Description
Bryn had put some audio in our shared Dropbox and I pulled a beat out and started recording over the top of it. What I really liked about the beat was the fuzzy abrupt noises that were in it. I added another track of me playing my sons bongo drums, and then built the song. the organ chords play the same thing all the way through. any changes are a result of the vocal melody changing and the notes of the ambient sounds playing something outside of the chords.

I finally got to use the exs instrument made from bird cries (you can hear it in the chorus). the metallic pads were done with reaktor and alchemy. everything else was in Logic. For some reason I keep picturing Peter Gabriel doing a much better version of this (even though it's written for my kids).

Lyrics
i'll build a home for you
to shelter yourself in
down by the shore
the air is fresh and you can breathe

don't you know what I see in you?
don't you know how i feel when i'm with you?
you should know that I chose to be here
to keep you safe

i'll grow some food for you
to nurture yourselves with
i'll teach you all I can
i want to see you thrive

don't you know what I see in you?
don't you know how i feel when i'm with you?
you should know that I chose to be here
to keep you safe
to keep you warm

nothing will ever touch you
no one will ever be coarse to you
you will never go hungry
i'll keep you safe
i'll keep you warm
i'll keep you safe
i'll keep you warm
i'll keep you safe
i'll keep you warm...
to keep you warm

safe and warm
the whole song is warm and womb like, like the way you bend the sounds in this, another excellent tune!

thanks man, bending sounds is half the fun. my fave is probably that warped guitar sounding thing (which is really a piano track that I bounced to audio and then ran through a few effects and edited).

you're sweet. i would love nothing more than to be holed up in the studio with Bryn for a couple of week (although we might just end up drinking coffee and talking the entire time).

Ah,
A very inviting overall sound with just the right beat and heart. Great job, Bryn and Michael. Peter Gabriel should be so lucky. :)

nicely done michael
really nicely done
i think it paid off re-doing the vocals and you have placed them really nicely in this mix
i cant believe this derives from one of those throw away things i dropped in the pod

safe as..
Very laid back strange sounds.
I wouldn't have though Peter Gabriel if you hadn't mentioned it but I can see what you mean...though maybe he wouldn't do a 'better' version.
I like the reverb on your voice. Is that a particular preset/AU?
A touch of Kurt Cobain in his more tender moments in the vox.
The synth sound at the end sounds like a wood saw.
What is it?
Anyway, cool track
cheers

thanks man. let's see, the wood saw sound is something I put together in Reaktor (love that synth). you can do some pretty wild non-traditional synthesis with it. i suck at it so far, but i'll get the hang of it. the reverb on the voice is the vocals going through Logics tape delay (I think I set it up for eighth notes) on a send, and then I used an impulse response for a small room that I loaded into space designer (also on a send). there are a lot of great free impulse responses online. the backups are totally dry with a highpass filter set at around 200. thanks again.

i can hear the gabriel reference. there is something here in that style instrumentally, maybe even in the pace you vocalize here as well

thanks for checking it out. PG has always been a fave singer of mine (even when I don't like the music). such abandon in his voice.

A very warm and nurturing tune ... anyone who has kids can relate. Musically so soft, dreamy ... like the air you breathe ... all the musical nuances are delicate sounding ... very creative.

I like the trippy backer, its half spooky and half whimsical. Cool lyrics. Vocals and harmonies sound great, but for my taste they could be up a db or 2 in the mix.

this creates
a great atmosphere, and impressive, gritty vocals, There's a really good new act signed with Arts & Crafts label called Gold & Youth, and this sounds a bit like them, just slower and more measured. This sounds like somebody who has really thought about it, even if I don't know what 'it' is.

thanks man
I think the "it" is the fact that I am happy to roll over and the youth have their time (especially my kids). not that I have given up, it's just a beautiful thing to watch others bloom. thanks for the heads up on Gold and Youth as well. will check them out in a bit.

The heck with the sounds...
...this is a good song. It's a song about the love of our/you children that evades sappiness, and hence is to be treasured...

And yes, it would glow in a full Gabriel treatment...
