Lyrics
The Warning Bells – Peter Bowen (April 2012)

Lately I’ve been starting to think
The world is spinning out of control
Too many people, got too many problems
We’re digging ourselves into a hole

The gap between, the haves and have-nots
Is getting bigger every day
The planet is hurting
Won’t somebody show us the way?

Can you hear the warning bells
Ringing throughout the land?
Our house of cards is falling.
Are you steady of hand?
Sorting through fact from fiction
It’s hard to know what is in store
But the bells are so insistent
They’re getting hard to ignore

Poverty, hunger and starvation;
Obesity, fast food and disease
Corrupt politicians, modern robber barons
Foreign wars and boat refugees

Climate change, pollution, global warming
Corporate greed, bad debt, credit squeeze
With a rising population
Soon the world might be on its knees

Can you hear the warning bells
Ringing throughout the land?
Our house of cards is falling.
Are you steady of hand?
Sorting through fact from fiction
It’s hard to know what is in store
But the bells are so insistent
They’re getting hard to ignore

The Warning Bells
What lovely playing ... the acoustic really does shine tonally as does the warm and thick electric tone. Really like the chorus/bridge progression melodically and your vocals and harmonies are wonderful ... confident. Such feeling and passion in your electric lead ... the best I've heard you play. This is truly a well composed and played piece. The bell through me at first ... maybe might have worked better at the end. Great post Peter,! You have outdone yourself with this in my opinion.
Cheers

Hells bells :-)
Thanks, Stan. I really appreciate your comments. I did spend a fair bit of time fiddling with the bells at the end but finally I decided that warning bells were probably meant to be discordant by their very nature and I ran with the tonal clash. Your support is highly valued. Take care, Peter.

Single minded...
Thanks, Andrew. Glad you thought this turned out alright. I spent a fair bit of time fiddling with the mix and changing things back again. This morning (our time) I just decided to post and be done with it :-) My last three songs have been developed from a single phrase. It is an interesting way to write a song. I appreciate your support. Take care, Peter.

Warning bells
Beautiful guitars start this off - both the acoustic and the electric. I like the movement through the chords. Warm vocal and tight harmonies. Evocative lead break - lovely tone on the G&L. Good lyrics that say important things. Crisp recording. Excellent work!

Shure thing
Hi Philip. I miked my homemade acoustic with an SM58 through the Presonus Audiobox and it worked well. It was interesting to go back and use the Shure rather than my AKG condenser mic. I think the quality of the audio interface makes all the difference. Glad you liked the guitar work. Talk soon. Thanks, Peter.

Harmonies...
Glad you liked the harmonies, Julian. I scribbled "CSN harmonies..." on my rough lyrics draft of the chorus when I was developing the arrangement because I pictured them doing something pretty special with it. As they would with lines out of the "Z" section of a phone book, for that matter. LOL. Thanks for your kind words. Talk soon, Peter.

Warning bells
The balance between the sweet acoustic and throaty electric is superb. I love hearing that G&L ever since you did that early ad lib track a while ago when you first got it. Great tune built on a premise that could have been cheesy and hackneyed but turned out brilliant. Excellent stuff Peter.

Out of Control
Love the guitar work. Very nice, smooth, tasteful. Timely song on a topic I've touched on myself. Sad but true but the enlightened few can't drag the rest of humanity along the right path. We all have human flaws. Unfortunately some have enough power and wealth to inflict theirs on all the rest of us.

CSN influence
Hi Freddy. You have hit the nail on the head. I was thinking CSN several times during the development of the song. Their harmonies in songs like "Helplessly Hoping" and "Find the Cost of Freedom" set the absolute benchmark as far as I am concerned. Just glad it came out OK. Talk soon, Peter.

For starters, an excellent piece of writing. Cool, sinuous minor key melody & strong lyrics. Then such clean, simple but effective guitars.

I like the idea of
writing a song based on phrases.looking forward to "b****r me, what the heck was that?" lol

This has a nice feel to it despite the slightly stark warning and message....love the drumless nature of it as well...the bass riff stands out ...whether attached to the electric, acoustic or stand alone bass ?

Bells tolling bleakly at the end nice touch.

In praise of the phrase
Thanks, Chris. You know I almost added a spoken outro to this - "Surely, it can't be that serious? It is. And stop calling me Shirley!" - but I decided to play it with a straight bat :-) The bass is me pencilling in MIDI using a tweaked GB setting called "Studio Bass". I still feel I should have chased up Chris or Andrew... Take care, Peter.

I like this as well as anything I've heard for you so far.Has a really nice edge to it.I can feel a sense of urgency in there. And the contrast that the electric brings is a plus,,a few more fills would have been even better(for my taste) but it's great as is......Enjoyed it very much.

Haves and Have-nots...
Thanks for dropping by for the apocalypse, J :-) I appreciate your very kind words. I searched around for a while to get the a thick electric tone to contrast the acoustic. I was happy with what I ended up with. Glad it had a sense of urgency. There are a lot of things that are not working all that well in the world for some people at the moment but I suppose there have always been "haves" and "have-nots" throughout history... Solos...
on guitar lead are particularly beautiful (and beautifully played). Caught me right from the start and you didn't disappoint as the tune rolled along, esp. with that pretty bridge at around 2 minutes. I'm also envious of the rich sound in your bass. I wish I could figure out how to pull that off in some of my own numbers. It is LOUD, but it never gets in the way and always sounds so rich and mellow. I like the lyrics, too, and your vocals are set perfectly with the minor-ish tune you've written. I loved the bells...but which they'd have come in a little sooner and left a little sooner, too, so that they'd meld in a little more with your final mix. But that's a small nit and has virtually no significance when balanced against all the other very fine things you have going on here. Such a well-wrought song in every way. You took great care with it and your effort shows...effortlessly. Sorry I am so late to the party, but hope my few comments add affirmation to what others have written. Just wonderful.

Tweaking torment :-)
Hi Paul. As always, I value your kind words. The bass is interesting. It is just pencilled in MIDI but it did take me a fair bit of trial and error to get a sound I was happy with. I am glad you thought it turned out OK. The bells caused me plenty of indecision, too. I finally just went with them as is because I got sick of moving them around and trying new entry points, panning and fades. I appreciate your detailed comments. Take care, Peter.

Ringing endorsement (sic) :-)
Thanks, Patty. I really appreciate your support. Glad you liked the acoustic work. The warning bells are ringing... Take care, Peter

I love the blend of styles!
I love the mixture of blues/folk/acoustic! Also, you have a great gift for lyrical expression; a gift I'm afraid I do not share. Thanks for sharing; downloaded!
