melody was sprinkled in the beginning, middle, and end. Finally, a gentle cosmic wind was added, lifting dreams to the milky way. My heartfelt thank-you to Richard for entrusting this beautiful star-child with me, and making several important critiques as I embellished and modified this into what you hear now. Dear audience, it is hoped that you enjoy our collaborative journey.

richard13 note:
The second of three pieces composed for the 2011 Space Race Challenge, this has one Analog Synth and doubled Piccolo Flute tracks; no loops.

This is the first piece in which I play the chords with my left hand and the notes with my right, though not both at the same time. C'mon, I'm still learning. I really envy those who can sit at a keyboard and make both hands and all ten fingers do totally different things, for more than a few bars. Anyway, I think its progress. The really nifty thing about this is that I was able to play the whole thing in C (the easiest chords) and then transpose it all to Eb minor (cause it sounded cool). Simplicity itself, and it pleases me greatly ;-)

http://hubblesite.org/gallery/album/entire/pr1999033d/web/

The graphic, depicting R136 in the Lesser Megellanic Cloud, is described by HubbleSite as the"largest stellar nursery in our local galactic neighbourhood", and seemed appropriate for a lullaby. I fancy, if I look closely enough, I can see Vic Diesel sitting cross-legged on a nearby asteroid serenading the newly-forming baby stars (though I'm sure he'd do it better). Warning: don't listen to this if you've just had a mug of hot cocoa ;-)

Great composition. EXCELLENT audio quality thru my speakers. Just a perfect balance thru all ranges. My sub even got to work a few times on this song.

spectral analysis
I am pleased that I washed a spectrum of sound across your woofers... I often feel I spend too much time twiddling EQ knobs on each track, trying to fit and fill the audio spaces. In this case, I did add some warmth and strength in the bottom end, to make the lullaby feel safe and strong. Balance is important, especially in the cradle. Thank you Brian.

sounds of the nursery
Richard's piece was achingly sparse, and I love that aspect of it. I tried to gently blow little sparkles of interest into it, without disturbing its pace. So very glad to hear that it passes the "Maurice-peace" test, thank you for listening, and for offering such a splendid piece of your own.

Dreamy
I have (as you might know) a weak spot for both space and sleep, so I can't do otherwise but to love this track.

I also like the fact that the flutes and synth work equally together here, none is more dominant than the other. Well done both of you!

hanging in the balance
sleep has lots of space for interesting brain activity... it is a fascinating subject, I can understand your "weak spot". And I'm pleased that we have chosen a musical idea that triggers your imagination, since your wonderful piece surely triggered mine. As I am a lover of classical music, "balance" is very important to me. Unfortunately, like you and Karen, I suffer from OCTD (obsessive-compulsive-tweak-disorder) and could have continued to change and re-balance tracks and synths for months on this, so a deadline is important too. :-)

Wouldn't have been the same without you
either the song or the challenge. Nice tinkly additions and that wind, that wind... (lol)
Glad you were able to find a little time for this Eduard and that life for you returns to some semblance of normal asap. I am still delighted to have been of some help.

catalyst of friendship
Very grateful for your generous offer and trust in my embellishments, and your helpful critiques. This became a synergy of sound, and now that you have helped me enter something in the race, I will take you up on that hot cocoa (with a splash of dragon-sauce) and sleep, perchance to dream of electric sheep.

ttfn,
Drakonis

(P.S. I am glad you are OK with the solar wind, I raised the faraday shield so it is more of a "breeze" now, but I still wanted it in :-)

Mug of cocoa in hand. (Not really.) This is perfect. I knew you were going to add tinkly things. I knew it would be gentle and soothing. Thanks, Richard and Eduard. I am sending it on to my son's new baby.

cuz i could
ic42 is all about tinkly things. things that go bonk in the night. however, this required a gentle touch, so I abandoned the big banging things and even the clinky celesta, and crossed the rhodes to get to the other vibe. This sounds nicer, and hopefully grand-baby will enjoy and reach for the stars. Perhaps that will be easy to do, since he's near Hollywood. :-)

I could see a teacher....
Using this to knock out a few bad kids, put this on and tell them to listen, put them right to sleep.....hahaha....just joking.....
But your project isn't, it's very nicely done hard to make space music have feel but you've done that in this.....

Peace.....

