Description
This song started with the drum beat, then a chord pattern, then the line “Walking down the avenue” popped into my head. This led to thoughts about who might be doing that. The rest came from wherever ideas come from.

I would like to thank a few MJers for their input into this – even though they won’t realise they had any input :-) Reading comments on various songs led me to think about a few things. They were:

• thoddi - suggested I have a look at betamonkeymusic.com for some drum sounds. This track uses one available for free download from that site.
• Saltaireguru77 – asked about the slide guitar on one of my tracks, which got me thinking about pushing my use of that a little, from using it just to colour a piece, to trying a lead break.
• CrazeeFlootGrrl – mentioned that she used chorus and flanger effects (amongst others) on her vocals, so I tried that on the doot-do harmonies on this track.
• And to PeterB7858 for Ozoning the final version!

So thanks to those people and to all the others who comment on my songs - they do make me think!

Hope you enjoy the track!

Lyrics
Walking Down The Avenue

She’s walking down the avenue
People look her way
She’s walking down the avenue
With that Ipanema sway

Listless boys in cafes
Their eyes just take her in
But what they think they see in her
Is not where she has been

Everybody notices she’s
Full of grace and style
Everyone who looks at her
Is captured her smile

A young girl in the city
She hears her mother’s sighs
And dreams of being somewhere else
Where no-one has to cry

She got her ticket out of there
On catwalks and in shows
But her mind was filled with other things
Designing her own clothes

To Paris and to London
Then New York and LA
A simple dress and chunky jewels
And she was on her way

Now she’s on the A-list
At parties in this town
With all the ones who've never known
How life could push you down

But deep inside her there is steel
And so she always knows
When she’s walking down the avenue
Which way she wants to go

Walking down the avenue
Full of grace and style
Everyone who looks at her
Is captured by her smile (as she’s)

Walking down the avenue (fade)

Yes she is!
Just what I needed. Uplifting and interestingly composed. Joyful..hopeful and it reminds me of my youngest daughter who will representing her company this February at 'Fashion Week" in New York. This is her first time. And I am So very proud of her hard work and determination. Thank you for such a remarkable piece my friend it puts me in a good place as a father.

Had me from the first couple of bars...
Hi Philip. The first few bars had me. Loved the entry of the slide over the drums and your smooth vocals tell a refreshingly positive tale. I also like the strings when they make an entry and the doot-dos work well. One of your most confident postings (IMHO). Talk soon, Peter.

I was happy with that slide sound. The La Bella silk and steel strings I currently have on the Maton suit slide (a bit surprised by that - I've have thought brighter strings would be more suited). I must have a go on your Maton with the Elixir strings to see if there's a difference! Glad you like the bits that come in - I'm thinking a bit more about how to build a song. See you soon!

Avenue
This is tasty on a number of levels. Love the brushes on drums groove, slinky slide lead, simple but effective melody and singing. Backing tracks and production are all spot on. Some cool background singing, too. Has some of the appeal of a David Gray hit. Nicely done, Phillip.

Hi Franc
Thanks for the comment! I don't think Derek Trucks has to worry just yet, but my slide playing is getting a bit better. Practising for this song (which I recorded a little while ago) led to me trying some slide on "what's the colour of your eyes" where I think it turned out OK too. See you soon for the next project?

Walking down the avenue
Finally one of my random jabberings paid off! I'm so pleased that my comment got you thinking and helped contribute to such a nice piece of music. Touches of George Harrison about that slide playing to my ears, the sweet soaring sound. Really cool. Effortless vocals and just the right amount of note bending and almost conversational singing. Reminds me a little of some of the stuff Mark Knopfler does on "Sailing to Philadelphia", which I love. Hope to hear more! And thank you again for the mention Philip. Keep up this great music.

I always think there's room for one more guitar, KC, although that approach sometimes gets me into trouble! I understand what you're saying about care with the vocals. I thought it worked with the doot-do backing, but other than that I'd always try to think about why I was using it (other than "because I can"). Philip, I love this song and a great job on the mix. The slide is tasty and does add the right touch of color to this dreamy melody. Thumbs up on the drums ... the brushes are perfect for this acoustic arrangement. The strings sit nicely and add a comforting ambience to the tune. Along with your smooth vocals this is a sweet tune!

Hi Stan! THanks for the detailed feedback - I always appreciate your close listening. I often start with a drum beat (can't seem to work very well with the metronome in GB, need something more solid) and having one that had a bit of funkiness to it sort of set the tone for the rest. Thanks for the comments on the mix too - I recently bought a set of speakers that I think are helping, there (just used headphones before that). Take care! Philip.

From its origins as a drum beat - cool.
Nice song Philip. A tune with bounce, hopeful and confident. Bits of it remind me of my daughter who went to Sydney to study fashion design and business. Slide effect give it a little bit of country blues influence.

I guess Ozoning is from the verb "to Ozone". :) It's a good mastering tool, no?

Well sung, well played.

Doug

sorry I've been so slack in the commenting department lately. Just too much happening in the real world. This sounds very nice indeed, although the guitars and vocals get a bit swamped by the strings at times. Drums sound really good - interesting and clean. This has a terrific groove. Guitars sound very well recorded too.

Hi Neil
Yes, sometimes life takes precedence even over MacJams :-) I listened again to hear what you mean about the strings and the guitars. I think at the time I wanted that lush sound that the strings give, but that may not have been my best choice! I was pleased with the drums - the basic loop has an interesting kick to it and a few tom fills gave it a bit more depth, I thought. Thanks for listening and taking the time to comment!
