Slip of the Tongue (w. hackneybloke, Loob & Philip18)

Description
This song is a bit different from some of my others in several respects. First off, I wrote a version of the lyrics before I had any melody or chords. Usually I work the other way round. Secondly, I wrote it using only the title line as a guide.

I have been listening recently to an iconic Australian singer/songwriter, Paul Kelly, and specific phrases in several of his songs jumped out at me as good ideas for songs of my own. This was such a song.

My previous MJ song, By Still Waters, was conceived and written the same way.

I have been trying to write songs that I can sing solo, acoustically, and I am confident that this will work in that environment, but happily it ended up as a collaboration for the MJ post.

I have been trying to write songs that I can sing solo, acoustically, and I am confident that this will work in that environment, but happily it ended up as a collaboration for the MJ post.

hackneybloke (Julian) made a comment on my last song about singing harmonies along with it as he was listening, so I thought to myself that this was too good an opportunity to pass up. I emailed him and he readily agreed to be involved, sight unseen. I have been a great admirer of his work and, especially, his creative use of harmony and backing vocals. And as you can hear from this, he didn’t disappoint. Thanks, mate.

I wanted the song to have some depth and coherence so I laid down a pseudo bass track of my own and sent it off to Philip18, Julian and Loob (I was already thinking drums…) for comment. Their response was kind but unanimous – get someone with a real bass guitar who knows what they are doing ☺. Philip kindly offered to audition a bass track and his first outing would have done Jaco Pastorius proud – multiple bass lines across the stereo spectrum with harmonics – the works…. I am eternally grateful that he accepted my return comments about the KISS principle with grace and good humour. His second offering was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks.

The song was now in a format that needed drums and, as many people do, I turned to Freddy for his expertise. I have had the privilege of working with him on several songs and, like the true mailman, he is, he delivered. Thanks, Freddy.

Julian, Freddy and Philip all had suggestions on how the song might be improved, and I even took some of them on board ☺. Thanks, guys.

Credits:
Julian: harmonies and backing vocals
Freddy: drums
Philip: bass
Me: songwriter, lead and harmony vocals, all guitars, midi organ, mix/master.

Anyway, for better or worse, here it is.

Peter ☺

Lyrics
A Slip of the Tongue – Peter Bowen (2012)

A [G] slip of the tongue
[Bm7] Half said in jest
A [C] casual remark
That I [D] should have repressed
Just me [G] playing the fool
Being a [Bm7] little too smart
[C] I should have known
That you’d [D] take it to heart

A [G] slip of the tongue
Too [Bm7] late to take back
The [C] look on your face
Stopped me [D] dead in my tracks
[G] I never meant to
[Bm7] Cause you such pain
What [C] was I thinking?
How [D] can I explain?

[G] Words can revive and a[D]stound you
Es[C]pecially the kind that [D] come from the heart
[G] Then they can hurt and con[D]found you
When [C] said without thought, they can [D]tear love apart

[Em7] Language can be so cap[D]ricious
When [C] heard at its best it can [G] gladden the soul
If use [Em7] is more injud[D]icious
It can [C] cut to the quick and [D] leave a great toll

Lead over chorus

A [G] slip of the tongue
I [Bm7] shouldn’t have said
A [C] stupid aside
Situ[D]ation misread
A [G] lesson hard learned
I hope to [Bm7] never relive
My [C] lack of discretion
I [D] beg you forgive

[G] Words can revive and a[D]stound you
Es[C]pecially the kind that [D] come from the heart
[G] Then they can hurt and con[D]found you
When [C] said without thought, they can [D] tear love apart

[G] But words can also say [D] sorry
And I [C] want you to know that these [D] come from my heart
[G] Don’t put an end to our [D] story
I’m [C] truly contrite, I [D] love you, let’s make a new [G] start [D] [C] [D]
Let’s make a new [G] start [D] [C] [D]
Let’s make a new [G] start

Lovely song Peter; melodic, sensible and well structured. Vocals sound rich and are place nicely in the mix. Julian adds his support with fine blending and perfectly placed parts. Freddy and Phillip also lay down a great foundation for this smart piece of music. Nice!

I really like this piece Pete!
Has a great hook and feel to it! Most enjoyable guitar work. Phil's bass was easy to grab a hold of and put the pocket into. Julian does a great job with the backing. A bit of a ham but great none the less! LOL Hi J! :-P Moxed and performed well. Love the lyrical writing! Thanks for having me in on this one Pete. Love it!

Just a little J.
Pete said it was exactly what he wanted so that's what matters. It's the performmer in you... Take the ball and run with it. Da man down under was happy with it and so you done good. It was just a sort of tongue in cheek comment... You are used to having the spotlight... Can be hard to do a support role sometimes when you are Julian Simms... It really is well done J! Glad you are a good sport...

Hold the mayo...
Thanks, Freddy. Glad you liked this song and equally pleased you were able to help out with it. I always enjoy working with you. Julian has a far more creative and inventive take on harmonies and backing vocals that I ever will so I was more than happy to go with what he put forward. That, and I know that, as a colonial, I have to prostrate myself before the mother country every now and again. God save Tim Jones! :-) Talk soon, Peter.

the art work made me laugh.....it makes you think it's going to be some saucy knees-up tune plink plink on the piano guvnor.....when in fact the song turns out to be miles away from that.

Peter your voice sounds remarkably like Julian's in this tune - at first I thought that was Julian singing the lead. Guitar work is beautiful on this. Your collab partners really came together to make a great sounding tune - congrats - and enjoyed!

Some advice
Thanks, Stan. Glad you liked the opening. Julian gave me some advice that pointed me in that direction. I do find the song a good one to sing, and, I agree, Julian fits very nicely into the mix. Freddy and Philip gave the song the solidity and coherence that the arrangement needed. We appreciate your kind words. Take care, Peter.

Congratulations, Peter - you've done a great job with the song and getting it all together. Julian's adventurous harmonies fit what you're doing perfectly, and Freddy's drums are always tasteful. Not sure about the last "S" on the "KISS" principle for the bass, but I'm glad I could eventually get there with what you wanted :-) See you soon!

And it's on! Vox is felt and the musical arrangement flows beautifully intertwined melodically with a fluidity of purpose. Lyrical gem that sticks positively to your ear. Yeah..Let's make a new start! Fine all around musicianship.

New start
Your chord progressions are lovely here Peter, as is your lead and guitar work. I like also how the harmony sometimes consciously departs from being in time (like at 1:20) - is that Julian? Bass and drum are spot on and suit this piece to a T. Your topic is so universal you resonate very well with my experience - a skilful use of your lyrics.

Great collab guys.

Thanks for the dload!!
Doug

PS - Appreciate you taking the time to put your chords into the lyrics. Very generous Peter.

Paul Kelly
I finished "How To Make Gravy" by PK last year and was sure I could use the experience to help me develop lyrical idea. I had nowhere near the success you show here. As you probably realise I've been "away" from MJ for a while, and in that time your production seems to have made a huge amount of progress. Terrific contributions from everyone - and particularly Julian on the harmony vocal.

slip o the tongue...
Great songs boys! Juliana vox is just wonderful. Guitiars, bass and drums are right on. Great lyrics! Wow!

Real good
Thanks, Carrie. Julian's harmony and backing vox certainly added a lot to the song. The rest of the boys did real good, too :-) Glad you liked it. Regards, Peter.
