Description
This is exactly what the title says. It's a traditional (more or less) military march. The kind I played over and over and over again in high school and college band. And I played a bunch of them. Normally, marches aren't the most exciting piece of music for a French horn player, but I still love them. Especially the traditional Sousa-type marches.

Since I've played so many, hopefully, I didn't completely rip off any one or several of them, but I tried to put together something that was a tribute to the traditional march.

I've been working on this for a few months and it's not quite where I wish it was, but I decided I wanted to go ahead with it simply because I was tired of tinkering with it.

Hopefully, you guys will enjoy, especially those who spent any time in marching band.

So - just to be sure
you are playing the french horn here right? It's not listed in the Hardware. Great track and very exhilarating. Nothing like a good march with a cuppa joe. Much enjoyed.

The MacJams March
A treat to hear a marching band song at MJ, Joe, especially one dedicated to the site. A great wake up call over this part of the world. I was air conducting from the sidelines :-) Thanks, Peter.

You simply cannot
avoid tapping a foot and perhaps even marching in place to this... Great exercise!!! Whew!!! Should be the MJ theme song I say!

Nicely done!

Nice one Joe
Sounds like the real deal on my iPad - lots of pencilling I imagine.
Marching bands never really took off here, well, not to the degree they exist over there. Closest I ever get to brass bands these days is in Biergärten in Bayern :)
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Marching Band
I was a Baritone Player. We usually got melodies to play with the trumpets or trombones, our band had a very strong brass section :) Sounds original to me. Good solid march beat! I might try to do one Hmmmm.... Very inspiring!

Fun!
Enjoyable!! Had me marching around the breakfast table! You did a great job making the tone colors authentic, and the arrangement is spot on. Love it!

Love a good march. I was in Marching Band- and thats all I'll say about that. Love the symphonic band quality to this. Eventhough it has definite marching band qualities it is something that a symphonic band would play in a concert hall as well. I really like your passion in this. This reminded me that you helped Feter, Roxylee and I on this tune. This really showcases your sensibility in this area and I was amazed then as I am now. thanks for the music Joe:

Ha!
Funny you should mention that tune because it was actually the genesis for this one. It planted the seed in my mind about doing a march and some of the percussion patterns I used, like the roll off, were modified from ones I made for that tune.

Thanks for bringing that back up. I loved working on it. And thanks always for taking the time to listen. Glad you enjoyed!

March composers unite
Nice job Joe. And here I thought I was the only one on this site to compose march music (see Dad's March 1 to 5 if you're interested).

As many commenters have said, who can avoid tapping toes to an uplifting piece like this. Countermelodies, piccolos, snares... the whole works. I can certainly appreciate the time it takes to put this together. Only nit is that the recording cuts off the release trails at the end of the march - easy enough to fix with another second of track length to let us hear the band's echoes die away.

Well done sir. Now, by the left... quick... march!
Doug
