Description
This started with a straight-forward blues progression in Bb. After I’d had the crossroad idea for the first verse (a common enough theme) the rest just sort of flowed from that.

I originally had an acoustic guitar solo in it, but it was struggling to get above the other guitars so I sent it off to Peter Thorneycroft and asked if he’d put some harp on it to replace that solo.

I also wondered about harmony. On the one hand, it cries out for some harmony, on the other I thought it was a solitary sort of song that was better with just one vocal. We compromised and Peter put a unison vocal on the final verse.

Peter also called Garry Whelan to help out with some slide guitar to add more variety to the arrangement. Thanks Garry!

The song came back to me after a fair bit of work on the mix by Peter – for which I am extremely grateful!

Thanks also to PeterB7858 for his thoughts on the first version of this.

So here it is. I hope you enjoy it!

Credits
• Philip Gardner – acoustic guitars, bass and vocal
• Peter Thorneycroft – harmonica, 2nd vocal, mix & master
• Garry Whelan – slide guitar

The art work is the 2012 winner of the Archibald Prize by Tim Storrier.
Storrier's depiction of himself in The Histrionic Wayfarer (after Bosch) was based on a canvas by 16th-century painter Hieronymus Bosch, and represented the idea of a dilemma for a figure "making a decision between right and wrong", Storrier said.

Lyrics
At The Crossroad

I’m coming to a crossroad, and I don’t know where to go [x 2]
It’s too late for the high road, and much too slippery for the low.

There’s an angel on my shoulder and the devil by my side [x 2]
I heard the devil whisper “It’s now you must decide”

So will you walk beside me, will you help me find the way [x 2]
I know if you’re not with me, I can’t face another day.

Good description, Andrew - I guess my hands just keep doing folkie style picking! Thanks for the compliment on the writing. The mix was mainly Peter - he spent a fair bit of time on that so he'll pleased you noticed it! Thanks again for your support - much appreciated!

Philip, I'm a blues lover and in your own way you have created a tasty blues piece here based on a traditional blues progression. The lyrics are perfect for the genre.I agree with your decision to not do a harmony vocal and sing it in unison. The harp is haunting and well done. Your picking holds it all together and that slide is complimentary to the harp. I keep thinking I hear a bass at around the 45 second mark but it must be a guitar. Excellent tune and the mix is big and rich. I love it! Big thumbs up ...
Cheers

Bass
Whoops! I forgot to mention the bass in the description. Yes, it comes in from the second verse. I've corrected the description now!

Thanks for the general comments on the song - I'm very pleased that you like it!

Re the painting, the Archibald Prize is a big thing in the Australian art world. It's for a portrait, so it may seem a bit odd that a faceless person is the subject here. However, the artist's face is on the scrap of paper floating in the clouds (hard to see in this small version). I was in Sydney at the weekend to see my brother and had a look at all the Archibald Prize entries at the Sydney Gallery. I think you'd have liked a few of them!

Something special
This has turned out very well, Philip. You must be pleased. The mix/master has your vocal sounding as warm and unforced as any song you have posted. The addition of Peter's subtle harmonica and Garry's tasteful slide gives the song much added interest and obviates the need for unnecessary harmonies. There is a fine sense of space in the mix and it allows all elements of the instrumentation to be clearly articulated. It has, indeed, turned into something special. Congratulations to all. Talk soon, Peter.

Glad you liked it, Peter. It's been interesting for me. After your first comments I sent it off to Peter T and let him do what he liked with it (although he did keep asking me if I was happy with where it was going). I think it ended up with just enough in it to keep the vocal intimate, which is what I was after, while still having continuing interest. Thanks for your help on this one!

Yeah, man. This has a Dylanesque quality that I really dig. The just right fingerpicking sets it up, then excellent performances keep it flowing--Peter's harp, Garry's slide, and the warm, relaxed vocal. Wonderful recording and mix, too. Quality track, guys.

I appreciate your comments, Ricky. Re the production, I think sometimes I am like the man in the picture above - a whole lot of stuff loaded up, which I then discard and try to get back to what's actually useful. Glad you enjoyed the song, Tony. re the last verse, I see what you mean, although it's not what I intended. I deliberately left open who the "you" might be so that the listener could bring their own meaning to the song. However, I can see that the pronoun "you" grammatically relates to the previous noun, which is "devil". Not sure how to fix that, but I'll think about it! Thanks for the careful listening - much appreciated!

Heck....A/Bass hits it on the
head....FolkBlues....and why not hellfire it's a good genre ...Blues is folk music when you get right down to it and to put folk picking on a blues prog is magical to my ears.....my mate accuses me of doiung too much double picking when I play blues and then he gave up and said it is what it is and you play how you play...I have a country twang to my blues ...you got the folky sound, greateroony works for me ....keep on keeping on with 'em....the harp is a delight,I cannot manage to get that depth of tone with mine so kudos to Peter T for that and to the othewr guys a la bass and slide super stuff../..

Thanks, Chris- good to see you've survived the nightshift intact! Glad you liked the song and the playing. Re the category, I guess all of person's music is connected, and that blurs the genre. Nicely done
Count me among those who hear a lot of folk in this. However, I would like to point out that Dylan has been known to dabble pentatonically and Lightfoot's Sundown is about as bluesy as it gets.

Actually, it was the folky aspect to this that I liked best. Kind of sets it apart, makes it unique.

I like...
...the way the orchestra builds in this song. When the bass and slide guitar begin to punctuate the simple opening, it just opens up the whole song to such marvelous little musical opportunities. You throw them in here and there with seeming abandon, but they all sound just so absolutely natural as they close out phrases nearly everywhere. Nicely orchestrated and nicely produced track, Philip. Very much in the folk style and very enjoyable to listen to.
