Souvenir of Space (mj space race 2011)

Description
I thought I had a neat piece going for the SRC a couple of weeks ago, based on an improv on the keyboard with the two synth pads still used in this version, but in spite of the good start, it never really kicked off. Especially when I started to listen to all the great entries for this year's challenge I was rather "worried".

What happened instead was that I got GB for iPhone and while commuting to work I put 8 bars together that I couldn't stop listening to. The more I listened the more I craved for it. Addictive. That's what you'll hear at the very end of this song.

But what to make of the SRC entry? I am not sure how the idea struck me, to make a radio searching sequence, much like the one Jean Michel Jarre uses on e.g. the album Souvenir of China, but it stuck. And then some elements followed naturally, most notably the camera shutter and the title. The rest of the story I leave to you for the moment, can you tell the story?

I have many people to thank for this one, and hopefully none to apologize to. I have used a few seconds from 7 entries of this challenge, shamefully without checking the exact conditions for each song. If you don't like just tell me, and I will take the song down immediately of course.

I will give you the chance to find out if you're in first, but may tell more in the comments if need be...

Also I want to thank Ian Baird for sharing some great drum loops and samples of which I have used a couple in the starting sequence.

Last I want to thank everyone who has participated in the challenge this far. You are TRULY amazing. I have downloaded them all and they will all played a lot in the future. A special thank you to Mission Control. Without you this voyage would never have been entered upon...

Someone went into space and got me this great souvenir
This is fab Henke, MJ in meta space (um...), anyways a darn cool and clever idea.

Great atmosphere and sounds in here! Honored to be represented in it too :)

You should make something later on with those last 8 bars!

Big thanks
Glad you approved of the idea and thanks for your own contribution to it.

I will post that little ditty as a separate song in a while, it's not very long, but you can't stop listening to it. Repeat one is your friend ;-)

Thanks again, and take care,

Henke

Thank you
Great entry Henke. Enjoyed the concept very much. Some of it reminded me of the movie contact where the further you traveled the past becomes the present represented by radio transmission. Great feeling of time here in this piece.

The camera shutter snaps were a nice addition to capture the awesome spectacle of our heavens beyond. Well done.

Thanks
I had to look up that title, but yes of course, I saw it on TV some time ago. A great movie from a book by a great scientist (Sagan). At times I DID have some kind of wormhole idea for the piece but it didn't quite turn out that way as far as I'm concerned.

Glad you liked. Take care,

Henke

Fun idea
Fun entry, and very "green": using a little extraneous energy from other entries to achieve your own escape velocity. Very clever ;-)

Over the top?
I do feel a little bad about it. OK? Also I made you all want to hear my next piece, a short but addictive little thing. Oh my, where am I going...

Anyway, glad you liked it. You had some great entries yourself, thanks for those.

Take care,
Henke

love the build!
The build....then the switch to something more sinister and foreboding. The camera clicks throughout never let you forget that there's something 'outsiderish' going on here. A spectator; does he ever get to participate? I love that you sampled all the other songs. Nice work.

Interesting view
My thought was more of a space tourist taking pictures like the one in the song art from the space ship, but maybe it is Jarvoids space man taking pictures on the oncoming ship, trying to get attention for a rescue ;-)

Glad and relieved that you approved of the sampling. I first tried to insert some white noise between the samples but then I thought there must be some cleverer way to listen to radio in the space age and entered the cash register short version and I think that worked better even if it is not instantly quite as radio-like perhaps.

Thanks and take care,
Henke

Yeah
That was my idea as well, not very imaginative perhaps, but it went well with the Souvenir of - theme.

Thanks for listening and commenting.

searching the stars for stations
a unique angle of attack on the spacerace, allowing you to achieve apogee with aplomb.

At 1:08, the 2 washing chords remind me of Enigma... lovely.

This is the epitome of the challenge, offering people the chance to think and create "outside the box" of earth.

Very well done, well paced, and nice to see that you avoided using a sample of your own piece, which would have caused a perpetually recursive singularity that would have engulfed my headphones and everything between. Perfectly tasteful mix and bold idea. Thank you for choosing a bit of richard's/my lullaby, I am honored. And so glad to see you out here.

ttfn,
Drakonis

Oh dear
You really test my language knowledge here, luckily I have found the built in dictionary in Safari ;-)

Really you are too kind...

