Description
This is one of the tracks from my 2013 RPM Challenge CD -Holy Qaug Dab Peg, Haley

This year's RPM was a bit different and somewhat more difficult for me.

All of the main recordings were done with Haley in her front room using a zoom H2N. I interviewed Haley about how epilepsy affects her on a daily basis and she had some interesting stories and perspectives to share.

Other parts of the CD contain elements of music that were produced mainly by Haley playing some drone-like notes on her violin and me occasionally banging on the upright piano in her front room.

All of this was then thrown into soundforge and logic audio and pushed, pulled and manipulated till it sounded right

The whole cd is available on request if anyone is interested

Listened to as a whole, the album is certainly not filled with toe tappers.

Instead what awaits you as listener is dense almost claustrophobic listening experience that sounds like it should have come off a david lynch soundtrack

Violin - Haley Tilden Ritter
Electric Piano - Bryn

Final cut up bricolage mix - bryn

Atmospheric and intense, Bryn. It was very interesting to hear Hayley's unexpected perspective on her disease. Thanks, Peter.

interesting/informative. one thing that i always get out of your compositions is like i'm hearing one page of a book...meaning very focused on the subject at hand

this project was challenging for me on many levels...but i think you are right, i am much better at writing short stories than novels (although haley is the true author here)

You're right
Intense and claustrophobic.

Not easy listening but important.

Cheers

not easy listening and not easy making this...perhaps the latter affected the former?

i agree - dream-like in a way, or would that more accurately be described as nightmarish?

Dose
of reality that a lot of us will never experience. This IS intense and it's interesting to hear the effects straight from a victim. Well done.

a victim is probably the last thing that haley regards herself as, but she faces the challenges has with a tremendous resourcefulness...quite an amazing woman really

interestingly she seems to be more terrified of a cure than she is of the epilepsy itself

this project was plagued with doubt for me, mainly because i didnt have the time to devote to it that it deserved...partly due to external factors and partly because of the limitations that RPM challenge imposes by default...i wasn't sure i had taken the right approach in regards to working with the H2 recordings and basically building everything around them, but in retrospect, i am glad that i did...it took me into an area of creativity and sound that i dont normally go to

Qaug?
I meant to ask you the other day how this is pronounced. Damnit, man, you'll never get this on the Peak if you make the title unintelligible.

I hope you've had some separation from this project and have been able to discover it as a listener. The music and the narrative are both carefully interwoven, not one overpowering the other. Even in instances where the music gets stressed, it's part of her story. I think that's why struck me most about this record. It never felt like you were trying to make YOUR record. More of a careful documentarian.

Your RPM production was consistently unique and intense. Great that you took this approach to someone's truth.
