Description
This song started as a set of guitar chords - the sort of progression my guitar teacher from years ago would have given me an an exercise! I tried a few melodies and finally came up with something that I liked. I thought it needed bass, but when I tried couldn't get anything that I thought sounded even half reasonable. Solution? Ask a real bass player to help out. I recently been listening to a few songs on MacJams that Chris Flynn (Rok41) had been involved in and was mightily impressed When asked about a collab, he accepted. We talked about adding drums, too (I had some ordinary sounding loops at one stage) and Chris suggested Scott Fugate (scofugate). A while ago I'd listened to what Scott had done with lbstrat (http://www.macjams.com/song/70469) so I was very pleased about that possibility!

When Chris sent back the first version with his bass and solo I couldn't keep the smile off my face. What great players he and Scott are! Then Chris did some mixing magic with it, including the adding of some light strings, all while I sat back like a baby magpie waiting to be fed tasty morsels.

So here it is. I hope you like it!

The photos is just plucked off the net from a Google search...

• Guitars: Philip Gardner
• Bass/Keys/Master/Mix: Chris Flynn
• Drums: Scott Fugate

You're a Special Guitarist My Friend!
Still remind me of Wes and such wonderful tonal quality. Licks so sweet I call them chocolate. Yeah Phillip play it baby! So melodic and grooved with your fellow MacJammers chiming in with their Magic. Thank you for the ride!

Such a peaceful little tune...
...that is beautifully played, and with just the right touch from your collaborators. A very pleasant experience to hear this lovely song tonight. Oh, and the words to your lyrics fit so nicely to the tune that runs effortlessly above all that wonderful harmony. Excellent composition that suffers only because of its brevity.

Hi Andrew
Thanks for all that. Glad you enjoyed the melody. That "effortless" playing seemed to come after hours of practice - ain't it always the way?! The bass solo is probably my favourite part of this now. Your support is always much appreciated - great to hear from you!

The bass and the drums always need to work together, Scott, and you and Chris have done it beautifully. And I agree about the bass solo - it's stunning! Thanks for lending your talent to this tune!

Liquid tone
Lovely, liquid tone on the Howard Roberts, Philip. The lead work flows with a simplicity that belies the thought and skill required to produce such an effect on the listener. Nice chord combo, too. Chis brings the whole piece up a level in class (loving the solo) and Scott's subtle, understated drums just keeps the groove ticking over nicely. Pretty impressive photo, too. Talk soon, Peter.

Geez Philip, this is beautiful. Your tone is exquisite! I have a new found admiration for your skills after listening to your jazz chops. It sounds and feels so natural for you ... 1:50? a bass solo? real nice Chris. This shows your versatility and Scott is like a warm carpet holding everything together. That last little riff you do Philip at the end ... nice!
Cheers

Hi Stan
Thanks for the careful listen, Stan- I'm delighted you like it. I also think Chris's bass solo is "real nice" - it makes the bass inextricably part of the overall tune. Good drummers like Scott are able to add colour unobtrusively. Glad you liked the ending, too. Thanks for stopping by!

Guitars in Autumn
Here in the US we are getting ready for summer, and it is easy to forget that down in Australia you are actually in autumn right now! Such a lovely piece of music, and so well played by all. I am very familiar with Chris' and Scott's talents - you couldn't have picked a better couple of guys to play with you. The guitars are so smooth - Chris that bass solo sounds great! Scott is solid as always. Great tune - really enjoyed!
