Once Upon a Time in the East

Description
It's time for a bit of rock'n'roll.

Another in the Queen Caroline cycle http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=1008252

This is the song of the guy who wants to be relocated. Dagenham is in the east (red on the map) and Hammersmith (home to the QC estate, 1 on the map) is in the west (sort of) and Romford is near Dagenham.

Guitar, bass and drums that, for once, I could have done on an 8 track.

Once Upon a Time in the East © Dick Langford 2012

Well we left our home in Dagenham and travelled way out west
I don't know why my parents moved I guess they thought it was for the best
I lost my room, I left my school and I missed all my friends
I said, that if I get the chance I'd move back east again

My Dad he gave my dog away as we moved into a flat
I cried myself to sleep at night and I can't forgive him that
My parents passed a while back and left me on my own
I might have been here 30 years still doesn't feel like home

What a school they sent me to, I hated it and how
I hated all the teachers there and that lollipop lady cow
She'd hit me with that lollipop if I didn't move along
I've still got the scars today and I'm glad to see her gone

I go to Romford most weekends and meet up with old mates
they ask me when I'm going back and I say I've got to wait
I've got no job, I'm on the dole, and the social pays the rent
I haven't told the council yet my mum and dad are dead

A Tory bloke come round last night and said that I should know
They'd pay for me to move away and did I want to go?
So goodbye to these old cold rooms, I'm glad to see the back of 'em
It's time for me to celebrate I'm going back to Dagenham

Moving can be a drag. Good to hear your hero has made it back where he belongs. Enjoyed very much!!

Thanks Bill!
In fact he's not a hero. He's a scrounging layabout. He's still claiming the benefits on his dead parents, has never worked and has does nothing for himself. I think that maybe you have to know Dagenham and Hammersmith to realise he's actually getting what he deserves!

Rock on bro!
Man, there is no end to your talent. Great lyrics tell the tale of disaffected youth, a totally different (for me) voice singing them, and straight-up rockabilly instruments and music, all delivered professionally (as usual) by Sir DWL. I am in awe.

This is great - rollicking rhythm and black humour lyrics... The bright lights of Romford, and the lollipop lady cow LOL!!

You know Romford then ? ;-)
I think it's one of those songs where it helps if you know the areas!

The Lollipop Lady was my one of my previous song posts so I appreciate you picking up on that and taking the time to listen to that song!

Thanks for the comments.

Once Upon a Time
classic!
rockin' and tight. great job dick you kept al lot of the old rockabilly elements while also giving it a updated sound. the eddie cochran guitar lead was wonderful. the bass and drums locked right in with each other plus a totally committed vocal

I say rockabilly
but I think I needed a stand up slap bass to do it properly.

Thanks Vic, it's difficult coming up with another solo isn't it? (probably why I don't too many these days)!

Go West
I dig this...the big, fat band sound and great rockin' guitar. Reminds of a Nick Lowe/Dave Edmunds rave up circa '78. Cool lyric and vocal performance. Quality track, Dick.

Funny you should mention that as I just realised I had been listening to Repeat When Necessary not long ago. I wonder if that had anything to do with how this developed.

I appreciate the comment and the comparison!

Much appreciated!

As I said to Bill and Philip he's not supposed to be a character that people like! Except for the bit about his dog he's a do-nothing sort of bloke who takes but doesn't give. I am coming round to thinking that it's not such a bad thing though if it entertains and draws people in!

Dagenham Dick
The pub rock revival starts here.
Touch of Dr, Feelgood to this rocking track.
Never been to Dagenham and my experience of Hammersmith is standing at the flyover trying to hitch hike out of London.
Happy day :-/

I was going to call it
Once Upon a Time in Dagenham but for some reason went for a more generic location!

Thanks mate! I thought Dr Feelgood as well although trying to get anywhere near Wilko's style is pretty much impossible for me.

My wife comes from Dagenham so I have a bit of history there and I can tell you that you didn't miss a thing. Hammersmith has its good points though ;-)

Thanks for the comments and I hope to see you as well as Bob in a couple of weeks.

Four minutes in the time machine
Rock 'n' Roll is alive and well in Dagenham today. Good one, Dick. I'd like to see you with this band (of DWL clones) at a little festival with Jerry Lee Lewis and a reunited Rockpile. If only we had a time machine.. right?

