Description
This is the fourth and final mix. Thanks to all who took the time to listen to the first rough. The following notes apply equally here:
Chris asked me to produce a five minute dance score with him. We recorded at the Airport Seven rehearsal studio on my Mac in GB'11. Only keys recorded direct - drums and guitars miked with a Samsom CO1U. Chris played percussion, keys, guitar and my modified two string bass (he dragged a guiatr string across it while muting and cutting with his other hand through a wah pedal and fuzz box). That's the clickety noise you hear early on. I played Air FX synth and guitar. We recorded for about three hours and I mixed for another three. In the performance there is a 25 second gap of silence - here I abbreviated it. Chris will sing live to this track accompanying the dancers. This is a first mix. Likely to be changes after Chris hears it. He's a great guy to work with. Google him - he has an eclectic resume.

Image is of Lava - Earth Moving Performance. The company we are working with.

Nice
I get the sense of more clarity in the mix for some reason the toms stand out more to me the breaks in the timing adds great effesct!

Good ears
I doubled the drums and eq's the second pass much deeper with a little overdrive so they would max out the volume but just below clipping.I also cut frequencies t of tracks so they would separate more. Dropping transient highs and lows that seemed to muddy up the mix. Chris has a great sense of time and dynamics. He left the mixing to me - weighing in as I submitted new versions.

Nothing like real drums
Chris hit the floor tom and snare (minus rattle) at the same time. He did two passes - hence the right left positioning. The bell tone is a stick holder on a stand.

I'd love to see
the whole performance.

The track is very evocative and images are already forming for me.

If it is recorded I hope you post the video!

Cheers

Bad Smells
Bad Smells would be proud of you Bud.
This is almost an exact replica of one of his original 2009 works.
A true masterpiece. I guess he touched your soul.
Good luck with the show.

I remember him
liked his work. Oddly - this is really mostly driven by Chris with my production and additions - and he never heard BS. But you are right about the connection. Before we started Chris played me a traditional Japanese composition.

Crisper,
no doubt due to your tweaking. I've heard Japanese productions that used this kind of drum beat but this has a lot more drone and clanking. Something sounds like steam kettle. The whole thing is hot. Can't wait to hear how it went.

Hmm
It must be the drums, but this one sounds more apocalyptic than the first mix. Though I have not gone back to compare its something a little grittier about it. Still very much enjoyed.

This
isn't you Martha Graham type dance score and was never intended to be. Swirling, off kilter and stimulating stuff.

Video
Wow, that drum after the silence was heavy! It sounded great on the video, it must have been heart shattering in the theater. The singing added an even deeper layer to the music. Great performance by the couple. The woman never touches the floor! All the pieces came together beautifully. Loved it man.

Edgy
Interesting mix of sounds in this uncertain kind of atmosphere. I was surprised to learn that you recorded it mainly live rather than from samples and I think the higher quality of the result and greater variance in the sounds is testament to this good decision.

Cool.
