I Speak Of Love

Mozart's "Marriage of Figaro" is a delightful opera that still works today largely because of its inimitable music. About 40 years ago I found the text for one of that opera's arias ("Non so piu cosa son...") and set it as a choral piece because I liked the words. I had not (at the time) heard Mozart's original music. Lorenzo da Ponte … who would later emigrate to New York and teach at Columbia University (then known as King's College, founded in 1754) — wrote the libretto which Mozart used for his telling of the story of Figaro. ... Cut to several months ago when I revisited da Ponte's words, this time electing to cast them more as a contemporary art song for a solo singer and piano. That is largely what you will here when you listen to this recording, gussied up a bit with some backing strings and woodwinds. This is not standard MJ vocal fair, so be forewarned. But I do hope that you will be brave enough (and open enough) to listen for three minutes. You may be surprised by what you hear. There is an exuberance in this text that is palpable and I tried to capture that... And if you are at all interested, my piano-vocal score can be found at my website here: http://www.paulpage.org/Miscellaneous_Songs.html

I speak of love.
No longer do I know who I am,
Or what I am,
Or what I'm doing.

Now, I'm feverish; now I'm chilled.
When you look at me, I tremble with emotion.
The very words "love" and "delight"
Excite me
And make my heart race with joy.

I'm forced to speak of love
By a desire I can't explain.
I speak of love when I dream.
I speak of love when I'm awake.
I speak of love to the water...
Love to the shadows...
To the mountains...
To the flowers...
To the grass...
To the fountains...
To the echo...
The air...
I speak of love
To the winds which waft away with them
The sand of my fruitless words.
I speak of love.
And if no one hears my heart,
I will speak of love
To myself.

Beautiful music, Paul. I like the warm orchestration and of course your usual delightful touch on the piano. Heartfelt vocal that captures the spirit of the music. Another gem from you!

No player!
Tried a few times to listen but there is no player attached. At least not through my iPad....I'll try the computer later on. Surely any Mozart music is Public Domain!

Very different from you Paul
It's interesting that it sounds like a song from a contemporary musical yet came from an "old musical".

Very nicely done Paul, beautifully arranged and performed.

I Speak Of Love
It is always a treat when you provide us with a vocal work, Paul. I agree with Dick, this could easily be from a contemporary musical. No need to be forewarned. Elegant and enchanting are words that come to mind. Thanks, Peter.

I Speak of Love
Beautiful. While it's not the musical style that I generally listen to, I can really appreciate your musical sensibilities. Vocals were heartfelt and full, you did a fine job.

This is
exquisitely performed Paul..... both the playing of and the very emotional vocalising and who would have thought this was written by Mozart and not by a more recent composer ...... excellent as always Paul, cheers M

I half-hearted tried
to say to myself that this is not my kind of music, but like you forewarned, I was surprised and you convinced me, again, that this too is great. Some vocals in there..! Ahh...
