Description
I know that it was about time for me to post one of the 8 songs I've written. But, my apologies: My GB is possessed. I had what I thought was a nice harmony track. All the sliders and dials move by themselves and the pitch slider changed my track to a fog horny -12. The panning is all over the place because those changed even as I was saving. Anyway, I wrote this without knowing why. I liked it. This was the best I could do, under the circumstances. Thank you for listening.

Lyrics
The Sea

My father was a sailing man
And he sang his songs of the sea
I always thought he'd settle down
But, I found how wrong I could be
>
Ma raised me to be good and pure;
Waited all her life, patiently
Saw him thrice in the twenty years
He sailed away from Ma and me
>
Soon, she grew sick, without no cure
Broken as broke ever could be
Alone was I, once she was gone
I wandered about, miserably
>
The fisher folk thought I was daft
As I climbed the rocks to the lee
All I knew was the lonely walk;
The biting embrace of the sea
>
Memories of my Da were dim
Ma's sad passing..in front of me
Though my Da loved his sailing ships
He'd no love left for Ma and me
>
There's naught left but to drown meself
From heartbreak, I long to be free
My tears joined with the cold, dark murk
As the ground fell away from me
>
The water rushed and brought me down
I heard Da's songs of the sea
Dying before our time, we did
And hating our lover, the sea
And hating our lover, the sea

Aren't you nice?
As I said, I have no idea why I wrote that. It sounded like something from the 19th century and I used a bit of that language. The loops weren't old sounding but I was just trying to find something I could fit the melody to. I'm so very flattered and I am grateful. Thanks.

Great lyrics
Reminds me a little of The Decemberists in their use of "historic"language and themes.

The melody has a bit of "House of the Rising Sun" about it but it's different enough to work.

Good choice of loops as well.

Do you have a USB midi controller keyboard attached to the computer? Some M-Audio keyboards cause the problem you describe. Try disconnecting it if you have one and see if it makes a difference. Have you raised the issue in the main forum?

Cheers

Dick

I caught
The House of the Rising Sun thievery after I posted it. No wonder it sounded good to me. Caught me. :). I would've loved some Celtic sounding background but that's beyond me.
So, I just tried for the 90 bpm.
No, I'm just using a USB mic. I need a witch doctor, I think. Thank you.

Excellent poetry Char
and I love the backing percussion and music and I do wish you could have got the mix as you intended, because it would be perfect...... your voice sounds fantastic, so you really don't need to move or even use those sliders. Nevertheless you got the song across just fine.
Drums and bass can always be central on the track along with the voice and anything else you use, guitars or whatever can then be panned maybe even just one notch, either side, regards M

I really hadn't touched anything, much.
This possession has been around since, almost, day one. I had my vocal centered. I put the drums to the left and the acoustic loops to the right. And the wheels just moved around by themselves. The volume slid back and forth. After saving and discarding a couple takes I finally saved one where the settings stayed fast, though not exactly where I had wanted them.
I had a harmony track and it was already alto but, like an idiot a clicked on pitch and it shot to -12 and wouldn't re-set. So, I gave up on that one and deleted the the track. If GB has a diagnostic entitled Exorcise this beast, I'd use it. Thank you very much, Maurice.

Aw, gee whiz.
How lovely of you to say that. "Borrowing" unintentionally from a great melody, I suppose I deserved the poltergeist activity. :) Thank you, Bob.

Reminds me of Signe Toly Anderson (which shows how old I am!). Nice mix of somewhat electronic beats with interesting articulation - lots of syncopation.

I'm listening on my iPad, so not getting the full sound, but what stands out to me is the clarity of your voice and your good pitching in this key.

I believe I only sang it that first time. The second vocal for harmony had to be trashed. Thank you for telling me. I've no idea what key I used. It wasn't hard at all. You are very sweet, Neil. Many thanks.

Strong lyrics...
and strong vocal. This has the feel of one of those old traditional ballads. At first as I listened I wasn't sure about this song. I think the mix initially mixed me up... Then I stepped back and listened as to a demo. Yeah... all the necessary elements for a really good song (which this is) are there. The mix needs some work (as do most of mine). And it would be worth the effort 'cause this song has some deep roots.

Char, your vocal has a haunting, even arresting quality. Just wanted to let you know that I really like you singing.

Hi, Jack,
All my stuff is but a demo. I cop out when I sing alone. Sometimes, I try to make music. I hardly ever succeed. I am unable to smooth this out. Just don't know how. Thank you very much for approving the vocal. That means very much to me. Thank you.

I like this kind of traditional ballad, and you've really done the form justice here. Lovely melody and well crafted, dark lyrics. I especially like the line, "My tears joined with the cold, dark murk."

Turns
out I am a thief, concerning the melody. I enjoy writing, very much. I think, for me there are parallels to this story in my own life. Else, I have no idea why I wrote the poem. That may be why I was believable in singing it. Thank you for approving my older fashioned language. I have watched some movies about the late 1800's. A favorite was "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir". So charming.

Wow!
It is so nice to see you here. Most everything is going to pot around here. GB is effed up and now I can't send files through my email or anything else I tried. I've got a very patient MacJammer in England waiting. You win some and lose some. So glad you liked this. If I knew music and if GB cooperated, it could be better. A Celtic sound would suit these lyrics, for sure. Thanks, Charlie.

I don't know
how to explain why I wrote that. It just came and with the language. I wondered if I should use the double negative: "without no", but left it. I did add "s" to year as I didn't think that made much difference and it was easier to sing with the "s". Thank you, Chris.

Hi, Mitchell.
You do? That's nice. I was hoping a got a bodhran sound with the clunky drum. Oh yeah, sad, for sure. Sometimes, life is unbearable. A lot of tales of melodramatic suicides have made their impact on my experience. I have hope. They didn't. Thank you.

Hello, Karen.
You are very kind. I appreciate your support... more than you know. Writing comes easily. I must get three to four ideas a day. I didn't write them down, before. Now, I do. My GB hates me... ever since it went bonkers, a bit after I first got it. It probably thinks, "For God's sake woman, learn music before you attempt to make it! I'll not be a party to your abominations, without a fight!" I like this and I'm glad you find some merit in it, too. Thank you so much.

Very solid Char!
I'm rather reminded of the tropical-themed albums Yma Sumac (she of the 10 octave range) recorded in the 50s and early 60s, which are still appreciated today by a large "cult" following--they were unique. Your voice is has such penetrating clarity on this and with your vibrato used, I would liken it very much to the oboe; it really sounds great against the rhythmic (I loved those) backdrop. And of course, as always, your lyrics are exceptionally well done (one of your fortes Char). I enjoyed my visit here--thanks so much for sharing it! Michael

Oh, my, Michael,
I'm sure these lyrics would sound good against a Celtic background. I liked this clunky beat, too. I couldn't ignore it. It was, in a way, mean, like the life of an abandoned family might lead. Thank you for liking my lyrics. That is usually very easy though I don't know why I wrote these particular ones. I guess the why doesn't matter. I'm glad you came. You are very dear. Thank you very much.
