Description
Here's the latest from my duo, Downer Cow. On this track I used the trial version of Ozone 5 Advanced (it's actually the full version, and they give it to you for 10 days!), and overall I'm impressed with the results. There is definitely a learning curve (which is reflected in this track), but with more time I feel I can improve my sound dramatically. Unfortunately, the price tag is rather hefty, so I'll be saving my pennies for awhile.

As for the song itself, we again stick to our unique brand of understated melancholia. In real life we are upbeat and positive, but we both enjoy indulging in the theatre of depression and sorrow when writing music. I guess it's a sort of therapy, really.

Anyhow, hope you enjoy this, but please don't take it all too seriously.

I like
the sound you're getting. It also has a European vibe mainly because of the vocals. Thanks.

Fabulous mix
Crystal clear, bass booming through beautifully. I'm hearing Grace Jones maybe? I love all the little arps you've got going in this. Really nice and very pro sounding too. I've taken a copy, thanks.

Thanks
I never made the Grace Jones connection before, but now it seems obvious! Glad you liked the arps (ear candy, I call it). Designing those is always the most fun for me; I just love twisting knobs and hearing what happens.

Cheers

Mastering
This sounds very nice. You haven't squashed the dynamics to death and there's a lot of contrast between sounds.

If Ozone is too expensive, why not explore the tools in Logic? You have a multiband compressor, linear phase EQ, several great reverbs.... It'll be a while before you run into their limitations.

Thanks
I appreciate your comments. You are absolutely correct, I have a long way to go to master the tools in Logic. In fact, I'm confident I could achieve similar results with Logic, but to me it's more difficult and time consuming than Ozone was to use. It's funny that I'm even complaining considering the drivel I was putting out in GB. Cheers!

Pink Wave Floyd?
This is wild... the melody and harmonies have this "Animals" feel, but with sparkly trance-like arpeggios. Nuclear chicken's a great singer too. Love that stretch-echo at 4:21. The fade-out seemed a little naked, I was hankering for a little more taste of Chicken sprinkled here and there after 5:18? Crystal clear stuff, glad you figured out the mixdown problem, this is delicious!

Thanks
I'll let her know you enjoyed her performance. Truth be told, she had a horse accident halfway through tracking her vocals. She broke her neck, separated her shoulder, got a severe concussion, and bruised her ribs. She will be fine, but that accident killed our session.

Cheers

Very cool track. Excellent mix and master. Sounds very pro and polished to me. I like the snap the new sounds provide around 2:16.

Jason, this is real ear candy, really lit up my senses! Sonically, dynamically very well done...love the contrast of the understated vocals with the crystal synth sounds....really like it! Rok

Too bad
not only about the party being over but about the chicken's accident. Hope she's all right and you can get the party going again. Some really good sounds and rhythms going on.

The sounds chosen complement each other well, and everything stands out in the mix. Understated vocals work well for the vibe.

The Party's Over
Great song and sound. I use Ozone 4 and I like it very much. Easy to ruin a song with though. Great vox Chick! Impressive! This groove has that "The Party's Over" mood!

Fantastic mix!
I love the subtleties in the sound - neat panning and a real attention to detail. Extra clean/clear with lots of light and shade - tons of tidy punch from the bottom end. Ozone 3 works for me - too tight to upgrade, but I should really have a look at 5 I suppose. Fantastic vocal - just love the whole thing really.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Very nice
All this Ozone stuff is all very well but you have to have good source material in the first place and you have that in spades.

I suspect you'd make an old 4 track tape sound good.

Impressive work.

Holy cow Jason, this is absolutely terrific! I'm really pleased that Neil gave this a shout out in the forums or else I'm afraid I would have missed it. This is about as pro sounding as it comes to my ears.

I love how the synths floats together with the excellent vocals. Get Allison, Yazoo vibes, but this is different, and it's very good! /M

Chicken
Nuclear or fried, sounds delectable the vocals are so familiar yet they sound so mystical and strange, that thump you get in the bass really drives it home Ozone is doing its job!

Yup
is good as everyone says! I have ozone 5 but not the advanced version... just the standard ol stuff. The sound here is very clean and cool.

Nicely done!

It's fun to look around the corner of this song
By that I mean that it always has some surprise in the production around each corner. At one point is stops and hits the listener over the head. Next time it stops and slips a knife in your back.
Cool track.

Party
If there's any question about using Ozone 5 for a clean punchy mix, you can put that to rest.

The whole production is brilliant guys. A little Euro synth action to keep things lively - this one really shines. Vox is spot on, bass just the right amount of growl for this style.

Take a well earned bow, both of you.

Doug

Or has the party just begun?
Crisp and clear, the layering in this mix is textbook example material. Love that low driving synth/drum combo with the arpeggiated leads. NC has a great voice - she fills my head and makes the hair on the back on my neck stand up. Brilliant tune Jason. I hope your vocalist has made a full recovery by now from her fall.

Cheers,
Doug
