How Did We Let This Happen? (with Songwriterz)

Description
I have always been impressed by the structure of songs where there were two people presenting different points of view. The two examples I most like are "Father and Son" by Cat Stevens, and "Don't Give Up" by Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush. Using that structure, I wrote a song about the end of a relationship. Of course, I needed someone to sing the female lines. Who better than Heidi Henricksen of Songwriterz. I sent her a version with all the backing (as usual for me, mostly a lot of guitars) and I was delighted when she said she would sing the part. I was even more delighted when she sent back what she had done. She has such a wonderfully clear, bell-like voice that can express a stunning range of emotions.

Now it was time for Michael Henriksen to wave his magic mixing hands over what had been put down. The result is much clearer, cleaner with everything in its own space, than I had been able to achieve.

And so, with many thanks to Heidi and Michael for bringing this to life, here is the finished product - we hope you enjoy listening to it!

AND NOW

After reading some of the comments below, we put together a stripped back version (no drums, fewer guitars) which Heidi has posted here:

Lyrics
How did we let this happen?
Words and music by Philip Gardner

HIM
It seemed to be so perfect it seemed to be so right
All that we looked forward to at the start of our new life
HER
We thought all our promises would last the length of time
All I’d ever dreamed about at last it would be mine
HIM
I’ve been calling out to you, but now you never hear
HER
All the words I’ve wasted, all the night-time tears

Chorus BOTH
How did we let this happen? Did we hear a warning bell?
All the promise of our lives, What was it broke the spell?

HER
Can’t you see the change in me, the things that fill my mind
You stay who you have always been, I’m leaving you behind
HIM
Was it all the hours away, or the time when I was here?
That turned you into someone else, who didn’t seem to care

Chorus BOTH
How did we let this happen? Did we hear the warning bell?
All the promise of our lives, What was it broke the spell?

And just when things seemed steady, just when things seemed clear
All the things we thought we had, seemed to disappear

Chorus BOTH
How did we let this happen? Did we hear the warning bell?
All the promise of our lives, What was it broke the spell?

Verse chords

Chorus chords

Wonderful melding of talents
You two sound exceptional together. The song is a great vehicle for your two voices. Great to hear you extend your vocal range, Philip. The mix and master are pro quality. There are some very tasty guitar lines but I wonder if the multiple guitars take the focus away from the vocals, just on occasions? Wonderful melding of talents, though, and one I hope will continue. Regards to all, Peter.

Hi Peter!
Thanks for the comments on the song. I think vocally it takes me back to working in pubs and reception places over the years, and out of the folk joints. I enjoyed it - especially the end product after Heidi and Michael had done what they do. At times too many guitars you think? You may be right there - I sort of can't help myself. I was thinking that the Gibson on one side and the Fender on the other sort of reflected the tension in the relationship, but that may be just a rationalisation for having fun with more guitars :-) I am also hoping that this will not the only collab with Songwriterz! See you soon.
PeterB7858 said 1699 days ago (September 29th, 2012)
The morning after :-)
Listening again with a clearer head (had a few wines last night :-)) and, again, I think the vocal chemistry between you two is very special. You were right to be excited about the song (as per your reply to Stan). The too many guitars line probably needs clarification. I think that somewhere between Stan's comment re the drums and my impressions re the guitars is the real point I was trying to make. I did guess that the left / right leads were mimicing the vocal duet but there occasionally seems to be some timing issues between some of your more complex lead guitar embellishments and the drums. To me it gets just a bit busy in a couple of spots when the vocals have more than enough presence to carry the song. Perhaps slightly simpler lead lines is the answer. The guitars do not need to carry the vocals on this one! None of this takes away from the wonderful song and the very fine collaboration between you, Heidi and Michael, though. Congratulations. Talk soon, Peter.

How Did We Let This Happen?
Wow! your voices are beautiful together. Just a lovely song. Well performed. I think it would work much better without the drum track...I found the track not quite in time with the music. Were they done to a click track? Otherwise a wonderful duet and a very strong song.
Cheers

Hi Stan
Thanks for the comments, Stan - glad you enjoyed it. The drums were originally an Apple loop that I used when putting down the guitar parts. Perhaps should have got a drummer to play along with it, but got excited about the song and the vocal and went with it as it was. Next time... Thanks for listening and for the comment - much appreciated!

boy girl
I like the vocal duet. Great singing.

There are two guitars constantly playing something solo-ish. I think it makes the mix a bit nervous. Also, the drum sound is a tad aggressive.

Ok, so I'm listening to "don't give up". That stick bass is maybe a bit like your guitar solos, except 1. there's only one, and 2. it is fairly repetitive, so it demands less attention than those guitar parts.

Folk rock...or...C.W. ...
don't know which. But what's important is the composition itself (solid and with excellent lyrics)and the vocal performances (you two sound just wonderful together). There is such a "natural" quality to this recording: nothing is forced and the accompanying instruments are kept in their place, allowing for just a bit of guitar to shine through at cadences. It is so nice to hear the work of disparate musicians who somehow find a way to blend their talents so beautifully. Thank you for this gift.

Very clean..
Great blending of the vocals. Reminds me of the hit that comes out from a broadway show. I would agree with some of the other comments about the guitars being a little busy at times.
To me the line " what was it broke the spell" seems a little awkward and may have a little more impact and sense of finality if it was just " what broke the spell".
Nice work.

Philip, this is just wonderful. There's a sadness...no I'd better say calmness in it...combined with Heidi's crystal clear vocals, that leaves the listener with a very warm feeling inside. This is one of the songs that reminds me of why I love music, thanks.
