Description
Who was Jean Charles de Menezes?

The following was written by one of Jean’s cousins who lived with him in Tulse Hill, London at the time of his death.

In memory of my favourite cousin Jean Charles de Menezes

“To describe about Jean it is necessary to go back in time to when he was a child. Jean was born in the interior of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. He grew up in the small countryside village of Gonzaga and his parents were simple labourers with a small bit of land they would farm. From when he was a child, his creativity and intelligence were clear. I remember when he once put together all his toys and made a toy radio. He got a small box and designed some toy buttons and a control panel that would look like a real radio, and then he put a hole in the top of the box and put two small little pieces of wood in it to act as an antenna. Afterwards he caught a beetle and put it inside the box, the poor animal made noises inside the box as its prisoner and Jean said that it was his radio! When my father saw this he gave him his first real radio.
Jean promptly dismantled that radio to see what was inside. He was always very interested in electricity and when he was young he would try and put together electrical currents. In the old days they did not have electricity on the farm where he grew up so he put together light with the currents and batteries that he got in exchange of small services that he did for some neighbours. He liked the work of electricians and that later became his profession and his life.

Jean also liked music and to dance. It was always very eclectic; Brazilian music of course but also all of the kinds music including a lot of American and English music like Elton John and George Michael. But he didn’t like rock music! He liked modern music but he preferred the classical roots of music. He liked parties and was always in the company of friends. Surprisingly for a Brazilian, he didn’t like football! And he also didn’t like big cities having grown up in the countryside.

Jean was a very sensitive person who respected everybody and was loved by all his immediate family and well as his extended family like his cousins and uncles and aunts. He had many friends and loved to take care of me and Vivian, his cousins who lived with him, (he didn’t have any sisters but treated us like we were his sisters). He was very protective and he would not let anyone say or do anything bad towards his family.

Jean left of home at the age of 14 to go to Belo Horizonte to study and then to Sao Paulo to continue his studies and work. Finally he came to London in 2002. He had wanted to go to the USA but only got a visa for London so he came here. In the months before he died, he was thinking quite a lot about the future. He was concerned about his future, he wanted to marry and start a family, have sons and go back to Brazil so he could be closer to his parents. He had plans to have his own farm and work there.
He was the cousin that I loved the most. I used to say it was not just a simple cousin I lost but a best friend, a brother. He was part of me.

The dreams of my cousin finished a year ago inside Stockwell metro station. Jean was murdered by the British Police as a terrorist suspect in July 2005. He was 27 years old. He would never have done any evil to anyone”

Lyrics
Another murder in London town, shots ring out on the underground
And the people that did it are back at work, yeah that's the way British justice works
One year after he was killed Crown Prosecution Service will reveal that
None of the officers that killed your child will ever have to stand trial…
And that's just the way it is my dear, that's just the way it is
Its just the way it is my dear, that's just the way it bloody is

22 07 05 Jean Charles De Menezes dies
Officer Sir Ian Blair suddenly will declare
to suspend an independent police investigation,

Murdered by dum dums, they’re against the law yet nothings done
Suddenly no CCTV all a bit.. of
a mystery and a second IPCC investigation
When they pushed him down they held him to the ground
then they shot him 8 times…….. with 7 in the head

Cover up because its getting cold, cover up and you’ve been told to
cover up but the truth’s out there cover up police don’t care,

Cover up …….why did they follow him up the road?
Cover up……. let him on a bus to go?
Cover up……. let him off at Brixton Tube?
Cover up……. the police didn’t have a clue

Cover up……. let him take a second bus?
Cover up……. he got to Stockwell without a fuss?
Cover up …….and then they followed him down below
Cover up……. and they blew his head off as the tube was about to roll

Fired seven to his head they made sure he was pretty dead and its
Sorry we killed your child, our mistake but they’ll be no trial and its
Wrong time, wrong bloody place, we’re sorry about that dear, that's our mistake
Had him by the arms, yeah that boy from Brazil, he was unarmed

I recoil
in horror at the memory and thoughts of went on, in and around this case and it choked me every time it was on TV (I was in London at the time). There really does need to be justice served. The family were truly serene throughout and much more reserved than I could ever have been in these circumstances. My heart goes out to them, M

OK ... pretty sad and heavy ... beautiful simple crisp and clean acoustic riff / progression at the start that draws you in then it all kicks in ... drums are kickin and so are the vocals ... like the cello with the guitar picking. Well constructed tune excellent performance and production!

Powerful song...You can tell there's something heavy going on even without the lyrics....Well constructed and crafted.

An appalling event that I remember at the time and Patricia's account brought tears to my eyes. This song is well crafted and produced.

Great sound, great vocals. Epic lyrics. Love the different sections, chapters, the different rhythm beds. Wonderful tribute. Stirring.

The pickup notes in the drum track sound off at :43, in my ears, and again in the final recapitulation. At times it got a little wordy, in lines like the "IPCC" one, but the essence of the story suspends that kind of criticism. The "Cover up section" drives and works really well. The song has such a strong downbeat in the first section, it was jarring to me right there.

Fab section just before the ending recapitulation. Really nice feel, a sense of living on, carrying on, keeping alive.

Man, life can suck.

LOL
Wordy is Mr. C's middle name. It's his trademark... LOL I've been kidding him about that. He'll make something that should be 3 syllables one word.... LOL But it seems to work.

At last
A tribute to Jean. Murdered by the police, ah but it's ok he was wearing a ruck sack and looked like a terrorist, shocking. I wonder if this is not influenced in the music by The Levellers. A very fitting tribute to this sick event and thank you for it.

Powerful
This fits into a long tradition of music being able to tell people's stories. When it gets going it has a bit of Dylan's "Hurricane" in it (although in this case, there is no controversy about the innocence of the person). It was a shocking story at the time. Gritty lyrics, as they have to be given the subject matter. Strong vocal. The instrumentation is exceptional - that clean acoustic is outstanding. Billy's contributions give richness and colour. And if Fred's involved, you know that the mix and master will be just right. Congratulations to all involved!

I remember
this awful story well Fred. You've done real justice to the story with the beautiful production and incisive lyrics you have here. I like everything about the playing/singing, and the mix is superb.
What a terribly sad indictment of modern times!

Had to come over for another listen, yes I had heard about this case of course. This is what I call making good use of music. Police cover ups are nothing new - The Bently case and the Timothy Evans case both are examples of sub standard police work. Such a lot of thought has gone into this piece and I am well impressed. The music itself is superb. I mentioned the Derek Bently case and am reminded of Elvis Costello's song about that one as well.