The washing chords are really just a couple of loops put together but with the software instruments tweaked. I thought I would go back to manipulate them to get a bit of interest, but then I thought they did well as depicting some kind of awe striking view when emerging out of the earthly spheres.

Actually I did use a sample of my own, even if it's not posted yet. It's ALMOST as addictive as the Grapefruit song - well, I said almost...

I wonder if it wasn't your piece that gave me the idea of doing this sample thing. I am quite addictive to that one as well.

Well, many thanks for making this challenge happen. I did grow an ulcer in the making and was down all last Saturday with migraine, but it was worth it ;-)

Take care,
Henke

Really really cool Henrik. I got my couple of seconds and I'm honoured you have sampled it! What a great idea.

Top mix and a splendid addition to my new playlist, thanks.

Thank you
I really was a bit worried how you would take it, since your rather few seconds doesn't come forward very well in the mix, and in spite of your "companion" being nice (not sure everyone hears it even?)...

So I'm really glad you approve and like the piece as well.

Also I'm happy you managed to get a piece together. Not easy when you have too much other stuff on your mind.

Anyway, hasn't this been a great challenge all in all? Some really great stuff with a lot of variation.

Thanks again and take care,
Henke

Hehe
Glad you mention the "airy" sound in the back. Not sure if I'm thinking of the same sound actually, but the low rumbling sound in the back is actually a looped erupting volcano;-) That was the closest thing to "hyper drive" I could think of in a rush... Maybe I should have tried to get something similar out of the Crystal synth instead... Nice imagery you conjured, I always like to hear what kind of pictures people see/hear in my music.

I much enjoyed your own entry as well, truly amazing...

Good to hear that it works for someone who isn't in the challenge himself (yet?)

Listening to the Flying Carpet now, maybe you could have made that an exotic entry in the SRC, or is it set too close to earth..? No, there must be planets elsewhere in the universe where they enjoy a good Narad tune :-)

Thanks for your nice comment. Take care,

Henke

Souvenir
What a clever idea. Very pleased that you put in an SRC tune --- wouldn't have been complete without you. There are a couple of others that are missed, but all in all, I think there have been some excellent entires, this one included. This will make an excellent souvenir in my iTunes Ambient collection. Thanks for including me. A distinct honor.

I would
have liked to have them all aboard, of course, but maybe that would have been pushing it too far. I'm really happy you approved of the idea and everything. It is the only challenge I really want to participate in, so I am also happy I managed it eventually. Special thanks to you for "letting me" include your stuff in mine.

It has really been a great challenge this year (too), even if I also can think of one or two that are missing so far. But the musical scope and creativity seem to have no boundaries...

BTW, listening again to your second offering and the voice reminds me of Doug's piece Desiree from last time (2009). Sounds great :-)

Thanks again and take care,
Henke

I can use something calm and soothing after this fairly hectic challenge. So many great entries in various genres. I guess your own was the most spaced out of all ;-) Anyway, glad you could hear a bit of "space" in this too.

Very cool idea. Now this is a slideshow I would never get board of.

Well stitched together, and with lots of interest coming from your synths that rise and fall like waves. The beats give it a totally different energy to the swirling spacey genre and make it a space based travelog. Nicely done!!

Cheers, and thanks for the dload.

Have you heard
any of Jarre's "versions" where he is trying various channels on the radio and eventually finds his own, Oxygen IV? I think it's used on more than one of his touring albums (China for sure, but maybe Houston as well?). Once I thought of that song, most of the pieces fell into place and I just had to do it.

I really have nothing against a proper t-shirt, even if it is a souvenir, but I suppose I have to agree that a picture show you've made yourself while on a space trip would be rather awesome :-)

Thanks for listening and commenting. And take care,

I was checkin that GB app out and wasn't sure how well it would work. I now fear that if I downloaded it, I would never get any work done.

A special souvenir indeed. This is lovely Henke! Awesome sound effects to boot.

I sat in bed the other morning jamming on the little time thief and almost missed my appointment, so yes, it might be a bit risky - but also a lot of fun. Did I mention the smart drums? Really fun interface for that one. Even I might throw something worthwhile together on such a drum machine :-)

Thanks again for listening and commenting.
