Description
I travel through the Victorian countryside a bit as part of the work I do. This song came out of that. The tracks are:
1. Steel strung acoustic (Maton FG100)
2. Acoustic with open G tuning (the Maton again)
3. Vocal
4. Bass (5 string Fender Squier)
5. Guitar fills (Gibson Howard Roberts)
6. Guitar lead break (The Gibson again)
7. Garageband Synth Texture – “Lalaria pad”

The picture of the flame tree was taken somewhere on the east coast of Australia (I can’t remember exactly where).

Lyrics
The Road Home

Words and Music by Philip Gardner

The sun is high above me, there’s a haze upon the road
The crows are sitting idly on the wire
Looking at the Jersey cows that are drinking from a dam
While flame trees wave and set the sky on fire

It seems to take forever to get from town to town
And I’m weary from the journey that I’m on
All that drives me forward, that keeps my mind alive
Is knowing that this road will take me home

It’s getting near to night fall, the shadows they are long
The birds are getting noisy as they fly
I’ve been away for far too long and I’m tired of the time
My eyes are staring forward at the line

I know it has to happen, I know it’s what I do
But some days all I think of is just getting home to you
Stretching out before me is another 100 miles
Will this road I’m travelling ever end

[Instrumental]

It seems to take forever to get from town to town
The weight of all that’s in my mind keeps me feeling down

Stretching out before me is another 100 miles
But I know I’m coming home to you.
So much is ahead of me but when this day is done
I know that I’ll be back at home with you

Another quality post
Lovely warm opening, Philip, and then that familiar, welcoming vocal kicks in and echoes the mood. You have captured a feeling that all weary travellers know well and translated it sensitively to song. The mix is nicely balanced, too. Another quality post. Talk soon, Peter.

Glad you liked it, Peter! It's coming back home in more ways than one - the style is straight out of the early folkie days, with the advantage of modern recording. See you soon.

Aahh Nice
As you know, your voice always sells all your songs. Excellent arrangement. Heartfelt lyrics fit the honesty of the tune. I do wonder if a more natural sounding string sound would be more fitting. Also the acoustic guitars seem to overpower your vocals a bit. I think the vox should be the main focus. Really nice tune about your everyday travels.

Thanks
I appreciate the detailed comments. I tend to agree about the vocal being a touch too far back in the mix. I did pull the guitars back, but they seemed duller, so I put them back again to keep them clean. I might have another go and see if I can get the balance right. Re the strings, anything you suggest that works? All the GB string sounds I try I don't much like so I keep going back to the synth, or occasionally a Hammond organ sound.

Great lyrics! Wonderful imagery! Lovely melody in the Jim Croce tradition. Confident vocal performance that you make sound effortless. Excellent arrangement. Flawless picking. I like the tasty and crystal electric fills and solo.

Hi Andrew
Glad you enjoyed it, Andrew. Thanks for the comments on the guitar fills - I enjoy that sort of playing and know I can tend to overplay, so I'm glad it came across OK. THanks again for your continued support - it's inspiring.

What a pretty song.
So calm and relaxed and with a gentle accompaniment that just oozes with delight with every arpeggio and especially in the big lead at the bridge. Lyrics carefully paint the scene with simple imagery, too, making for a visceral drive alongside you. I would like to encourage you to SING LOUDER or bring up the volume there. You have a pleasant voice, but you've put it so far back of the band that it fairly gets lost. Come on, now. Don't be so shy. Your work is so worthy to be heard— every bit of it. ... Loved the song.

Nice tune - guitars sound great - acoustic and electric both. Your delivery on this kinda reminds me of Glen Campbell - very pleasing to the ear! Enjoyed -

Glad you liked the guitar tones, Sig - I'm happy with how they're sounding at the moment! Thanks also for the Glen Campbell comparison - although I wish I had his vocal range (assuming he still has the range he had- over the last few years he seems to have gotten in the news for things other than playing and singing). Thanks for stopping by - much appreciated!

The Road Home
Agree with the comments about your voice "selling" your work. And that's saying something given that the guitar work is so immaculate. This probably falls into the C&W genre when considering popular music, but I wish it was more like this than what they play here in the U.S. and A.

lovely warm heart felt chord changes. kind of tune that would have an audience in silence just listen to the feel and charm of it. thats not an easy thing to achieve. very well played. great acoustic tones. your style reminds me to the theme tune of an animation series called 'bramley hedge', dont know if you have heard that. enjoyed it a lot. quality all round. cheers graham

Sorry I'm late on this ... real warm feeling I'm getting from this ... a bit of melancholy but that might just be me. Lovely nuances with the little harmonic pings and the synth pad is subtle and adds a nice blanket to the lovely guitar playing. Good mix Philip.

The Road Home
The lyric does a nice job painting word pictures.
Strong vocals and picking. I got a little lost with the structure. This seemed to start the chorus "It seems to take forever", but then it wasn't repeated later in the song.

Thanks for the comment, Dave. Interesting point about the structure. There isn't a chorus in the song, but I can see where you're coming from in the way that second part of the first verse works. Something for me to think about... Thanks for stopping by - much appreciated!
