It was always love
Beautiful opening. Warm and engaging vocal. Love it when the other instruments enter at around the 55 sec mark - the ears are given a treat by the way they interact. The harmonies fill things out, making your single vocal even more emotive. Beautiful solo around 1.55. Nice chord progression. Beautifully relaxed playing. Great to hear a new one from you, John!

Quality work John
I'm never disappointed with your songs.

Solid writing and performance. Loved the understated harmonies and extra instrumentation.

Just one other comment - at 2:57 there's what sounds like a beep. Was that meant to be there?

Cheers

Dick

I always look forward to a new JW song and this doesn't disappoint. Lovely warm vibe, fine instrumentation and top quality vocals/harmonies. What more can you ask for in a song. My kind of music. Thanks for the D/L, John. Kind regards. Peter.

I love it when someone takes simple ingredients and uses them in a sophisticated way to make something special; that's exactly what you've done here. Thanks for the download, this will be listened to many times.

Subtle
All the elements here deserve praise - song construction, guitar, voice and arrangement. A very mature sound that recalls Bruce Cockburn at times. Lovely.

IT
Thanks for listening, Stan. I'm playing a resonator guitar (National Steel). I wrote the tune in open G, but it was too high for my voice so I tuned down to F. Gives the guitar a nice warm bassy sound, although my intention was just to pitch it lower. I've heard it said that you evolve a style from dealing creatively with your limitations. That's what I'm doing here.

Smooth
Beautifully played and harmonized. Tuning that National down works. Adds a serendipitous smoothness that a brilliant tuning would have lacked. I'll tuck that trick away for someday.

A good, solid, honest song
'Strip away the bark and the true grain will appear.'

About sums it up.

Great writing, great singing, and some nice, clear, simple guitar playing... You left plenty of space in this, John, and it's what I think of as 'brave space'. Nothing in the arrangement covers up or makes up for a weakness elsewhere. Every bit is simply and beautifully carrying its own weight.

Really nice. Reminds me of the old days around this place.

Beautiful arrangement to a very laid back song, John. A pity you didn't publish the lyrics, but on the other hand that does force one to listen to the words as one listens to the tune. Nice harmonies.

I've been singing and playing since the age of fourteen when my brother Paul was working his way through the Beatle book and needed someone to play with. From Paul I learned to fingerpick, play barre chords, and to sing the melody while he sang harmo... [see more]