Yeah, a time machine would be nice
Nice to hear from you Bob. We must finish our song at some point....

Sorry to correct you but I'm not sure very much is alive in Dagenham these days! The Ford car plant shut down some time ago (but my "hero" hasn't realised yet) and we just heard last week the Coryton oil refinery has just gone into administration :-( (but I'd written the lines by then and didn't want to change them.

Take care Mr S. Hope things are good for you. Skype me sometime.

Love the Gene Vincent feel to this Dick!
Kinda dark theme for a happy bop rhjythm, but it works! Love the walking bass! Great vocals, cool rock gtrs, and special FX. About the only thing I would have liked to hear would be some piano. Honkytonk.... But really it didn't need that. Just something I would have tried! Really like this a lot! Great work!
DWL said 1972 days ago (January 31st, 2012)
Piano would have been great
I don't play though and I rushed this out without asking for a collab but I agree I think piano would have worked.

Rock'n'roll mystique
the only real mystique about Dagenham is how anyone knows where they are on the largest council estate in the world with every street looking the same! I've been lost there more than once....

If I can find a rhyme for Dagenham you must get one for Woolwich. I look forward to it!

Thanks for the listen and comments Steve and hope to see you next week.

Dick has left the building
Part of a new compilation on the theme of lollipop ladies? Terrific retro rocker Dick with a tight production, spot on reverb treatment for the vocal, and yet another contrast between the lightness of the tune and the more sober message. I like the well placed dubious references at the end: 'the Ford car park', Coryton refinery under the wail of the siren and smashing glass.

Keep making this kind of music and you will have to get a white sequinned suit for Vegas :)

Cheers!
Doug

Lost Legends of the Lollipop Ladies
Great idea Doug!

This is tied in to the Queen Caroline cycle and I'm trying to put some cross references in if I can to make it all a little more coherent.

They were very dubious references at the end. Look up Dagenham on Google Earth sometime then go down to street view. It was, and possibly still is, the largest council estate in the world. Basically a manufactured town. Soulless and with little history.

Thanks for the comments Doug, much appreciated!

Once upon a time
Dick, you have no idea how much I enjoyed this! I've certainly been to a gig or two in the Hammersmith Apollo and used to work with a bloke from Dagenham (he used to refer to the locals as "Dagenham donuts"). With work, I get to see the highlights of Bromley, Romford and Croydon quite a bit so I can colour all that in in my head quite well. This really made me laugh, especially the accent change towards the end - it slid gently from Beale street to Wetherspoons on Westmoreland Road in one easy stretch! Brilliant. Muscially, definite touches of Jerry Lee and Chuck, with a real swagger to that rhythm. In between the verses, I could almost hear female shoop shoop backing singers singing "Dagen..Dagen..Dagenham!" The peeler sirens and smashing glass was the icing on the cake (and made me somewhat homesick for Belfast, but that's another story). Excellent stuff!
Check out my latest song called Tomorrow
DWL said 1969 days ago (February 3rd, 2012)
Weird
I thought I answered this last night (and I hadn't even been drinking) and started the it by quoting Dagenham Donuts....

If you've seen the bright lights of Romford then you'll know how bad Dagenham must be if that's where the donuts go for pleasure.

Strangely enough the accent change wasn't deliberate. I think that perhaps my brain wouldn't let me sing "Tory bloke" in a cod-Elvis accent!

Female singers would have been splendid but, as I said in another post, I just wanted to get it finished and get on with the next song.

Dagenham is home to the largest public housing development in the world according to Wikipedia. A veritable town, manufactured and soulless.

I'm pleased you enjoyed it (even it did bring back Belfast). Thanks for the detailed comments!

Such generous comments Julian!
We didn't have school discos and I was working in the 70s so I don't have the same antipathy as you.

Meanwhile of course, it's great fun to play and make lots of noise.

However, given that I'm quite attached to my knee-caps I'll label my next rock'n'roll song as romantic pop.

The guy's a wanker btw. There is no reason to go back to Dagenham once you've left unless you're worried about the bodies buried in the garden (maybe that's it)
