Description
It's a first! Mr Marris sings on one of his songs. He also has his 13 year old son Daniel playing drums (I'm beginning to feel irrelevant)

In the summer Richard and his family toured the East coast of America. In a motel somewhere along the way he met a guy in a laundry room who was going to Slab City (more on that HERE )

Richard played guitar and sang, Daniel played drums. I played some guitar and bass and pretended to do clever and important things with plug-ins.

Slab City ©2012 R. Marris

The ink on his arm says there's a story to tell
While I'm waiting for his laundry he might as well
Tell me where he's going and where he's been
Tell me why he's running and what he's seen

His girlfriend was a model but she left him alone
Tries to show me a picture but it's gone from his phone
Had to quit his job because it was bad for his health
Bought himself an RV with the last of his wealth

And I think of you upstairs in our motel room
Waiting for me in the dirty lightbulb gloom
Whenever we differ whatever you do
The only thing between him and me is you

He's going to west to Slab city when the summer heat cools
Off the grid in the desert where there are no rules
Brass bullets by the bucket from the rifle range
Sell them for a hundred fifty dollars and change

And here we are on this greasy edge of town
Look up my angel don't get down
Hold on tight together, forever true
The only thing between me and Slab City is you.

Oh yes...
you're the great pretender, and another fine job you've done Dick. Interesting to learn about Slab City, but then I always seem to learn something from the two of you (cf. Queen Caroline, for example). Also, you're a good friend to post this for him (and Daniel). Cheers.

never mind the bullocks...
Nice punky feel to this...love the thick slabs (yeah) of guitar. Beefier than a Findus lasagne...and less horsing around! Groovy

Now we're rocking! How do punks feel about clever plugins? Great track! Takes me back to a time when rock was real!

The only plug-ins that punks worry about shouldn't be mentioned on a family site ;-)

Real rock? Yeah, sounds good to me.

Punchy, garage band sound, Dick. Your vocals work a treat and Daniel does a fine job on the drums. Enjoyed. Thanks, Peter.

Slab City
This is a great song, it takes me back to about 1977 - at first I was thinking it's a kind of Ian Dury song but then the vocals made me think of Wreckless Eric - do you remember him Dick...he was also on the Stiff label two of his most memorable tracks were 'Reconnez Cherie' and 'Waxworks' - well anyway I love those records and this is what 'Slab City' reminds me of. Most enjoyable.

1977 again?
Funny as we weren't consciously trying for it!

I believe Wreckless Eric lives in Saltdean (about 10 miles along the coast to me). I only really remember "Whole Wide World" so I'll have to check out the songs you mentioned.

Thanks for the listen, comment and a bit of education John!

Richard will be pleased!
He's been working on his vocals and I think the practice has paid off.

He's also very particular about his lyrics so he'll be doubly pleased.

East meets West
All I could think of was Eddie out in California. You seem to be making a habit of traipsing around the U.S., even if you do it virtually and/or in others' shoes. ... What a great rock 'n' roll number you guys have here. Loads of talent all around and the tune just kicks it from the get-go. Great post and congratulations to all.

Slab City
Cool song Dick, and some great musicianship to boot. I never heard of Slab City before, even though it is only a couple hours east of me. Checking out their website reveals an interesting history behind it, but hey - it's something different to sing about, eh? thanks for posting - enjoyed!

Your new band? It all sounds pretty good together. In places (for instance right at the beginning) the drum feels like it's a millisecond behind the beat. Could be an artifact of compression, but I would have tried moving it forward by a notch.

It may well be a out very slightly but I suspect that was probably me and Richard! This was a try out with Richard's son and I was truly amazed how he kept the whole thing together.

He's still learning and hopefully the next song we do with him will show how good he's becoming.

Thanks for the detailed listen and comment.

Reminds me of Squeeze, mainly as the lyrics have their great storytelling quality. Great little rock tune, driven by a wonderful narrative.

If I was a snowbird
Ha-ha .. sooner or later we all achieve irrelevancy : )

Nicer rocker. Good first line .. followed by a gritty storyline. Love the energy coming off those drums!

If I had an RV .. I'd head to Slab City, just as soon as the snow started falling.
