Description
Most of the back story to this song is in Andrew’s comments below, so I won’t add to them. I will just say thank you to those who worked on the song – Andrew for providing the chords and acoustic guitar tracks; Chris for bass, percussion, synths, arrangement, production, mix, & master; Kelly for that tasteful trumpet that helps to create the feel of the tune and Paul for his impeccable touch on the piano. It’s been great to be part of this – I love the collaborative opportunities that the MacJams community provides. I hope you enjoy listening!

Comments from Chris

I really enjoyed working on this from start to finish with such polished musicians. Andrew and Philip provided such a beautiful track to work with and the classy contributions from Paul and Kelly only made it better. Thank you guys for trusting me with this; privileged.

Comments from Andrew

More orphan changes. After Philip took my open collaboration “Orphan Changes” and turned it into “Fading in the Dark,” I looked around my hard drive for other ideas to pass on to him. I wrote these progressions a few years ago but couldn’t come up with a melody or lyrics. I passed it along to a couple different MacJammers. But it didn’t go anywhere. My dear departed friend Jerry Quinn toyed with it for a while as well. But nothing ever came of it.

So I gave it to Philip who came back a few days later with this wonderful melody and lyrics. So now we had a song. But what to do with it? I had often wondered what it would be like to hand a producer full control of a project. So I suggested we invite Chris in to produce and give him free reign.

Chris accepted our invitation and dove right into his role. I simply passed him the GB file with Philip’s vocal and two of my acoustic guitar tracks. We let him know he should do with them whatever he thought best. Early on he shared a version with his incredible bass and tasty percussion added. He told us he was waiting for tracks from other collaborators but wouldn’t tell us who they were.

Not long after that he sent us a mix with all the sound effects added and contributions from both Paul and Kelly. I was blown away. Both men are amazing musicians and it’s a real privilege to make music with them.

Thank you Philip for turning another set of my orphan changes into a song to be proud of. Thank you Chris for bringing the song to life in a truly amazing arrangement and professional sounding recording.

Lyrics
Close to Midnight
by Philip Gardner & Andrew lack

It’s getting close to midnight,
And my mind it will not sleep,
It’s running over everything,
The fears that go so deep,
What will I say tomorrow,
That will help to hide the doubt,
What can I do tonight,
That will drive the demons out,

I know there is a better way,
To live this life of mine,
I know there is a better song,
There is a better rhyme,
But all this trepidation,
All of this unease,
Comes back to the one,
Who I am trying to appease,

Walking down deserted streets,
The lights seem very dim,
They don’t light the way I’m going,
And they won’t show where I’ve been,
And nothing seems to comfort me,
Neither God nor man,
I know I can’t go on like this,
I need to make a plan,
Can’t I just get free of you,
And live a life that’s real,
Maybe then these scars of love,
Will finally start to heal,

I look towards the future,
I can see the things I want,
And now I have to take the steps,
That get me to that point,
Sometimes it seems so easy,
And what must be done is clear,
And things that can be far from me,
Are starting to get near,

It’s getting close to midnight,
And my mind it will not sleep,
It’s running over everything,
The fears that go so deep,
And when tomorrow tells me,
That there’s no more time for doubt,
I will do what must be done to,
Drive the demons out,
Sometimes it seems so easy,
And what must be done is clear,
And things that can be far from me,
Are starting to get near,

There were rumblings that MacJams had one step in the grave... This song is proof positive that it is alive and kicking and can't be let slip. The class of this collaboration is impossible to ignore. Great vibe, great production, depth of feeling, meaningful lyrics, great arrangement. Take a deep bow, gentlemen. Thanks for the D/L. Take care, Peter.

A pleasure...
...to be involved with these classy guys, and an honor to be invited in the first place. I am glad everyone is enjoying this song as much (or even more) as I did when I first heard it. Chris really brought this all together, but we all needed Andrew's harmonic vision and Philip's excellent song in the first place, so the rest fell into place quite easily. It always amazes me that a collab like this can take place at all given the physical distances involved.

Hi Paul
Your piano playing is just beautiful in this. I love the way it drifts in and out of the spaces in the song and, along with Kelly's trumpet, builds that jazzy, relaxed feel that pervades the song. Distance between the players? I guess once you're not in the same room it doesn't matter how far away you are - the wonders of modern technology! Thanks for what you've done on this track, Paul - I love it!

Guys, you have created a masterful work here. Andrew, your guitars are warm and full and rich - they fill up the soundscape so well. Both Kelley and Paul filled in the spaces with some super tasty trumpet and piano. Chris has really come into his own as a producer - very impressive work! And Philip, your vocal performance is smooth and laid back and absoutely perfect for this tune. A very well done collaborative effort that I have no doubt you are ALL very proud of. I know I would be. Congratulations!

"It was one of those nights..
when the day never ends, and my shoes had walked out on me, again" ;) Has that Mickey Spillane "Mike Hammer" kinda thing going on.. I thought someone might talk to camera even- just lacks 'a dame' in a red dress. Fine playing everyone- only minor nit was the trumpet recording? sounded a little "distant" compared to the rest, who all sounded as if you were in the same joint ;)

Yes, that's the feel it has alright! And I understand what you're saying about the trumpet - it was a decision to push it back in the mix rather than be an upfront solo sort of thing, and was the subject of a fair bit of discussion. The joys of mixing - so many decision to make! Thanks for listening and for the comments - much appreciated!

Interesting back story
Great song. Love the cool chords and smooth acoustic. I hear a little Sadé in the way this works. Trumpet is really nicely played and fits in perfectly. Bass is so right, as is the subtle percussion. Piano and vocals are excellent. Only nit could be that it's maybe a verse too long, but, not an issue really (its just me).
All in all, a really good post with classy production.
Cheers all!

Hi Neil
I appreciate all the comments, Neil. Thanks for the that! Re the length, I understand what you mean (the song is longer than something I'd usually do) but I think in this instance it was as much about setting and developing a mood, and the different elements that went into that take a bit more time to establish. Personally, I keep interested because of the different parts (the trumpet and the piano and the sound effects) that populate the tune. Thanks for stopping by - I hope all is well up north! Cheers. All I can say is wow ... truly one of the best I've heard on MJ.
Everyone should be proud of a collaboration like this. Philip, your voice shines in this, so warm and inviting and Andrew's crystal clear guitar with those major 7th chords and Paul's piano along with a tasty bit of trumpet ... smoooooth. And last but not least, I have to give a big thumbs up to Chris not just for his bass but for the amazing warm mix and creative approach to arranging this piece.

Been said
but I'll say it again --- CLASS. Yessir. I never noticed before but yes! you do sound like Clapton. I was about to say that it was quite the coup to get Mr. Page on this, but hell, it's a coup to get ANY of these guys. Master class. Chris did a fantastic production job on this, and I always thought Andrew's original had potential (I guess you did, too). Congratulations, Philip, on putting this collab together.

Fantastic
This is so good it makes me embarrassed to post my amateurish, raw, self serving stuff. Special kudo's to Philip for the vocal and lyrics but it would never have been without Andrew's original inspiration. And everyone else is rock solid. The trumpet is the touch that puts it way over the top. The piano notes tinkle in just the right spots and the bass and percussion are as professional as I ever heard on any record.

Great job! You make me feel humbled before you.

Phillip this is a wonderful opening so much soul you are bringing forth. This is so very well produces and Chris is really showing his stuff on this play Y'all. The clarity of the instruments blows me away. Exceptional musical performance that truly defies words. I will say this. This is the best piece I have heard here at MJ since I have been around.
