Description
This is my anniversary post :)

I'm finding it harder and harder to finish songs off these days, and I'm not really sure this is finished either.

Lyrics are maybe self-explanatory (maybe not). Music is all me.

Hope you enjoy it.

Lyrics
Talk To Myself
©2012 Neil Porter

Talk to myself just a little too much these days
I’m just trying to find what’s going on
I still get puzzled by this crazy haze
It’s been in my head for way too long

I’m gonna rock with it
Gotta roll with it
I’m gonna get back in control
Then I’m gonna go with it
I’m gonna ease my mind
Goin back in time
I’m gonna get back in control
Then I’m gonna grow with it

Wind myself up just a little too tight these days
Just trying to stop things going wrong
Wish I could get back to my easy ways
Go back, get back, go back home

I’m gonna rock with it
Gotta roll with it
I’m gonna get back in control
Then I’m gonna go with it
I’m gonna ease my mind
Goin back in time
I’m gonna get back in control
Then I’m gonna grow with it

Flying just a little too close to the sun some days
Maybe I’ll fall but that doesn’t seem quite right
There’s no escaping from this crazy maze
Fall down, drop down, shut down

I’m gonna rock with it
Gotta roll with it
I’m gonna get back in control
Then I’m gonna go with it
I’m gonna ease my mind
Goin back in time
I’m gonna get back in control
Then I’m gonna grow with it

Love it. Great quality and completely original. I can think of nothing it reminds me of. The groove, the changes, melodies.....all you Neil. Killer arrangement. Pro mix and master.

Cool melody, changes and skanking rhythm. I can relate to the lyrics. I'm nodding my head along to
this poppy and somehow angular groove. Cool post, Neil.

Interesting chord changes. Everything has its place - the guitars, the organ, the vocal, the drums all just work! Bright mix. You are very good at this, Neil - another excellent post!

great groove
I really love the funky rhythm. Very catchy, Neil. Lyrics I think we all can understand and relate to. Stepping back and letting go, remembering we don't have to worry about everything we don't have total control of.

Fun tune, man.

Catchy funk groove and clever use of some unusual chord progressions give this a unique flavour that makes it stand out from the pack, Neil. Your midi skills are super impressive. The drums, organ, bongos, etc. all support the groove very comfortably. Excellent mix/master as expected. Thanks, Peter.

I really
like this Neil, I had to pull out my guitar and figure out the chord progression in the middle cause it is so cool- I think you are playing a C with an E bass to BFBE voicing (Bsus4b5)? I love the way you have the rhythm guitar on 2 and 4 with the melody in between. The sound on the bass is awesome.

Love that kind of talk Mark!
Your comment made me go back and re-address the chords I used, and I think you are correct. Interestingly, this was a song I was thinking about asking you to add to in the short instrumental (or rather "vocal-free") sections, but then thought it sounded OK as is. Maybe next one :)
I really appreciate that you find my stuff interesting, and yes, you can't beat a Precision for recording this sort of thing.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

at least you're listening
love the bass. man you've got such a distinctive voice, one of those voices that it's a pleasure to listen closely too. a lot of your stuff reminds me of the kind of thing that don was would produce. I don't really know why. Anyway glad you're around MJ, you've got a great ear, and i enjoy your tunes when they come around on the ipod...

Strange chordal progression ,,, funky almost XTC like in parts with the guitar ... almost dis-chordal but in cool way. I like the raw tone you're getting from the tele. I can totally relate to your lyrics. I could hear some vocal harmonies especially in the "rock with it" chorus part. Good tune Neil!
Cheers

The Age of Eccentricity
Seven years. Obviously - given the crazy-haze funky chord sequencing here (the music underscoring the lyrical theme), you are getting more eccentric with age.

That's a good thing!

I like the chord progression, and it feels like the arrangement has a reggae influence. It's a little quirky which makes it a good choice for the lyric. Creative and original. Mix is crisp and clear.

You know, for a bass player...
...you have become this very interesting guitar player, both in terms of rhythm and snaky leads...And you've gotten good at sort of programming the whole band as if it's one huge instrument...

My recent experiment is to listen to things on these eeny weenie MacBook speakers that barely exist and see how much song comes through...Then I put on headphones and am shocked to discover how even cooler it all is...

This mix manages to survive the MacBook experience with flying colors, and then it has lots of spare oomph when the headphones are plugged in...

The lyrics are among your best, I think. Pretty straightforward, and I very much relate to them...

Loob said 1894 days ago (May 19th, 2012)
Only nit I have with this is maybe EQ on voice.
I posted an old mix from 2004 that has a similar problem neil, and I may remix it cuz of that. In places your voice gets hard to hear against the band. When you are going to the lower registers in your vocal scale. That seems to be the only place too Neil. When you are in the upper parts it's not a problem for me. Like maybe the bass is stepping on the voice in places? I would think EQ or maybe some compression to bring those lower parts up so they stay on top.... Same thing that is needed on the track I posted. Otherwise this is your usual killer stuff! Very original, very crisp, and I like the chording. Kinda unusual and works very well. Unusual is good!

Thanks for the listen - I really like it when people who know what they are talking about (like your good self) make helpful suggestions. I've always assumed that the low volume I get in lower frequency vocals were solely because that was the range I am softest. I've tried moving into the mic (which helps a bit) and boosting the volume in low passaes, but I hadn't really considered a clash with the bass. Best investigate!
Thanks again!
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Groovy.

But, hey, it works. This song has such a cool beat to it and you play with such confidence and never miss a beat, slick throughout and without even a hint of hesitation. Completely original. What a great song.

Ahh...
... man did I miss your signature sound or what?! It's good to hear those odd chords, deep bass lines, and that Jiguma voice again. Top production, as usual!

Pretty sweet lyrics too... I kinda relate to 'em. Fine work, Mr. Porter :)
