Description
I have a love/hate relationship with the Beach Boys. Any song about cars is white noise to me. I don't know anything about cars and I wasn't that 16-year-old talking about 440's or whatever. I'm not actually proud of that, either. I'd much prefer to know about cars so I could maintain my own without having to depend on a mechanic. But I digress. Songs about car races, car specs, what have you... I always thought they were silly. I feel the same way about surf songs. So when I hear a song like Shut Down I shake my head because I have no idea what he's talking about. So I always thought it would be funny to do a song like that with the car I have and what I know about that car. Unfortunately, the only thing I know about cars is what my mechanic tells me is wrong with mine. Thusly, everything mentioned in this song is absolutely true where my old Saturn L200 is concerned. I sold it a little over a year a go. Kelly Blue Book said it was worth $60. No joke. But I got $400 for it.

This song was started the first few days in February for the RPM Challenge. The goal was to go back and sharpen up the harmony vocals and add more guitar fills, but... well... time and all that. Also, for some reason I sang "Shooting for the stars then you'll probably catch my L200" when I was supposed to sing "Shooting for the stars then you're probably gonna catch my Saturn". I think the latter makes more sense, but I didn't have time to change it so there you go.

Lyrics
Shooting for the stars then
You'll probably catch my L200

She's got that Twin Cam engine
Keeps the Betty's all begging for rides
Blue tape on the window because
The regulator's broken inside
When you get her on the street
She's gonna catch a lot of heat
Because the AC's busted
In my Little Blue L200

She's got a rack and pinion problem
So the front end starts to shake
When you get her over 65 on the freeway
Set the cruise control at 60
'Cause it costs too much to fix it
And you're getting flipped off
In your Little Blue L200

When she hit 200 thousand miles
Man, that's almost from here to the moon
But the timing belt broke apart
Later that afternoon

Shooting for the stars then
You'll probably catch my L200

car songs
I get it. I'm glad they exist for those that enjoy them. The sound of those songs is fantastic, of course. Shut Down itself is a great example of that. Cool song, but total mystery in the lyrics. "Pedal's to the floor hear the dual quads drink/And now the 413's lead is startin to shrink" WTF???

Also, a Saturn 2001 L200 with 238k miles in poor condition isn't even valued on the Kelly Blue Book site. In "Fair" condition it's worth $60. But I told the dealership I was just going to sell it to a scrap yard for $400 and they matched the offer. And to make this already too long reply even longer... my original plan was to keep it, leave it in my garage and take it apart in an effort to learn more about cars. But engine hoists, stands, jacks, and other tools would have run me close to $1000 so I couldn't justify the expense :(

This is fun. Good Beachboys sound in the melody, guitars and vocal style - then Chuck Berry joins the party for the solo! Much enjoyed!

Got the groove
Definitely got the right groove going on this one and have done great justice to the genre. ZoomZoom!
I really appreciate what your doing here. You definitely have some classic car show gigs in your future. Maybe you should check-in to the annual Woodward Dream cruise in the Detroit area.

Hey, I'm a beach boy!
This style of song is always a guaranteed feel good experience when it's well done. Well, I feel more than good now! This was a delight and I'm always amazed by guys like you on this site who can make a track that sounds like there are perhaps as many as 8 distinctive musicians/singers on it like this....great job!

Good time vibe and fun lyrics. Evokes a period of time and an innocence that is, sadly, long gone. Nice harmonies and lead break. Lots to enjoy. Thanks, Peter.

love the chuck berry solo!
a fun beach boys homage. nice vox.
nonsensical lines and not-overpolished quality only add to the appeal so the time constraints worked in your favour in my opinion!

Shooting for the stars?
Don't get car songs and surf songs? Are you one of those people that wears sneakers on the beach?

Best part of this tune is the solo. It kills. And I love the 'probably catch my L200' outtro. It's a great spoof of the genre and like all your songs the unabashed, un-ironic honesty is really attractive. Like that after school special that you watch because it's the only thing on and cable hasn't been invented and then you realize that you like it, you really do.

Mellow and cool, retro without being kitsch and solo to die for. Great stuff, I particulatly enjoy the Wilson-esque vox inthe fade out

I do like this music, but more than that, I appreciate the humor in this song. Singing proudly about a beat up old car. I like that!

Memories........
Great BB sound reproduction. Well balanced and tight instrumentation. Loved the guitar solo! Very clean production and harmony that rivals the original Beach Boys. Congrats on getting top dollar for your Saturn. Brad

You're like a freaking legend
I've heard an old Beatles' bootleg that is almost exactly like this. But, I know you didn't rip it off lol

Spiritual Regeneration- That was the name of the Beatle bootleg, btw.

Little blue
What a great tune! Not coming from the US, I never understood all the acronyms and part numbers in beach boys songs either. I just assumed they knew what they meant! This really captures that feel, but with a hefty dose of reality behind it. Love those harmonies and that solo is great Beach Boys copying Chuck Berry style, nailed down. Excellent stuff.

Sounds like a love relationship
Fantastic job. Really digging the delivery on this. Very funny... I'll pass you on the freeway as soon as I install a shot of NOS. Don't listen to too much surfer music either even though I own a couple of long boards and try them out every summer.
