Description
Alert! A brief intentional vinyl noise at the beginning.

Crazy isn't it? I was messing around with my ukulele and started playing a song that I had written and recorded back in 1989 with the help of William Moore (RIP). I recall that William and I were talking about how the homeless lived right down the block from the very wealthy. William had shot some footage as his girl friend drove around Turtle Creek (Neighborhood) and then the slums not too far away. He used the sound track we had laid down on a 4 track way back then, to play along with his movie.

Doesn't seem like much has changed....

I recorded this song to the ukulele so the key is deferent from the original. The progressions have changed and the player plays different from what he use to.

Thanks for taking the time and lending me your ears.

Lyrics
Everywhere I look around I sense some sympathy
People lost and never found living a tragedy

No where to run to no where to hide
Living it down outside
Can't believe my eyes and I'm turning my head
Feeling it deep inside...

Somewhere else you look around people living fancy and free
Promises have slapped them blind and it makes no sense to me

No where to run to no where to hide
Living it down outside
Can't believe my eyes and I'm turning my head
Keeping it deep inside...

I'm looking around and it makes no sense to me...

I just rediscovered my ukulele! I love your bluesy approach. It gives this track a very cool delta vibe to mix with the more contemporary elements. Great changes that make it wonderfully unique from a typical blues. Love the build up to a full on rocker. Cool lead guitar solo. Excellent mix!

wasn't sure
the genre... The vocal attempt I had in mind was from some songs the family use to do from the old folk music book we use to sing to way back when. After reading some comments I realized it was quite bluesy at first. The Folk-Rock genre seemed fitting when I posted. Thanks for your comments, it's always a pleasure to read the effects my music has on others.

I had a cheap ukulele sitting around the house that I never took serious since the 6th grade... I wasn't sure if buying a nicer one would spark the interest but it seemed to have open a whole new world to music experimentation, a back to basics way of looking at my music structure. Not only do the uke's sound like uke's but they somewhat emulate a mandolin quite well. I just play it in front of the mic when I can keep my dog from howling. Thanks for you nice comments as always you're there for encouragement.

Brilliant John
Wow, this was just terrific, I don't know where to start, either! I just got a uke about 3 weeks ago and I hope I can play it as well as you one day. This is a winner--a great combination of elements, from songwriting, vocal and music, all done with finesse. Thanks for sharing this!

I think a Uke would fit well with your style of music. While playing around with the instrument I ran into some chords that had a rag tag style. Looking forward to hearing the ukulele complimenting your music. Thanks for dropping by, always a pleasure to read your comments.

Fair bit
of Rhythm & Blues in this too... solid little number.. nice Quo-esque bass under pinning the schwinging Uke riff... love that el. guitar part the comes in around 02:00 (chorus) .. nice lift.

Perhaps some more vocal parts to beef up the chorus?? Tactfully, short and sweet solo (as I'd expect) but expected a return to the chorus arrangement wise post solo... which never came.

A final chorus after the lead would predictably fit, easy to do and you know I would be calling on you for those extra vocals. There were some other issues left for a follow up re-do, like a better thought out lead and the drum roll after the break needs tweaking. Probably should have farmed out. Thanks for your perception, always constructive and encouraging.

Cool song, especially dig the part that starts around 2.02. That uke works well
dig the bluesy vibe.
Man, I hear so many uke's nowadays, I'm considering buying one and see if I can get a grip on it

Really strong
Nice one, John. The uke works wonders and I like the blues-tinged arrangement. The distorted guitar sits comfortably in the mix and the outro is tasty indeed. Really strong post. Thanks, Peter.

Thanks for dropping by and commenting. The song was supposed to be reminiscent of a folk tune, the vocals an imitation of a musician that I heard once on a Tele Tubbies (S.P?) episode and the break was reaching for that 80's rock-n-roll vibe.

well

John, your vocals on this are just great! The Uke is such a cool turn on this, with the sweet driving bass line capped with the solos.

Really cool brother.

Cool song, the vibe reminds me of the Dead. I like the use of the uke, and the electric lead is sweet. Be a great song for an extended jam.

The uk sure adds an interesting vibe, doesn't it? Love how it opens up and begins to rock a bit. Having lived in Los Angeles for many years, the stark contrast of rich and poor seemed almost "natural" in a demented kind of way. Thanks for posting.
