Woop woo woo
Huh?
Huh.

You'll do as you are told
Don't break the mold
We believe in.
You'll do as you please
If noone sees
Your feelings

And anyway...
You'll be a strong boy, yup
An' anyway…
They'll be a first time on your own.

Your sick, tired an' old
Your heart is far too cold
To Iive with.
You did as you pleased
An' noone saw
Your crying.

And anyway...
You'll be a strong boy, right?
An' anyway…
They'll be a first time.. anyways.

Anyway
Anyway
Anyway

You'll do-as-you-are-told!
Don't break the mold
We've believed in.
You'll do as you please
If noone sees
Your feelings

An' anyway...
You'll be a strong boy, right?
An' anyway…
You'll be a right one..
An' anyway…
You'll be a first time..
An' anyway…
You'll be a strong boy
Anyway.

Thanks Stan!
-- I may just do some vocals/lyric corrections, soften some cymbal hits and then have a go mastering it .. but I don't want to lose the rawness either :)

What a Rocker
I'm digging the chord selection at the start. Nice vocal melody and I really like the chorus part. Drums really drive this tune. Anyway.... thoroughly enjoyed.

It's very Jimmy Eat World- my go at 'American College' style.. and for the drums and crunchy guitars they were admittedly, a large influence. I just need my house to be filled with scantily clad folks now ;)

You've been away too long! So good to hear something new from you. It's the music that matters. Not the mastering. This is a great rocker. Love those power chords. Catchy melody.

work (as I expected at the end of last year) + drumming for some friends has really limited my window of opportunity this year. It was high time I posted something... this is played capo 1st fret on the Gibson- took some time to get song key that suited both my range and still letting me play the chorus (on the guitar) the way I wanted to play it.

The lyrics are kinda a fake one-sided conversation from a major label manager/executive to his upcoming young star.. and then to when their upcoming star is an aging rocker- but it also makes me think of parenting too for some reason .. lol.

It's a zippy 163 BPM this: for both the bass and guitars I had to use some sections from the first time the appear later in the song, as all that downstroke 'chugga chugga' stuff proves pretty tiring on ze handies and I had started to drift on my timing :)

too kind.. my list is growing (having listened now on some different speakers): some clipping, some cymbal softening- but mostly vocal fixes. "ia" says I ooze fat, not energy (thanks for that "ia"(!) lol.

A fantastic rocker, Alan. The guitars, bass and drums just drive the song so well but it is the vocal work in relation to the layering, harmony and placement that really grabbed my attention. It worked out a treat. Sounding pretty good now, don't twiddle too much. Thanks, Peter.

The vocal stereo field placement was probably mostly a result of this 'drums up" approach.. I had to put them somewhere they didn't clash with anything else. I am hoping that some mastering sw might help keep the separation but blend a little more.

'Tis very simple: most time was on the instruments sound & of course drum fills for thrills- I should spend more time on vocals...but I seldom can be Rsd.

I must say I am fond of the 'intro, verse x 2, chorus, verse, chorus, break/intro, verse, chorus x 2' song structure... always sounds well rounded to me and easily palatable. Lyrics- too kind: these I feel do need 'some' work (as part of my general "vocals" rush) :), as some parts are just ad libs to get the melody ideas down.

Excellent!
Good to see you back at MJ. love the 2 second interlude at 1:56 - very classy.
It's especially impressive that you can get so much energy happening on your own - many people can't get half that dynamic with a band.
Cool post.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

My energetic downfall will come, I fear, when I end up falling out with myself over 'musical differences' ;) Glad you liked the break idea- I need to work on my "strict voice" delivery some though at that point.. came out a little more subtle than I intended.

Tweak not
Man those harmonies and that doubled vocal are ace. Solid riffage and drums. I wouldn't do anything to this, it has such energy and dynamics.
It grieves me that I can't hear tunes like this on domestic radio - I'd buy this on a 45 man.
Tweak this and I wil hunt you down ... :-)

if I threaten to tweak it, I might ...get ...more ...downloads of this version.. shh .. ;) and it grieves me this isn't on radio too .. if that's any consolation. If I do tweak it, I will keep the entire old version/file that produced this, exactly as it is... best I can do. :)

Raggedy Edges?
This cooks just fine right now. If I heard this music slamming out of some shady, dangerous club with questionable types in questionable dealings for questionable gain, I'd roll right in the door, oblivious of the questionable glances.

I love how it sounds rough, but actually isn't - really. The guitars have the solid punch that makes the windows shake, but are crisp and focused and alive as electricity. Ditto the drums - great breadth and sly grins all around.

Personal fav moment - "you'll be a stro-o-ong boy-YUP!" The little flip you put into the 'boy-yup' is perfect! I can see the whole audience shouting out that along with you... YUP!

Great, great tune, man!
apb said 1566 days ago (May 7th, 2013)
Thanks Rik!
Yup, I've missed your style of commenting :) "rough" is such broad term- I guess.. it's fairly 'tight' I think.. but the sounds for the bass and guitars add that "punk/pop" kinda roughness. It's some production details that make it a "rough cut" for me: odd clipping, odd vocal mistake... and leaving that in, does of course make for more "live" feel.

i like rawness of the recording itself. gives it that more 'live' and honest feel. that and the energy. if i were in a local pub and bored, this is the song that would liven everybody up...and get the beers flowing again. heh

well, yeah.. there is some clipping in spots, vocal fluffs, over keen cymbals, lyrical mistakes and some other production issues eg. running it through some mastering sw for a start ... so it's really not as polished as I am quite comfortable with... but time was not on my side. Glad you enjoyed this rougher version all the same- I do like this versions rawness... it has some charm.

Radio ready
Fabulous energy! Plus, you could sell t-shirts! One idea, if you are still tweaking: the cymbals... I would center them a bit, cuz l-r stereo cymbals sound too midi. Also, change up the syncopated cymbal hits at the end of almost every phrase, just to make the drummer more live? But that could be just me. But the whole punk pop thing is great!

Merchandising, merchandising.. ;) Yup the cymbals are definitely something I've considered tweaking slightly.. darn GB midi kits often have those L/R default panning on cymbals + the general variance in cymbal velocities is a bit too much for my 'happy-go-lucky' tastes. Good point, well presented :D
