Description
Eight years here at MacJams. More than 100 tunes posted. Friends. Great music day after day, weeks on end, year after year.

Who'da thunk it?

I mean 8 years. Seriously.

This one goes back even further than that, kind of bringing in a vibe both musically and lyrically from my mid to late 80s college days. A fun song to do for lots of reasons.

So, hopefully you will enjoy my little present to all y'all to celebrate my time here at MJ.

And thanks to everyone who has listened to and supported me all these years.

Lyrics
Sideways Figure 8
@2012 Joseph Gurner

Standing on the shoulders
Of everyone I’ve ever known
Looking out the window
At everyone watching me

Tell me this. Tell me that.
Tell me things I want to know
Move along. Carry on.
Walking on until the dawn.

The world turns on and on and on
As I fall forever from dream to dream
No statement of reality
Arms stretched out to the sky

I take the world that gives me life
And spread my wings and fly
As dreams are dreamed in wakeful nights
Throughout eternity

People come and people go
Seeing what we leave behind
Following the footsteps
Left behind in the sand

Sing for me. Sing for you
Music plays on and on
Take your time. Take my place
Take me back to my home

The world turns on and on and on
As I fall into reality
No dreams to dream and dream and dream
Arms wrapped around the sky

I give the world that takes my life
And fall down to the ground
I sleep beneath the sunny skies
Throughout eternity

Step into the light of day
Send the children out to play
Hide and seek. Hide forever
Never finding. Never lost

The compass points back to home
The needle’s path can lead you wrong
In the darkness. In the light.
In the dreams you’ve never dream

Find your own ecstasy
Agony will set us free
Push away those things that hide
The candle light inside the night

Move into another state
Free from what you leave behind
Can’t get free. Can’t get free
Can’t we fly away

Step into the light of day
Send the children out to play
Hide and seek. Hide forever
Never finding. Never lost

The compass points back to home
The needle’s path can lead you wrong
In the darkness. In the light.
In the dreams you’ve never dream

Find your own ecstasy
Agony will set us free
Push away those things that hide
The candle light inside the night

Move into another state
Free from what you leave behind
Can’t get free. Can’t get free
Can’t we fly away

Can’t get free. Can’t get free
Can’t get free. Can’t get free

First of all, congratulations on eight years here at MJ.

Now to the song. I love the lyrics. They are abstract enough for anybody to relate to and find personal meaning within. Love your vocal. The double tracking and delay are very effective. Cool chorus and I really dig the harmony there.

Great driving backing track. The bass pumps along while adding cool little melodic figures underneath (Very Mike Mills). The little descending guitar lines work great. They add atmosphere that matches up perfectly with the mood of the lyrics.

Funny...
...you should mention Mike Mills. When I first started learning to play bass in college, part of what I did was learn the bass line to R.E.M. tunes. They were and still are a big influence.

Glad you liked the lyrics. I had the music for a while, but no words. But once I got the first line going, they just spewed forth and almost didn't stop. There are a couple of lines in there I'm pretty proud of.

Thanks for stopping by and taking a listen. And thanks for diving into my old tunes! You picked several I haven't thought of in quite a while.

Good one Joseph
and happy jammiversary. Generally it's the type of quality 80s-esque Indie/Pop/Rock number I'd expect from a reminisce to your college days.. with some tinges of crossing into Gothic rock mostly with the lead quitar work. Well sung and good lyrics.

like the chord progressions in the chorus quite a bit. it does indeed have that 80s sound but still works just fine. your singing sounds so young.

Dang it! I didn't realize I was one of the good guys. Now I'll have to scrap all my evil plans... ;)

I always appreciate you support Karen. You're definitely one of the people that has kept MJ a lot of fun and a great place to be for so many years. Thanks for that!

Flock of *Young* Seagulls
Nice one, Joe. While this tune has many of the familiar '80s elements, it also has some Neil Young overtones. The lyrics manage to walk the tightrope between abstract and the concrete quite nicely, yielding a common thread that runs through all of our experiences. Nicely done... and Happy 8th MacJamminversary! ;)

Oh man!
Would I love to see Neil Young and A Flock of Seagulls perform together. It's one of those things that would be so weird, it's have to be good.

Always appreciate you stopping by and taking a listen!

Kinda has a Byrds feel to it
Kinda mystic. Catchy melody! The vox could maybe come up just a tad in the mix but it's cool! Nice one! Happy anniversary!

Verbosity
A cool tune - I admire your ability to carry the lyrics throughout the song - it was verbose without being repetitive or carrying on. Congrats on your 8 years - my 8 years is next month!

Yeah, Joe...
You're one of the good ones...

Eight YEARS...Gee... And I can NEVER CATCH UP...

I like the way this morphs from an almost Eighties pop opening into sort of Sixties/Seventies pop psychedelia...

Okay, I'm not going to say ANYTHING that involves the words 'Crazy Horse'. In any context. Not gonna do it.

Joe...
Has it been that long? Haha. Great to see that we have all endured and the love for music has kept the fire burning all through that time. Keep making music, my friend! It's one of those things that allows us to keep getting better and enjoying life and feeling young. :))
