Description
LISTENER BEWARE: This is NOT music, but rather an immersive sound experience.

A couple of years ago I was taking a course in Sound Design for movies, tv and video games. It was fascinating and I really learned a lot about how important sound (or silence) is to the viewing experience. One of the assignments for the class was to create a soundscape that very clearly tells a story. We could only use music if it was an essential piece of the narrative and there needed to be a clear passage of time and space. The results of this project were amazing! Some students had you walking through shopping malls or carnivals, others took place in homes or schools, and still others whisked you away to exotic locales like a space colony. Well, I immediately had an idea of what I wanted to create, and after a lot of work, I was pretty psyched with the end result (and my professor liked it too. :D

So it's often said on this site, "I was cleaning out my hard drive and found...." and now it's my turn to say it. My poor little MacBook Pro is on it's last legs, hanging on by a thread and before I administer the Final Rite I did a full back-up to an external drive, which means that I spent a lot of time sifting through memory lane - and I came across this.

I'm posting it because, well, for the same reason you all post all the stuff you create. lol....honestly, I found this exercise to be extremely helpful in learning to layer and work with panning to really create a full, rich sound experience. I highly recommend doing this sometime just for fun, especially if you're trying to learn how to use a new DAW.

And....enough outta me. I've got a bunch of new music in the works, but can't seem to finish anything at the moment, so....

Enjoy this evening walk. I highly (HIGHLY) recommend headphones.

Wow!
Not what I expected, but extremely cool! I'm going to start teaching my students how to use Mixcraft (Windows based DAW at my school). Some may want to try something like this. Thanks for sharing.

Great post!
I was lucky to have my good headphones handy - this was a wonderful adventure. And with the help of the photo it is very easy to imagine what you describe with audio.

Just like your music, the atmosphere you create here is calm, intriguing and with a certain depth that I've come to look for and appreciate.

Fascinating
Fascinating listen, Shay. Your use of sonic imagery across the stereo spectrum really does paint a vivid, engaging picture, especially when the artwork is taken into consideration. Not music, but thoroughly entertaining none-the-less. Thanks, Peter.

Enjoyed your project. I love audio soundscapes like this one, they give you a lot to play with in terms of learning the layering process. Enjoyed it!

LISTENER BEWARE hahaha. Thanks for the warning. Oddly enough, I made one of these years ago using sounds from Logic. It was not very happy. It was supposed to hint at someone following a person who had just left a party. Then there's a thump, and the sound of the remote outdoors and a running river water sound, then back to the city, sirens, police radio sounds, then courtroom sounds, then it got really dark -- the guy goes to Hell for his crimes, and that was no fun ... a dark ambient trend ... but I never came up with an ending. Anyway ... enough blather. So you can guess that I really enjoyed this. A New Mexico walk off the beaten path. Well done. But you probably wrecked the grading curve with this.

Quite the treck
It's remarkable all of the meanings we can get from how sound is presented. Our ability to pick out and recognize a wide variety of tones to relate them to our previous experiences, or fill in the blanks with our imagination is pretty amazing.

Thanks for the journey!
Doug

Good use
of some sounds I seem to recognize and some that I don't. All in all a nice story where the desert eventually gets some rain...

(I did a "fun" version of similar type called Villain Theme.)

Thanks and take care,
Henke

An immersive sound experience...
IS music. You create not just a mood here, but a whole scene (story) that is many-layered and that comes from many directions involving many differing communities. Quite a feat in just 4 minutes. (And is that a heartbeat to tie it all together?)
