Description
My daughter woke up one night while she was having a nightmare. The dream ended in what she felt was actually happening in her room. A cry in the night was heard which woke the wife and I up. Since she struggles to roam the house by herself. I decided to write a song about her room. If only the walls could talk... Now that would freak her out.

Lyrics
There's a girl that I adore
This old room was filled with joy
Well I know this will end she'll come back again
And I know she'll breath life within me
So I wait weeks will pass and time will tell
That one day she'll understand.

There's a room filled full of dreams
Rays of sunlight cast upon it's wings.

I don't know what changed her mind
There is nothing to be frightened of
Here I hold all those joyful memories
Still I wait hoping she'll come back to sleep
In a bed that I hold so dear
And one day she'll understand

Well I know this will end she'll come back again
And I know she'll breath life within me
So I wait weeks will pass and time will tell
That one day she'll understand.

I like the drums in this ... cool acoustic electric sound, what FX are you using? sounds great. Excellent electric guitar, crunchy and big ... well done! and a good mix. This rocks!

I was looking for a hard guitar to break with, started out with a couple of Metal presets in Logic. They ended up sound a bit too distorted, on the third mix I opted to find and tweak some Rock presets. Looking back now... I tweaked the "Brown Tone Metal" setting for the lead and "Shag Haircut" for the rhythm.

Lead
Pedalboard
Wah set to retro mode/Vintage Drive set to fat/Grinder set to scoop
I'll use my Stealth pedal with the Wah and set it too latch while recording and then read while mixing.
Amp
Brown Stack keeping the gain down a tad

Rhythm
Pedalboard
Vintage Drive set to fat/Retro Chorus synced and rate @ 2 o'clock
Amp
Small Brownface amp with a Vintage British 4X12 keeping the gain down a tad

The intro is a reverse of the two electrics sustaining.

There I go again TMI... back to what sounds more to me like tube amplification on a brink of breaking. I always set stereo imaging on all the tracks and like to keep compression around 8.

Since my room has a fish tank, it's too noisy to mic so I run direct in with my acoustic and tweak Logic's acoustic presets. I played rhythm with the acoustic during the chorus capo'd on the 5th fret.

Thank you for listening and your interest means a lot.

Hi John
Thanks for the insight regarding your approach to getting your awesome sounds ... now you've got me excited and I will have to experiment more ... smart going with the brown tone ... it worked real good tone wise. And I have to compliment you on your acoustic sound. I could tell it was a direct sound but real nice.
Cheers

Cool song with some nice dynamic changes. Has a real 70's rock feel to it for me - reminds me a bit of early Def Leppard with the guitar tones and chord progression you use here. Great sounding solo! Good job, man - enjoyed this!

Stunning guitars - lots of power and drive. I like the position of the vocal in the mix. The way the guitars take on the theme is exceptional - for example, the wailing solos around the 2 and 3 minute marks. Impressive work, John.

Killer opening, John. Fine mix of tones. Liking the bass/drums sound, too. Real solid but warm. Must have been interesting to write lyrics about something so close to home. Well done. The soaring wah lead work is fantastic. Very fine song. Thanks, Peter.

Lovely guitars
and beautiful production on a killer song John. Would like to have your great vocal mixed a little higher - you've always underrated yourself vocally, but I think your voice here (and on most of your tracks) is a real weapon for you. I've been listening to Robin Trower and Jack Bruce today, and the wah really reminds me of Trower's playing. I'm also interested in what fx you are using there. Sounds fantastic! Great track!!
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Wow... what a comparison and thanks for the encouragement. I really need a second ear to listen to my comps before posting. The level on the vocals was really throwing me off. Maybe I can send the next one to you. I'll copy the presets in logic that I posted for Stan.

Well, I almost hesitate to say it...
but the guitars really are fabulous on this John, not that anyone else noticed ;-) An interesting inspiration, especially for a rock song: most of us would probably sing a lullaby in response to a daughter's nightmare. I hope she's feeling better. Cheers.

I think the guitars rule this one, John...
I like the lead guitar very much, and the interplay of the lead electric with what sounds like an arpeggiated acoustic...

The melody's really solid, too...

On my headphones I would actually vote for a a somewhat bigger drum sound...I like WHAT the drums are playing, and the basic sounds/samples sound tight...I'd opt for a little more presence and sizzle in the cymbals, and maybe some delay and spacious reverb ...

This has certainly got a hint of that 'Enter Sandman' lyrical vibe going on...
FEEL said 1495 days ago (April 22nd, 2013)

Thanks for the review. I'm glad you liked it and I appreciate your comments on the drums. Here I was thinking that maybe my drum mixes in general were a bit too loud. My daughter was playing one of my other songs yesterday on her boom box and the drums did sound a little upfront on that player. It may be that particular song and I recall Neil had mentioned something in that order on a previous post. I like the comparison as well.
