Why Do I Remember? / With DWL & Davisamerica

Description
Dick Langford sent this song to me and asked if I’d be interested in singing it. I thought his vocals sounded pretty good, but I was more than happy to give it a shot. I’m still not sure if my track is any better than his, but I’m glad he let me have it. It’s a good song, and I’ve gotten some pretty good comments at the local coffee shops. Dick (DWL) has supplied all the guitars here, and Jack (Davisamerica) gave us some sweet harp playing. I really got into their music here, and had no problem finding the right page. We skipped the drums for now, but may add some for a revised post. This was written by Dick Langford and Richard Marris. I think there’s some excellent songwriting here. It came from across the Atlantic, but it sounds like it came from across the Red River. I tried to sing it like I had mud on my boots. Hope you enjoy.

Guitars: Dick Langford
Harmonica: Jack Hemby
Vocals: Terry Pearson

Lyrics
Why Do I remember? © 2008 Langford/Marris

Why do I remember what I'd like to just forget?

The note I'm leaving says it all
When you get home I'll be gone
It says - No more fights, no more lonely nights
Waiting for a beer soaked spouse to call

Chorus

Memories they brightly shine
Sweet beers, a kiss like wine
I'd said I'd stay forever and a day
But this is where I have to draw the line

We used to laugh a lot before
Another beer, pick each other off the floor
You were the bar room star
Now I see you from afar
I don't find you funny any more

Chorus

It was time to change the song
And we knew you couldn't be that strong
Who am I to say you're wrong
For you a sober day
Was just too long

You wanted children that was clear
I got a job and I cut back on the beer
There's no change in you
I know what I've got to do
I can't see there's any future here

Chorus

I can still hear the English roots, but you take it a long way from the UK Terry.
Excellent vocal and nicely played backing and harmonies. The refrain is very tasty indeed.

Hey Terry
you and Jack lifted this song so much. I loved the vocals and how easy it was to work with you.

Richard Marris and I wrote the song when we had a period of trying to write some country style songs.

Terry, you really made this song your own and Jack added his sprinkling of fairy dust.

Many, many thanks from me and Richard :-)

I'd been twiddling my thumbs for a while when Dick sent this to me. I had a little time, but not enough to do my own project. It was quite a treat for me, and I really enjoyed working on it. Dick made it easy for me. He even sent several tracks in different keys so I could pick out the one I thought was right for me. G worked just fine. Glad you liked it.

Excellent work gents. I like the bridge - the song briefly hops across the Atlantic from El Paso to Brighton and then whizzes back again. It works.

From UK to Texas
And you make it work well, Terry. I like everything about this song- the lyrics, vocals, guitars, harp, and the Texas treatment over an English origin. I don't think it needs any drums; the bass is perfect, but if you add them, it will still be a perfect song.

Like most of us, there was a time when I thought country wasn't cool. A whole new world opened up when I finally wised up. Yeah, I like what Dick did on that bridge too. And Jack's harp really ties it all together. I'm thankful to get to work with such a talented crew.

With talent like this...
There are all kinds of talent when it comes to music: Dick is the best in telling a great story and writing a memorable tune; Jack adds some great back-up. But there's another talent, too...that of choosing the right voice to pitch the song. YOU were that perfect choice. What a great (and looping) little C/W song. I can't imagine a Brit pulling this off, so my hat is off to DWL for handing it over to you. (Ha!) Really enjoyed this. A wonderful collaboration of talents all around to create a memorable performance.

I enjoy doing covers, but none more than the originals I find here at MacJams. This is where you find real music. It's getting a little difficult to spend as much time on MacJams as I'd like, but I'm sure appreciative when you guys throw me a bone now and then. It's nice to be a part of good music.