Zzzzz.... mmm? did you say something?
sometimes you need something other than a sugar-crash to lull children to sleep... :-)

Very glad this conveys emotion to you, as your music does to me... that is very hard to do, however, Richard's flute melody was very touching, and I tried to intertwine some just-as-touching bells. They play well together, unlike some of those bad kids who need a nap. :-)

Children's music?
A space lullaby? Whatever, it's very nice indeed. Lovely mix, I especially like the sweeps. I can actually see me using this in the classroom as a nice ambient calmer, when my kids are high on windy/rainy weather! Great collab you two.

unclassifiable
Quite the high compliment, from a master of ambient soundscapes... thank you for that. Richard's soundbed had the sweeping synths and the flute, and I only slightly lowered the synth level so as to add my own synths in a few places for added dynamics, and I followed his lead, so to speak, and chose similar sweeps for mine, to blend in, but enhance the bass warmth a bit. Thank you for stopping in... and I hope to hear something from you for this challenge, I'll try not to be impatient :-)

A classic
in space music. I just had to listen to this in the bus to work this morning, using the new MJPlayer on my iPhone of course, and was I blown away? Those last couple of miles to the subway was spent with a broad smile on my face and a beating heart that almost jumped out of my chest :-)

I could listen to this forever. It would be a must have on my music player were I to go on a space ship some day - with lots of time to "kill"... ;-)

The soundscape sweeps are awesome, of course, but might be found elsewhere too (not sure where but...), but the two melodies are to die for, and the mix is pretty flawless as far as I can judge. Well, I am out of superlatives, so I can only thank you for sharing. It will be played where I am around...

Take care,
Henke

what an effervescent comment, and I am very pleased to know that I was able to mask the "Harmony Assistant MIDI" mechanics with my organic sandpaper, polishing this to Henke-standards, which I do strive for... mission accomplished! However, only with an incredible amount of help from Richard.

Thank you for listening and commenting and transferring that broad smile to me too. And now, I await your entry.

For life, there must be death
A celebration of ending as much as beginning
Joy, sorrow on to infinity

For wonder and tranquility
Calming
Swirling
Melding the mind with the vastness of the universe
Bringing joy to all the children of the stars

Wonderful collaboration
Great work u2. Eduard I like this piece for its simplicity. The solo sounding wind instrument was expressive with a tinge of longing; maybe because of the minor chord, which I love that register.

I hope your family situation gets better, so we can hear more creations from you.

Carpe Diem
There is always a little longing in life, always a desire to do better, learn more. Otherwise there is no point.

It is funny that it always takes a lot of work to make a piece of music simple and elegant. To fight the "Kitchen Sink Syndrome". Karen and I go to KSAnon meetings to fight these desires in our music. :-)

Thank you so much for your intriguing piece, and listening to ours.

I hope to create more music soon too.

Children's stellar nursery music
Gentle and beautiful. It is sleep-inducing, but in the best possible way. Fortunately, I'm highly caffeinated. I was going to say that it's too serious for children's music, but after getting to the end, I see what you mean. Excellent work and collab.

never underestimate the beauty and interactive nature of the caffeine molecule. And I believe that some of the most serious and focused people on this earth, are children. May we all remain children at heart, seriously. Used by solar babysitters the universe over to get the wee stars to sleep
This is lovely how the piece slowly evolves, with the bed getting laid down and then the delicate star-bell is a gentle introduction to the flute. I like the contrast between tones and attacks of these two lead instruments. There is probably not a more relaxing 5 minutes I can imagine. You obviously handled this baby with 'kid' gloves and the results are anything but immature. Beautiful collab.

Thanks too for making it downloadable, guys.

funny you mention contrast
When I got this piece from Richard, it had this deliciously languid flute and synth bed, but it seemed to be practically longing for some "icy fortuitous" bells, and they nestled in nicely I think. I did lower RIchard's synth a bit and added some of my own lower-freq. ones in spots to add some dynamics and more "Rich"ness. As always, thank you for the detailed listen, very glad you enjoyed, helped at Mission Control, and offered your own gorgeous entry.

Well I suppose if your going to miss
one than this was the one to miss....because having been directed to it and then listening to it I realise what a narrow squeak I have had by finally not missing it...this is ...no bull by product or bovine doo doo my absolute favourite of the whole project...the power and majesty of the main synth juxtaposes superbly with the ringing tones of the bell pads ( I think that's what they are )like the canvas of the cosmos sprayed with the airbrush of stars and nebulae....it creates a sense of huge vastness and yet remains friendly and comforting.....and I don't do sensitive so you got to me !!......time for cocoa....

The mix was an issue for me, even though there were only several tracks... those synths each wash across the spectrum... so I am pleased you noticed the work in taming them a bit. Excellent work and (Richard) I feel for you with the one-hand piano - I do the same sometimes even with 3 tracks - Hard to get my brain to do two things at once! Have the same challenge with drum tracks. This is a great mix - the levels and mix of frequencies are excellent. Do you have good studio monitors or just a great ear?

just a single ear...
this was indeed a tricky mix. unfortunately I am still attempting to mix just with headphones (and then double-checking on the stereo and in the car before declaring it good enough.) someday I will have saved enough for some monitors, and a soundproof door to my studio.

at least you and Richard can play with one hand. I do not know how to play piano, so I had to write the melody with both hands behind my back. :-)

So glad you could listen to this collaboration... I too think that Richard's music here is just stellar.
