Somewhere buried in my ancient memory cells, I recall a musical form that was popular in the 19th century called "the legend." Now, I could completely be making that up, but just for the sake of debate, I did a little web search and turned up the following which I offer for your amusement and consideration. It sounds pretty good to me...
Legend: musical accompaniment is now written for many visual formats: opera, movies, video games, & so on ... to tell a story. The music serves as a backdrop for the story. ... The aim of the legend musical form (legend in the story-telling sense) is to re-invent (or "re-envision") this process: if music can be written as a supplementary element of an audio-visual story, why couldn’t the music be written first, leaving the story up to many possibilities? Instead of the idea of writing new soundtracks for old movies or different operatic settings of traditional stories, why not consider the music the basis (a literal ‘cantus firmus’) for many new stories to be written? In the sense that the story is governed by the telling, instead of the other way around, the music becomes the legend, and whatever story is chosen serves as the backdrop.

That may be way too much information about this tiny number I concocted. Bottom line is this: I liked the title. Maybe you will find a story here.

Not too much info!
An inspiring concept! My sentiments reflect the previous writer's. An emotional space I often have difficulty reaching is opened up listening. Thanks!

Legend indeed!
Quite a picture you paint Paul. I love the concept of writing the music first and hanging a story around it.

For me this one has to be a romantic tragedy of soft focus anguish that has a peaceful and perhaps happy resolution.

Keep 'em coming maestro.

you know, as I get that little bit older, I begin to appreciate this genre a bit more. I am beginning to listen to more and more classical music as long as it is in a minor key and does not contain too many instruments. Perhaps it is my simple mind that controls these restrictions. In fact having began to use sampled classical instruments in my tunes recently, I have become aware of their potential, but also of the difficulty to get them to sound non digital, or expressive. You convey a degree of emotion here that is nicely defined. Many stories could be spun from this beginning. Thanx for posting this, I found it rather inspiring.

As always, I admire your musical sensibilities. I'm in awe of those who can compose at this level, stirring emotions and visual imagery. Your music is always thought provoking and this is no exception.

Thank you. The orchestration is classic, even some dissonance, what is not to like?

Beautiful arrangement
I was listening to Debussy this morning and this made a nice followup to it. I think my ears get too technical and first listening was spoiled by my inner-voice - how did that sound get produced, where is each string placed, etc. etc. but after calming down and closing the eyes, I got to enjoy it for its full effect on a second listen! Download link here seems broken, I'll check out your site.

While not literally,
this evokes the wonderful soundtrack to the recent silent movie called "The Artist".

A terrific film that cuts through the chatter of words and speaks to the soul. Just as your music does here Paul.

It 'legend' is a form...
...then you adopted the form well before this piece, Paul...

Just as a good many of your instrumental pieces suggest vocal phrasing, so too do a number of them suggest visual soundscapes and narrative structure... Gotta be the English teacher locked inside the piano guy...

Legend impressions
I really like this Paul. Especially like the transitions from full strings to solos for the cello and then the violin.

I see fog clearing from an Irish landscape at daybreak. A beautiful young woman looks toward the horizon. Through teary eyes, she struggles for a last look at her hero, who has left the homestead to battle evil forces threatening their existence. Before disappearing over the mountaintop, the hero looks toward home once more, raises his sword toward Heaven, and bids adieu.

The strings sound very good. The piano is sensitively done and provides a good structure for the strings to decorate. Paul, you've got a very wide musical vocabulary and a vivid musical imagination. A pleasure!
