God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen

Description
I have always admired the guitar playing of Paul (Noel) Stuckey of Peter, Paul & Mary fame. I can still remember the day I worked out how to play A' Soalin with the lead line on the top two strings and a bass line on the two bass strings. So this is a tribute to Paul, and a Christmas gift for the MacJams community (although I'm afraid I didn't do any of the guitar lines together - all individual tracks). It's a blend of the traditional tunes A Soul Cake and God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.

Merry Christmas to you all!

Has that strangely solemn mood to it.
Just like any good rendition of the hymn, but has something of it's own too. Nicely played, gentle guitar tune with some thought put in. Thanks for uploading it.

Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it. You mention that there was some solemn tone to it, and reflecting on that comment I think that may have come because the first the melody parts are played low - around an Em chord - to get good ring into the notes. Thanks for listening and for taking the time to comment - much appreciated!

Very Christmassy....
I do not know the Soul Cake song....though I am aware of the Soul Cake Duck !(Terry Pratchett)

Classic and classy job .

Hi Chris
The Soul Cake is I gather the inspiration for PP&M's song A' Soalin which was on one of their early albums - that's where I was introduced to it. Thanks for the positive comment - much appreciated!

Instant download!
Thank you Philip: this is wonderful, though too short given the beauty of it.
Hope you and yours have a marvelous Holiday (I still can't imagine Christmas in the summer) and I look forward to more of your gorgeous music in 2013.

Appreciate the Gift
Instant resonance hearing A'Soalin and reading your description of learning how to play it. I remember it being one of the first 'more complicated' tunes I heard and felt compelled to get somewhat of a handle on playing. Didn't too far with it, but now I can live vicariously and hear how I wanted it to sound. Beautiful job. dl will be enjoyed!

Thanks
Learning to play it was for me like patting your head and rubbing your stomach - the two parts seemed to go in opposite directions. I still often play it when I pick up an acoustic guitar. Thanks for the positive comment - much appreciated!
Loob said 1614 days ago (December 21st, 2012)
Love this Philip!
The only nit I have (on a personal level), is the tempo. I guess I have always percieved this piece as sombre, so I guess i feel a slower pace would lend to that more. Exceptional playing! Well recorded!

Hi Freddy
Just listened to the song and see what you mean. I took the tempo from the PP&M version of A' Soalin - although I just listened to that again and it may be a bit slower too. I've always thought of that song as a happy children's song. I guess that's the wonderful thing about music - not only are there so many songs, there are so many ways of playing each of them! Have a great Christmas, my friend!
davisamerica said 1614 days ago (December 21st, 2012)
i
actually love the tempo Phillip .... just reminds me of the energy of the season a bit. This is really a nice take and I will take a copy ...Thanks! Merry Christmas.

Thanks
I recorded a version a while ago using the Maton plugged in, but I could detect a sort of flutter somewhere that put me off, so I re-recorded it acoustically. Still some things could be done with the arrangement, but I'm happy with the playing. See you soon!
paul f. page said 1613 days ago (December 22nd, 2012)
Wonderful.
Not only is this a really pleasant Christmas mix; it is also beautifully played. Getting all those individual lines to sync up must have taken you...forever. But they work. I only wish the track were a little longer. Such a nice post, especially now. Maybe you will explore more ensemble guitar work like this in 2013. I'll bet you could come up with some great original things, too.

Thanks
The beauties of Garageband and multitrack recording, Paul - and looping a solo section (I think one part I played 9 takes before I did one I was prepared to share). I'll certainly be working on things for 2013, although I will be a bit busier on the work front at the start of next year and that may have an impact on the self-indulgent recording time!

Philip's Choir
Details -wow, lots to get right here, which you certainly do with aplomb! The effect of a guitar choir is lovely. There is a warmth to the tone, graceful solemnity with a touch of flair to keep it from getting downright serious. A perfect tune for a winter's night (or summer's night as the case may be).

Thanks for the gift Philip, and all the best for the season.

Doug
