Description
A new track from my most recent album of songs - see forum post "new jiguma album". 16 tracks in all, total re-mixes with the best mastering I've been able to achieve so far. Have a listen at www.jiguma.bandcamp.com The versions there are much higher res mp3s than this one.

We had a European summer, part of which was spent in our friends, Brigitte and Marc's beautiful house in Franche Comté on the enchanting river Doubs in eastern France. We did lots of walks, most of which involved climbing up the sides of the very steep valley of the Doubs.

Baume les Dames is one of the larger towns nearby, and on one memorable walk we ended up on a rocky feature - "Fente de Babre" - way above the river and the town. Like many aspects of our short but treasured time there, it had an impact - but the strongest impact was made by the friendly greetings we received in the village.

This song is dedicated to Brigitte, Marc, Karine, Bertrand, Apolline, Laurentin (and their extended family) and, of course, Lilou, from Ougney-les-Champs.

Musically, it seems to be the opening of some floodgates which have been well and truly closed for me as far as songwriting goes lately. I really enjoyed writing, playing and producing this one - hopefully, that shows in the end result.

Lyrics
Baume les Dames
©2012 Neil Porter

Home was round the second bend
I was high up on a hill
There I was on the other side
Felt at home on the other side

Looking down on Baume les Dames
I was thinking of Odille
Felt at home on the other side
Leave me there on the other side

Run deep,
Run run river run
You don’t sleep
Run river run

Treading soft on holy ground
I had time to kill
You and me on the other side
Take me back to the other side

Wrapped around the ancient town
Running by the mill
Leave me there on the other side
You and me on the other side

Run deep,
Run river run
You don’t sleep
Run river run

SOLO - on verse

You met us as the best of friends
And I'm thinking of you still
Take me back to the other side
There I was on the other side

Run deep,
Run river run
I can’t sleep
Run river run
Run river run

You have mastered mastering. Very crisp and clear on each level. The song's architecture is a solid balance of lyrics and instrumentation.

Thanks Vic
The slide is my Tele with a swag of plugins. I just got an overdrive pedal for live stuff, so watch out!
It's nice to be back at MJ - I hope I can cope with the pace!
Have a great holiday and a briliant 2013.
Cheers from Oz,

So nicely recorded. The guitars are beautiful ... love the slide .Drums are nicely done .... they sit nicely in the mix. My only comment and it could be because of my phones. I felt the bass was a bit low and not punching enough. I've always loved minor tunes and this is a well written and performed song.
Cheers

A gorgeous-looking place
deserves a gorgeous-sounding tune. So nice to hear a new tune from you, especially one so pretty and so obviously inspired by good friends and good times. Everything about it sounds very pro and I wish you lots of success with your new album. Cheers, and happy Christmas.

Your heart really comes through in this music. And "Run River Run", sung honestly, takes on some manner of biblical gravity which attests to the truth about human existence

Great song, Neil...
You know, I miss the days when we were all more active, and I say that with the thought in mind that I could look forward to new Neil songs every week or two...

This is a really well constructed song, a very 'song-like' song, one that is more than just something that rhymes set to music. You get the sense, listening to it, that there's more there than you can put your finger on...

Cheers Ed
I bet I miss me posting regularly more than you do Ed!
The Pultec plugin is a part of my friend Chris' recently emerging studio about 10 minutes from here. We have a deal: I help him discover the hidden secrets of Logic, and he lets me play in his studio. A good deal in both directions I reckon! He's using the UA Apollo as his main interface, and from there it seems like rack-mounted rows of shiny new gear with knobs and meters and switches. I'm looking forward to spending more time there :)

This is a really well constructed, writted and mixed song, Neil, excellent work! Nice drums; I can easily imagine playing them exactly like this (which helps my appreciation for any song). Very cool guitar and organ playing too.

Wow
Such a nice work. The song is so congenial. The mood so pleasant.

And recording-quality-wise it sounds just impeccable, (listening through my new Sennheiser headphones).

C'est magnifique!
Alan has a good point - I like the vibe here Neil and it does really remind me a little of Dire Straits. Terrific song, professionally put together and produced (do you do any other kinds???) The photo reminds me of a picture I have overlooking the Danube in Austria, itself achieved after a steep but worthwhile climb.

Nice to hear your work again here, and I wish you great success with your new album.

Cheers from the Great White North,
Doug

Ahh...
... this sounds like the old jiguma from 4 years ago or so. There's something about this tune that brings me back to your "The Golden Days" and "Somewhere Deep" songs. But then again, it's that jiguma sound.

Definitely one of your bests, in every aspect. It's refreshing to hear your sounds again! Congrats on the new album :)
