A Bell in the Valley 2012 (w/ vox)

Description
Following all the excitement (and negativity ;-) of our recent Doomsday scare, I thought I might clear my personal palate by working on another Holiday piece. Not wanting a traditional carol I opted to rework A Bell in the Valley, SmokeyVW's lovely melody originally posted 5 years ago and remixed by many of us. I have already remixed this once but I'm doing it again because my earlier version had percussion in it and it wasn't much of a Holiday tune. Also, some of you seemed to like my post earlier this month of O Holy Night, done with a voice-over reading the lyrics. Since Smokey's piece has lyrics (which I ignored earlier) I thought I'd try it again so, here's a little gift for you Bill ;-)

A very happy Holiday to all you survivors of 12.21.12 and sincere best wishes for health and happiness in 2013.

Lyrics
A Bell In The Valley

There's a bell in the valley
It sings to the wind
There's a bell in the valley
Where do i begin

This time i will listen
But will i hear the song

This night as i'm sleeping
A long, long way from home
I'm a long, long way from home

There's a voice in the valley
It speaks to my mind
There's a voice in the valley
It speaks to mankind

But who here is lis'ning
And hearing what it says

This night as we're dreaming
A long, long way from home
We're a long, long way from home
We're a long, long way from home

Well we do all
seem to still be clinging grimly to this little blue and green coloured rock as it wobbles its eliptical way through the little corner of the solar sytem that has been assigned to it.......so it's nice to hear something like this, very positive and positively festive.....i must check out Bill's original ...seems to have bypassed me.....

thanks

Happy Holidays,Merry Christmas,Frohlische Weinachtfest or Whatever Else You Celebrate....

I like bells
Nice narrating and it reminds me a bit of the Polar Express story where the boy could hear the bell ring only after he believed. Thanks for the enjoyable listen.

I'm happy that you enjoyed it John
One of the drawbacks to having no grandchildren is missing out on some of the better children's movies (although I did catch some of that movie in my chiropractor's office one day: sounds like a cute idea).
They were Smokey's bells though I did change them from glockenspiel to tubular and raise the volume a little. Glad you liked my narration; thanks.

A Bell in the Valley
Vey atmospheric and cinematic - I could well have imagined Richard Manuel from the Band covering this. It's delightful in a sad way and I enjoyed every second.

My pleasure Bill, absolutely.
You may have noticed that I added a word to your lyrics and then didn't emphasize that word, which I should have. I also made a small change to your bell melody toward the end, but I made the same change last time around, just 'cause it felt right ;-)
Thanks for composing this and allowing me (and others) to play with it. A very merry Christmas to you too, Bill.

A Bell in the Valley
Reminds of the spoken stories that were part of Christmas in my youth (Bing Crosby's "The Small One" comes to mind). The bell is especially effective, but the whole piece is very emotive. Good one, Richard!

Small One
I sort of think of it similarly to Bing's "White Christmas" - they are a compulsory motif on the audio wallpaper of Christmas!

Calls out for...
a short video card of some sort. It is a lovely arrangement and have a yearning message that is full of hope and expectation and a certain sadness, too, that the bell might not be answered, that the invitation it brings might be ignored. Much to think about here. Glad you posted this beautiful arrangement.

Send me the bus fare
and I'd be happy to Vic, tho' I'm not sure I'd be there in time for Christmas. I drove through Tennessee once and quite enjoyed my stay in Knoxville.
Interesting that we both chose to have a run at Smokey's beautiful tune and post it on the same day. Thanks for the compliment.

Nice Personal Palate Cleaning
You're easing me into the spirit of the season. Haven't heard any of this song's precursors, but it says a lot that you're still tweaking away on this tune - which emerged a considerable while back. Back at you with wishes for a healthy and happy year!

I find it beneficial
to cleanse my musical palate every once in a while; all it takes is something opposite to whatever I've been playing or playing with. Actually, it's best if several somethings are involved, but it's still pretty simple.
Easing you into the spirit of the season is one of the main reasons I posted this. I don't think it would have helped anyone if the most recent posts here were of the doomsday kind ;-)
Thank you Greg.

Comforting
Your reading voice is perfect for this kind of piece Richard. And when you back it up with a fine arrangement it tugs the old heart strings. Also your rendition is the one where Smokey's lyrics really made their impact with me (I can be a slow listener).

Lovely work Richard. Merry Christmas!

Very nice.
I like how the reverb pushes the vocals into the back, giving them an almost vintage quality.
