The End (of the world)

Description
I've not been around much ... big corporation took over the studio I worked at for years and I got a slip of paper saying thanks a lot and see you later. I know this isn't anything new, it's happening everywhere. But it was a shock and I fell into a funk. I read about the doomsday challenge and it inspired me to make something musically so I put this together yesterday and did a mix this morning and thought "what the HELL" I'll post it. Yeah I know ... Neil young, but I'm a big fan and this was an opportunity to be influenced.

Lyrics
I saw Jesus in the parking lot
making a deal with the devil
for an ounce of pot

and Moses was sittin'
in the back of the van
with his 10 commandments
clutched firmly in his hands

I saw Mary drinking gin and 7 up
and Elvis was shakin'
he was all shook up

and Jimmy was holding a paper cup
singing star spangled banner
while beggin' for a buck

and I saw Janis
in a mercedes benz
she almost hit a preacher
yelling' the world's gonna end

we're all going to hell
if we don't make amends
and the devil is beside us
he's mans best friend

Oh I'm just another fallen angel
who's going to save me now

I went walking
to find the end of the world
I travelled for miles
not knowing where to turn

they say the world's gonna end
it's just a question of time
I'll keep on walking
got a mountain to climb

a bird is flying high in the sky
if I could fly I'd say my last goodbyes
and say sorry to the world for all its pain
and soar into the heavens
with my head in shame

and the light that shines
from the eternal skies
is just a hole in the clouds
where the sun can shine

we make our own heaven
we make our own hell
all we need is something to believe in
to feel better about ourselves

Oh I'm just another fallen angel
who's going to save me now

the end

Maybe I was influenced
having just watching Neil's "Journeys..." but:
after about 4 bars of your song - harmonica hadn't even come in yet - I
had to have it!
Sorry about the funk, but something fine has floated out of it!

Neil Young inspired indeed
He is not one of my favourite artists, but you are...this is ace you have outyounged him and that cannot be easy...sorry to hear about the job....one day the bastards in charge will realise that they need the little people more than we need them....nuff said.

This is fecking brilliant. Goddamn, what a righteous lyric! Neil-esque indeed, but you make this all yours, Stan. Killer chorus, and love the major key shift in the bridge/solo.
Just a fine piece of writing and performance.

Sorry about your layoff (been there, bro)...but you're turning lemons into oh so tasty lemonade here. Excellent track!

P.S, you gotta post these lyrics.

Stunning lyrics. I love the music - the guitars are great (beautiful solo from 3:29), the piano chords are very effective and the harp has some "howling at the moon" pain in it. Neil Young vibe, as you suggest, but done with your own stamp on it. Sorry to hear about the job - such things have a huge impact on how a person feels about things (and the bastards who run big corporations have no understanding of the value of people). Anyway, thanks for this wonderful song and all the best for the next step in the world of work!

You know how they say "don't give up your day job", Stan, well you are the exception that proves the rule. Fantastic Neil homage that takes most of his trademark sounds and just hits them right out of the park. Loving the harmonica, the piano, the classic vulnerable harmonies, the drums, the bass, the guitars... Guess, I like it :-) Thanks for the download and good luck with the next phase in your life. Don't let it get you down, it's only castles burning... Take care, Peter.

Wowzers!
Stan, this is FABulous. The only thing(s) that could make it better is for you to post the lyrics (for those of us who don't hear as well as we used to) and then to get a new job -- assuming you don't just take your ax and harp on the road ;-) This is excellent. I really am sorry to hear about the heartless bastroids who didn't recognize what they had in you, and hope you bounce back soon. Cheers.

Influenced yes, but those lyrics...
...are highly original. Quirky and intense. Sorry to hear about the job loss, don't give up on yourself, there's stacks of talent in there if you can turn this out. Very nice guitar on this track on top of everything else.

Sorry about the pink slip
But I gotta say Stan this packs a wallop like a sack of anvils. Heart comes through in every line, every strum. One helluva production all round here.
And to give us the gift of a download too shows just what a fine guy you are.

I hope you see some light on the horizon soon. The times aren't great but I think they're getting better little by little.

Take care,
Doug

Yeah - definitely Neil Young flavored, but I've always liked his style anyway, and you did a great job with this one. What really gets me is how fast your can turn these puppies out! Sorry to hear about the job - THAT sucks! But I enjoyed your tune - thanks for sharing!

Terrific lyric which the plaintive vocals bring out perfectly. Terrific sounding mix, the harmonica is a really nice flavor. You're beating Neil at his own game lol. Two thumbs up!
Sorry about the gig, hope you get another one soon if that's what you want. If this song is any indicator you're using your time well.

Welcome to the "Can't escape Neil Young" club
happens to me all the time. But it rarely happens this well. What a great track. So sorry for your turn of events. As a freelance worker with two careers I can't get fired - but the world is slowly giving me hints that my life is turning into a big pink slip. I'm with you brother.

Lyrics...
Wow. Pack a anvil!!!
The bass also packs an anvil and that's what drew me into this song from the very first measure. I wish the vocal was a little easier to understand without having to read the words, but that may just be my inability to decipher so many musical elements. ... I think this is an awfully fine number that is not only well-written, but beautifully played and exquisitely mixed as well. Such a pleasure to hear such a quality song.

The End...
... of one chapter and the beginning of another. I know, Stan... my own personal world had seemed to end at least a half-dozen times.
We endure, survive and move on to the next chapter of our life drama.

Your circumstances have inspired this unique musical work and derivative or not, it displays a fine bit of songwriting and musicianship.

Hang in there, Stan. This too, shall pass. ;)
